Language ideologies & new media

Hi everyone, For my Ph.D. research on language policy and new media, I am looking at the Facebook translations app and the language policy processes going on in this language community. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any studies out there published or in progress on language ideologies and the new media domain, particularly those in relation to minority languages. Given that this is still a 'new' and emerging field of research my reading to date has mostly been on language ideologies and for want of a better term the 'traditional' media, so I'd like to find out who else is out there doing this research in new media! Reminder: Call for Papers Research for Action: Networking University and Community for Social Responsibility Special issue of the Journal of Community Informatics http://www.ci-journal.net/ Submissions close 31 March 2011. Theme Following on from the successful workshop held in conjunction with Making Links 2010, this special issue of the Journal of Community Informatics will bring together contributions from a diverse range of disciplines to discuss how academic researchers and community practitioners and activists can work together to explore the use of information and communication technologies, social media, augmented reality, and other forms of network technologies for research and action in pursuit of social responsibility. The aim is to connect people with ideas, ideas with research projects, and harness new media to further inquiry into socially just outcomes in our communities. Topics Relevant topics include but are not limited to the following: Action research Civic intelligence Community engagement strategies, methods and approaches Community research partnerships for mutual advantage Ethical considerations Funding, managing and maintaining community-university research partnerships Participatory design Research impact assessment Role of university researchers in community-based research Organisation and Submission Details Authors are requested to follow the instructions at http://www.ci-journal.net/. It's only a matter of time before it crumbles. That, in a nutshell, is the view put forward by a group of US military thinkers in the latest issue of Strategic Studies Quarterly, who see the breaking up and "Balkanisation of the Internet" as natural as it is inevitable, and not without public benefit, assuming that the 'Net reorganises along traditional, nationalistic lines. … Inspired by the folk wisdom that good fences make good neighbours, there is a school of thought in the US military that posits a not-so-distant future in which the worldwide web will be divided up along national lines. Hi Gillies, J. & Cailliau, R. 2000, How the Web was Born, Oxford University Press, Oxford. is an interesting and thorough insider's account of the development of the web -- with chapter 1 devoted to the history of the internet itself. It also has a useful 10-page timeline for the period 1935-1999 Co-author Robert Cailliau worked at CERN from 1974 onwards, joining Tim Berners-Lee WWW project in 1990. Cheers Francesca da Rimini

I've encountered 1 or 2 items on this -- and some in the past -- that request course reading, but don't give scope conditions. What university? What discipline? What course? What's the ability and experience level of the students? What is their quantitative or qualitative analysis background? It's hard to suggest readings -- books or articles -- without such basic information. In at least one case, I couldn't even tell the counry from which the requester was writing.
