I'm working with a grad student who is interested in studying communication practices/norms as barriers to inclusion in virtual communities. While this topic abutts my own interests, it is not my area of expertise. I've already turned him toward Nancy Baym's _Tune In, Log On_ and Lynn Cherny's _Conversation and Community_, as well as some more foundational work in socio-linguistics, speech communities and ethnography of speaking (e.g. Hymes, Gumperz, Philipsen). I'd appreciate any suggestions of relevant work that might inform his research. Scholarship from a critical/rhetorical perspective is particularly desirable. One example is that of libraries and the way they organize the output of the knowledge industry. I would like to thank all those who made IR12 a terrific conference and experience. In particular I want to thank Karine Nahon, her colleagues, staff and students in the University of Washington Communication Department, particularly Beth Patin and Lassana Magassa, and the UW volunteers generally. I would also like to thank Lori Kendall, reviewers and presenters for putting together an excellent program, and for continuing the tradition of trying to do things differently at AoIR events. In that light I particularly want to thank Ignite talk participants and all those who use AoIR as a chance to try to do something different, something you can't do at traditional disciplinary conferences. Such things take time and effort, of course (and in many cases bravery) and they may not “count” in ways that traditional disciplinary activities, such as giving a paper, do, but they are part of what makes AoIR truly valuable, because they inspire creativity, innovation and new ideas. AoIR conferences continue to be intellectually stimulating and also supportive, warm, anti-elitist and fun, so allow me to also thank everyone who has been a conference attendee, everyone who has been a member, everyone who has served AoIR in some capacity, or who has otherwise supported the glorious mix of people and ideas that makes AoIR so special. This is the only conference I leave with such a sense of sadness that it’s over, and such a sense of anticipation for the next one. With gratitude, Steve

In addition, Mobilities contributes to study of the technological, social and cultural developments in transportation, border control, mobile communication, “intelligent” infrastructure, surveillance. While mobility is an important framework to understand contemporary society, the pervasiveness of location-aware technology has made it possible to locate ourselves and be networked within patterns of mobility. As user generated maps and location-aware mobile devices become commonplace, we experience a shift in the way we connect to the internet and move through space. Networked interactions permeate our world. We no longer enter the internet--we carry it with us. We experience it while moving through physical spaces. Mobile phones, GPS receivers, and RFID tags are only a few examples of location-aware mobile technologies that mediate our interaction with networked spaces and influence how we move in these spaces. Increasingly, our physical location determines the types of information with which we interact, the way we move through physical spaces, and the people and things we find around us. These new kinds of networked interactions manifest in everyday social practices that are supported by the use of mobile and location-aware technologies, such as participation in location-based mobile games and social networks, use of location-based services, development of mobile annotation projects, and social mapping, just to name a few. The engagement with these practices has important implications for identity construction, our sense of privacy, our notions of place and space, civic and political participation, policy making, as well as cultural production and consumption in everyday life. Hi Karin, I've used ScreenFlow software to record interviews conducted over skype (http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/) from my mac. Using an external microphone is essential for decent sound quality. The software generally performs flawlessly but I have had an error message or two that required a reboot. This is obviously not ideal if it happens mid interview. CSCW Workshop:The Future of Collaborative Software Development February 12, 2012 Full Details: http://research.microsoft.com/futurecsd Call for Participation This workshop brings together researchers who are interested in the evolution of software development organizations and the role of collaboration technology, such as crowdsourcing, social media, software hosting, and application marketplace services. This CSCW 2012 workshop will include brief presentations, moderated discussions, a poster session, and a forecasting exercise to inspire participants to come up with their next big research idea. The major themes of the workshop are 1. How can empirical research methods be adapted to study and evaluate radically decentralized software organizations, where communication occurs on public social media channels and no centralized software repositories are used? 2. What are the organizational aspects of decentralized software teams, and how do they differ from more traditional enterprise or open source teams (for example, participants’ roles, work practices, and performance incentives)? How do these teams form, establish processes, operate, and reflect on their work? 3. How do the organizational, functional, technical, and social aspects of decentralized software teams vary over the course of their projects and overall collaboration? 4. How do software development practices co-evolve with collaboration technologies? 5. Why are particular application domains (for example, socially-relevant projects, health, gaming, energy efficiency, citizen science, education) attracting the focus of decentralized software teams, and how do the teams’ development methodologies and tools enable them to successfully meet their goals?
