Googling vs password protection is a weak distinction. Not all public sites are crawlable by Google. And many password "protected" sites require no validation, verification, or even confirmation to restrict access, and are therefore "accessible to all" who invest 12 seconds to "register" a password. Sent from my Verizon Wireless Phone ----- Reply message ----- From: "Burcu Bakioglu" <bbakiogl(a)gmail.com> To: "jeremy hunsinger" <jhuns(a)vt.edu> Cc: "C Sosnowy" <c_sosnowy(a)yahoo.com>, "air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org" <air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org> Subject: [Air-L] blogs and confidentiality Date: Sat, Nov 26, 2011 1:20 pm The rule of thumb is this: if you can access the same information just by Googling, you don't need IRB or any consent. If forum threads are accessible by all, it is free game. If the information is on password protected sites than you *must* get permission (and IRB). If online discussions are on a closed site, they require permission etc... The fact that they are using usernames and their identities are protected only means is irrelevant. This only means that IRB will give you an exempt permission, that is, they won't have to review the process every other month or so. You would get your permission from the IRB regardless and they will be off your back till the finish time comes. At least that is my understanding and I conducted 3 field works for my dissertation. This is what the IRB told me. Best. Blogs & Confidentiality
by Sanaz Raji 28 Nov '11

Hi: I agree with the points that Terri Senft made on this thread. For my project I follow the same policy that Senft outlined before I commenced my fieldwork; one consent form for interviews and another for gaining permission to quote sections from a blog and/or YouTube post. I also allow my participants to review what I have written about their work so that they can comment on sections that need further clarification. This should be standard practice for all online research. No researcher wants to repeat the incident that happened to the Iranian bloggers who participated in Nasrin Alavi's book, "We Are Iran". Nasrin Alavi failed to implement clear consent to those involved in the project. It appears that she had a sketchy way of collecting consent it seems. After the blog was published outside of Iran, Iranian bloggers began to hear through various means about how their blog posts were constructed and discoursed without their full consent in the book. Understandably it made many of them very angry. Some felt used and deceived by Alavi as this blogger Sabir comments: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/74051863 Many of these bloggers do not have access to the full book and some, like the case of Sabir, had to rely on migrating to a country in the West in order to preview the book. What really irks me is that Alavi is making money and connections on the backs of these bloggers, and now has the acquired the status as the expert on Iranian bloggers. Meanwhile, Iranian bloggers who participated in this book still have a very limited means to refute what Alavi wrote about regarding their blogs. Likewise, it makes the job as a researcher harder, especially now among Iranian and Iranian diasporic bloggers who can be understandably wary of participating in projects similar to Alavi's for fear of being misquoted and/or misrepresented altogether. There is also a huge element of trust and once that is broken, it is hard to regain. This is why gaining consent in a correct manner is so important. regarding mobile devices and cancer: M4D and IARC

Regarding research on possible carcinogenic effects of mobile phone use on humans, and ethical issues as a result - The results of the IARC working group are published in July 2011's edition of "Lancet Oncology" - it looks like they view the evidence (of mobile phone usage being carinogenic) as being inconclusive, and limited evidence being available: ".the Working Group reached the overall conclusion that these results provided only weak mechanistic evidence relevant to RF-EMF-induced cancer in humans.". I'm supervising a similar project where the researcher is analyzing newspaper articles on a topic, and interviewing journalists on the process of reporting on that topic. We are referring to specific, identified news stories. The interviews will not be directly quoted, and interviewees will be anonymous, but our IRB advised us to warn the journalists that people who knew them well or followed the topic closely would be able to identify them. I think it is unlikely because of how the interviews will be written up, but I agree that they should be warned. Sometimes you can, but you shouldn't. How to archive websites?
by Szulc Lukasz 26 Nov '11

26 Nov '11

Hi all, For my PhD project I want to analyse Polish and Turkish websites for sexual and gender minorities. The problem I'm facing right now is how to archive the whole websites? Is it possible? If yes, could you recommend me any good (and preferably free) software to do so? I also can save a web page (not the whole website) using my browser but then not all elements are saved (e.g. banners). The same is also true for creating PDF files using software like PDF creator (working as a printer). One of the option is to have a screenshots of home page and other pages I want to analyse. Do you think it will be enough? The disadvantage of this method is that if after a year I realize I want to look at some other sub-pages it won't be possible any longer. I'd be very grateful for your help, Best, Lukasz Lukasz Szulc PhD Candidate University of Antwerp Department of Communication Studies www.ua.ac.be/lukasz.szulc
