Online ethnography and Word Counts

I welcome any advice (off list, or on if thought to be of general interest). In communications, most journals have a word count limit of 7-8K. Even IJoC, an online journal not limited by paper constraints, is 9K. I generally support word count limits, but I have a draft wherein I excerpt and reference a lot of online discourse. I started at 11K words of prose, obviously far too long. After much slashing of clumsy prose, sacrificing of interesting digressions, and paraphrasing and cutting of cherished excerpts, I got it down to 8K. However, the bibliography is still about 2K (800 words of offline -- mostly secondary -- sources, and 900 words of online -- mostly primary -- sources). What are some options to being in such a pickle? * Are there reputable (even print) based journals that permit ~10K? * Perhaps in different disciplines (related to ethnography?)? * Or that distinguish between prose and bibliography (i.e., one can always print the bib really small)? * Break paper into pieces? (Always an option, but doesn't work for me here). * Host the primary sources online, but not in article? * Only provide URLs to those exclusively online sources. Social networks transforming how Canadians get the news

Dear colleagues Today, the Canadian Media Research Consortium (CMRC) releases its latest report, showing how the rise and popularity of social media are affecting how Canadians get their news - and from whom. The third in the CMRC's series of reports on Canadian news habits, Social Networks Transforming How Canadians Get the News shows that many people now expect the news to come to them, filtered by family, friends and acquaintances, rather than only by professional journalists. While Canadians still consider traditional print and broadcast media as an important source for news, the study found that 36 per cent of adults consider social media as an equally important source of news, with that figure jumping significantly to 61 per cent for younger adults. More than 18 million Canadians are now on Facebook alone. More than two-thirds of those surveyed who use social networks such as Facebook value them as a way of staying informed, with the majority saying social media exposes them to a broader range of news and information than traditional media. The findings help to illustrate the dramatic impact that Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms are having on news production and consumption in Canada. The report is particularly timely, given concerns that Canadians might share election results online this coming Monday before polls close, flouting a 1938 ban on the early broadcasting of results. An increasing number of organizations implement their business processes and applications via runtime composition of services made available on the Cloud by external suppliers. This scenario is changing the traditional view of security introducing new service security risks and threats, and requires re-thinking of current development, testing, and verification methodologies. Survey help: Two varieties

My colleague Barb Kaye and I are conducting a survey examining the relationship between blogs, social media sites, Twitter, YouTube and political attitudes and behavior. We have a promotion plan for blogs, SNS and Twitter (thanks, in part, from some great advice from people on the site), but we are still looking for an efficient way to survey individuals on YouTube. Call for nominations for the Social Informatics Best Paper Award The Special Interest Group for Social Informatics (SIG-SI) is seeking nominations for an award for the best paper published in a peer reviewed journal on a topic informed by social informatics during the 2010 calendar year. The author or authors will present their paper and receive a $1,000 cash award at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology in New Orleans in October, 2011. Nominations letters should be sent to Howard Rosenbaum (hrosenba(a)indiana.edu) or Pnina Shachaf (shachaf(a)indiana.edu) by June 30, 2011 and must include a full citation, a brief explanation for the nomination, and a copy of the article. IFIP9.5 WG Virtuality and Society Workshop July 26th 2011 ThinkLab, University of Salford [location] <location> {location;} Call for Papers Workshop Guide IFIP9.5WG’s Workshop 2011 will be a mixed physical and virtual workshop, including physical attendance at the ThinkLab, University of Salford, UK, and virtual attendance by video-conference. It is envisaged that European colleagues will attend physically, and those further afield, virtually, but this is not a hard-and-fast rule. Details concerning virtual participation are included below. It is intended that the entire proceedings will be webcast for those who cannot attend. Call for Papers Smartphones have enjoyed phenomenal growth in the latter part of the first decade of this century. By 2012 sales of such devices are predicted to outstrip sales of PCs, and by 2015 more people will be accessing the internet with such devices than they will be with a PC. Key to the growth and popularity of such devices has been the convergence, not just of telecomms and photographic equipment, which helped drive mobile phone sales, and the addition of internet access, which defined the smartphone, but the addition, following the success of in-car satellite navigation devices, of GPS receivers into mobile internet devices. The integration of GPS technology into smartphones, coupled with the consumer-led approach of Apple’s iPhone, gave birth to a whole new class of location-based services for mobile internet devices, available in particular for the iPhone, but also for Android, and other devices. As our lives become increasingly encroached upon by the digital virtuality of our exponentially advancing information society, will this be at the cost of our humanity? Writers such as Sherry Turkle and others seem to believe this is already happening in circles of people sitting together in silence engaging with their smartphones. When our senses are surrounded by interactive exposure to telepresent realities – the faces of those we are speaking to across the world overlaid upon the world before our eyes, streams of data passing across the pavements and shopfronts as we pass, electronic voices calling our name and tantalising us with goods they know we want (famously envisaged in the movie, Minority Report) – when the worlds around us are both real and virtual, will this grant us additional scope to express our humanity, or constitute such an overload that engagement fatigue exhausts our faculties? At our off-grid holiday resorts in rugged mountainous territory or remote wilderness encampments, luxuriating in isolation-downtime, delighting in the simplicities of one-to-one, face-to-face conversation with no distractions, in natural landscape with no overlaid streams of historical and commercial data, out beyond the boundaries of location aware personal shopping avatars telling us where to get what they already know we would ‘Like’, will we savour a richer, more traditional humanity we feel the hi-tech virtuality-soaked everyday of our lives has come to miss? Or does this vision of a virtu-reality that beckons in the coming decade mistake digital virtuality for something other than simply the latest manifestation of the - very human – dreams our ingenuity and inventiveness has managed to create?
