Inclusion of short links in academic publications?

Thank you all for your comments! The reason I asked is not because of a word limit but because one of my committee members suggested I'd use short links to ease access for readers of the print dissertation. I do have quite a lot of electronic sources as footnotes in some of the chapters and he mentioned he'd have typed a shortened url but not a long one. An alternative would be to include short urls in the footnotes and add an appendix with corresponding long links. I'm not sure it's worth the hassle though. LIVING BOOKS ABOUT LIFE http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org The pioneering open access humanities publishing initiative, Open Humanities Press (OHP) (http://openhumanitiespress.org) is pleased to announce the release of 21 open access books in its series Living Books About Life (http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org) Funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), and edited by Gary Hall, Joanna Zylinska and Clare Birchall, Living Books About Life is a series of curated, open access books about life -- with life understood both philosophically and biologically -- which provide a bridge between the humanities and the sciences. Produced by a globally-distributed network of writers and editors, the books in the series repackage existing open access science research by clustering it around selected topics whose unifying theme is life: e.g., air, agriculture, bioethics, cosmetic surgery, electronic waste, energy, neurology and pharmacology. Peter Suber, Open Access Project Director, Public Knowledge, said: ‘This book series would not be possible without open access. On the author side, it takes splendid advantage of the freedom to reuse and repurpose open-access research articles. On the other side, it passes on that freedom to readers. In between, the editors made intelligent selections and wrote original introductions, enhancing each article by placing it in the new context of an ambitious, integrated understanding of life, drawing equally from the sciences and humanities’. By creating twenty one ‘living books about life’ in just seven months, the series represents an exciting new model for publishing, in a sustainable, low-cost, low-tech manner, many more such books in the future. These books can be freely shared with other academic and non-academic institutions and individuals. Nicholas Mirzoeff, Professor of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, commented: ‘This remarkable series transforms the humble Reader into a living form, while breaking down the conceptual barrier between the humanities and the sciences in a time when scholars and activists of all kinds have taken the understanding of life to be central. Brilliant in its simplicity and concept, this series is a leap towards an exciting new future’. One of the most important aspects of the Living Books About Life series is the impact it has had on the attitudes of the researchers taking part, changing their views on open access and raising awareness of issues around publishers’ licensing and copyright agreements. Many have become open access advocates themselves, keen to disseminate this model among their own scholarly and student communities. As Professor Erica Fudge of the University of Strathclyde and co-editor of the living book on Veterinary Science, put it, ‘I am now evangelical about making work publicly available, and am really encouraging colleagues to put things out there’. These ‘books about life’ are themselves ‘living’, in the sense they are open to ongoing collaborative processes of writing, editing, updating, remixing and commenting by readers. As well as repackaging open access science research -- together with interactive maps and audio-visual material -- into a series of books, Living Books About Life is thus involved in rethinking ‘the book’ itself as a living, collaborative endeavour in the age of open science, open education, open data, and e-book readers such as Kindle and the iPad. The Christopher Newell Prize recognises and commemorates the ground-breaking work that the late Revd Canon Dr Christopher Newell AM undertook within the telecommunications industry from 1990 to 2008 in representing the needs of people with disability. Thanks to sponsorship by Telstra, $15,000 (AUD) will again be made available in prizes awarded for the best, original papers offered for publication by TJA that demonstrate the tangible benefits that an innovative use of telecommunications technology can deliver in assisting individuals with disabilities. We invite you to attend a iConference workshop "Cultivating Reflective Practices in Computer-Mediated Distributed Teamwork", Feb 7th, 2012, Toronto Reflective Practice is an important part of professional work. Although there have been numerous studies about the design to support distributed teamwork, we have very limited knowledge about how to foster reflective practices in their activities. This workshop aims at seeding such a research endeavor through a research discussion about the pressing need for cultivating reflective practices in computer-mediated distributed teamwork. Specifically, we solicit position papers about one or more of the following research themes and the related research questions: 1.Understanding reflective practices in distributed teamwork. Example of related research questions: In what circumstance is reflection enhanced or increased? When is it discouraged? 2. Critical factors of the reflective practices in distributed teamwork Example of related research questions: How are an individual’s reflective practices impacted by the team context? How does an individual’s reflective practice affect his or her group’s practices? 3. Methodology for identifying and evaluating reflective practices in distributed teamwork Example of related research questions: How do researchers evaluate the reflective practices? Call for Participation in iConference 2012 Online Dating Workshop on February 7

Online dating sites are a unique laboratory for understanding human relationship initiation, development and self-identified success. To date, online dating research has been scattered across disciplines. An integrated, interdisciplinary view of how this most basic human activity occurs through technology is now required. The iConference is an ideal venue for initiating this discourse, since the community itself is interdisciplinary. This workshop is targeted for the online dating curious researcher; those who are interested in beginning research in the area or who may have ongoing research that may connect to online dating. We have established a preliminary framework of areas that deserve further research based on a review of existing literature and current work that we will be presenting at the iConference. ICT4D (Information and Communication Technologies for Development), emerging markets, new forms of mobility, and the internationalization of organizations dominate contemporary conversations about information and communication technology. Whether in academia or industry, all agree that technology design and research today must consider the role these globalizing processes play in the way people collaborate, interact and exchange ideas across national and cultural boundaries. The focus of this special issue is on the relations between transnational processes and technology practice, design and research. We are especially interested in characterizing the theoretical, methodological, and empirical challenges of our work in transnational settings in a way that will be useful for future research and design in this area. For example, what analytical and methodological frames from within the HCI tradition offer new approaches to this empirical context, and which of our existing frames require reconsideration? How does "Transnational HCI" engage with or challenge ICT4D or Reflexive HCI? Thinking interdisciplinarily, what can the broader HCI community learn by drawing on work in other disciplines, such as information studies, anthropology, media and cultural studies, communications, science and technology studies? How can HCI contribute a novel perspective on transnationalism and technology to those disciplines as well? One problem is that the student has to be from the EU i.e. eligible to pay home rather than overseas fees at a UK university, which unfortunately excludes students based in Turkey.
