Dedoose (Qual & Mixed Methods Web Research App) Updates

Hello everyone, it's been quite a while since we posted about Dedoose, and wanted to let everyone know about some of the major updates over the past few months. For those not aware of Dedoose, Dedoose is a web-based application for qualitative and mixed methods researchers designed by Drs. Thomas Wiesner and Eli Lieber of UCLA's Center for Culture and Health after years of frustration with NVivo, MaxQDA, and other software. You can find out more on our site over at http://www.dedoose.com. Here are some of the major new features over the past few months: - Full code import, export, and code merging. Continuing our tradition of easy-in easy-out, you can now export and import codes, along with merging codes together merging the code applications at the same time. We now have full exporting of all Data in your project. If for some reason Dedoose does not fit your needs, your free to take your data elsewhere. We stand by the fact that we believe we are the best at what we do, and it's our responsibility to our users to keep being the best. We promise never to lock in users like many of our competitors do. - Training Center for inter-rater reliability testing both for code application and code weighting. We are using Cohen's Kappa and Pearson's Correlation for tests respectively. This works great for an individual researchers testing their accuracy over time, or for groups of researching to verify consistency of application and/or weighting. - Chat system: Now chat in real-time with any member of your project using Dedoose. - The Advanced Project Importer: Got an excel spreadsheet with a ton of quantitative and qualitative data and want to create a Dedoose project? Using our advanced importer Dedoose with automatically create all the descriptor fields, descriptors, documents, excerpts, codes, and link everything together at once completing what we call the indexing phase of your study. Simply add more codes and apply them to the excerpts and then begin your analysis. - Insane performance increases: Over the course of the past few months users have been pushing Dedoose well beyond what we initially believed where "normal" studies, especially with quantitative researchers trying Dedoose. We enjoy a good challenge as at the end of the day it only makes us greater. Our engineering team has stepped up to the challenge in a big way optimizing so many different pieces of Dedoose. We are seeing large projects load over 10x faster, over 30x reduction in memory usage, and the ability to store 20x more data per project. In one example one of our projects is holding over 750,000 individual descriptor field values, and is loading smoothly. - Complex filtering: We implemented the ability to select multiple filters across categories allowing the very intuitive and easy creation of complex and/or Boolean logic filters. This makes it very easy for example to find all excerpts with 3 particular codes with specific weights that also happen to be linked to a particular descriptor field option ( for example females). - Full .doc support: In addition to rtf, txt, docx, we have added support for the older Microsoft office format .doc, including embedded images. We also have found great tools to automatically batch convert from pdf's to docs, allowing full use of PDF's as well. - Payment and Pricing changes: We have simplified our pricing, turned on month-by-month pay as you go, as well as added additional discounts for paying for 6, or 12 month terms. In addition we are fully willing to beat any competitors price in any situation. After a month you are prompted to pay, but are allowed to hide the dialog for a while after that. Hi All, I'm just curious. How many people actually read e-books in the DRMed format that publishers provide through a browser interface? I'm at Stanford this year, which has lots of titles in electronic form. But many of them are unreadable past a couple pages. A .pdf that could be displayed on an e-reader device would be fine, but I can't see sifting through a web portal that lets me do a whole lot less than what I could do with a physical text. If I really want to read the book, I get the physical copy or see if there's a .pdf floating around. Best, --J

Fifteen years after the publication of Bill Readings’ seminal book The University in Ruins and in the wake of the UK government’s new austerity budget, Nick Couldry and Angela McRobbie proclaim the death of the English university. In Italy students demonstrating against the Bologna Process protect themselves from police with giant books. On the heels of severe budget cuts and increasing privatization in the California state system, protesting students occupy university buildings, while in British Columbia and Quebec hundreds of students gather for rallies against spiraling student debt and increasing corporate influence on campus. Everywhere university systems are being eviscerated by neoliberal logics asserting themselves even in the face of economic recession. After decades of chronic under-funding and restructuring, public universities have ceded the university’s public role in a democracy and embraced “academic capitalism” as a “moral” obligation. With tuition fees and student debt on the rise, academic labour is tiered, cheapened and divided against itself; two-thirds of classes in U.S. colleges and universities are taught by faculty employed on insecure, non tenure-track contracts. The casualization of academic labour and a plea for sustainable academic livelihoods were at the core of the longest strike in English Canadian university history. This workshop will happen on march 23th, 7pm at Fabelier's Lab, at the Center of Interdisciplinary Research, Paris, France. (http://fabelier.org/where) The idea is to catch the stream of all tweets (~ 100 millions daily) and process them to extract the hashtag #zeitgeist, ie the most popular hashtags of the moment. Dear all Can anyone help me with this please? I'm looking for stories about people who have become well-known due to their involvement with the internet and who are NOT NORTH AMERICAN! I'm finding it incredibly difficult, and I don't know whether it's because I'm looking in the wrong places or whether the US and Canada really do dominate big name cyberculture. I'm looking for people outside North America who have become famous or successful in net-related R&D or business or government or law, or be influential thought-leaders, authors and critics, or are notorious for net exploitation or crime, or are fictional or gaming cyberspace characters, or online religious leaders etc etc. I have a few in mind already, of course, but my list is very short. So, who is your country's Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or Tim O'Reilly? Your Howard Rheingold or Stewart Brand or Kevin Kelly? Your Steven Johnson or Henry Jenkins? (You will have noticed btw that these are also all white men, with the possible exception of Jobs, who is half-Syrian). Who are your internet criminals and what did they do? Do you know of any well-known stories or urban legends about the net which may or may not be true? Does your country use the internet in a very culturally-specific way? Apart from individuals themselves, I'm also interested in culture-specific stories such as haunted mobile phones in Malaysia or Chinese RPGs based on the Monkey tales. There is considerable emphasis on the technical novelty of these spaces, placing secondary the human nature of such virtual domains. Thereby, the Information Technologies and Social Networks temporary working group of the ECREA defines its objective as being a forum to share and shape research on technologies and networks through an interdisciplinary, historical and comparative perspective. This section brings together the relatively nascent fields of social informatics, new media studies, and human geographies with the classic disciplines of anthropology, sociology, economics, psychology and political science. The emphasis is on empirical to theoretical work on social collectivity, connectivity, and creativity through and with technologically-mediated spaces. This group will primarily promote the European perspective and research on these issues in response to the current dominance of North American scholarship in this vital area. The intersection of information technology and social networks has gained considerable attention from the recent political uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East, highlighting the role of Twitter and Facebook in these struggles. Historically, patterns of innovations and application have emerged time and again, approached often through a utopian or dystopian lens. Now, euphoric visions of these online social networks have been argued as key tools in precipitating positive social effects of democratization and egalitarianism in society. Naysayers propagate an opposite perspective of these tools as having decimated age-old relationships and ties that are fundamental to stronger social ties. This section aims to move beyond these dichotomies and focuses on research within Europe that delves deeply into its complex socio-cultural and political dimensions and its rootedness historically and spatially. Special attention will be paid to the offline and online ties and the fluidities and constructions of relationships as they influence one another. Timely topics in Europe such as migration, citizenship, online activism, populism, virtualization of museums, distance education and more will be encouraged as they relate to social networks through a range of information technology tools and spaces. Specifically, we aim to do the following through this section: 1. To provide a forum for researchers to share and partner on research concerning information technologies and social networks 2. To develop a rich corpus of literature that is particularly European centric 3. To build an online and offline collaboration amongst practitioners and researchers through encouraging theory studies that can be significant for policy and practice 4. To eventually develop as an ECREA section of excellence and expertise within Europe on this subject 5. To liaise with other sections within the ECREA wherever possible. 7. To capitalize on online networks to gain visibility and participation across academic institutions as well as create a listserve to sustain these activities 8. To partner in constructing workshops that address specific strategies in understanding and using such networks to further practice in academic, governmental and corporate settings. 9. To develop and promote a high quality peer-reviewed journal to more formally contribute to the body of knowledge presented and discussed within the working group Overall, this section will serve as a critical starting ground for connecting with scholars within Europe on this topic of interest for joint conferences and publications of high quality.
