CFP PTC Conference "Harnessing Disruption" Due July 5

Colleagues (with apologies for cross-postings), I am pleased to announce that proposals are now being accepted for scholarly papers and panels for PTC'12, the 33rd annual conference of the Pacific Telecommunications Council (www.ptc.org/) The proposal deadline is July 5, 2011. Scholarly papers on topics consistent with the theme of the program are strongly encouraged. All academic papers are peer-reviewed for acceptance. Last year the acceptance rate was about 40%. Detailed information about PTC, the conference and the CFP can be found at: http://www.ptc.org/ptc/sites/default/files/PTC12_CFP.pdf The PTC membership has a strong academic component which is active in a range of activities with the organization. The Conference will be held January 15-18 in Honolulu, HI. The theme for the program is: "Harnessing Disruption: Global, Mobile, Social, Local." Any proposal consistent with that theme will be considered. Some examples of recommended topics include: * Mobile Money * The power of social networks * The social and economic impacts of communications in the Pacific * Disruption in the Telecom sector * The national broadband network trend: policy and practice * Geo-location There are cash awards for the best overall paper ($1,000 plus certificate) and the best student paper ($500 and up to $1,000 in travel support). There is a special academic registration rate. A selection of the best papers will be considered for inclusion in a special issue of the journal Telecommunications Policy. Accepted papers will be notified by August 8. To be considered for the best paper award, final papers must be submitted by September 26. All papers are due no later than December 5. Completed papers for the student paper competition must be submitted by September 6. While it is not necessary for paper submission and presentation, you are also encouraged to consider becoming a member of PTC. I know most folks on this list are PhD students and faculty, but if you know of younger scholars or phenomenal about-to-graduate undergrads who are looking for a paid research assistant position for the upcoming year, I'm looking to hire a RA at MSR in Cambridge, MA. Microsoft Research (MSR) is looking for a Research Assistant for its Social Media Collective in the New England lab, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Social Media Collective consists of danah boyd, Mike Ananny, and Alice Marwick, as well as faculty visitors and PhD interns. MSR is an academic institution and the Social Media Collective consists of scholars doing work in the areas of sociology, anthropology, media studies, and communications. An appropriate candidate will be both passionate and knowledgeable about social media, have strong writing and organization skills, and have experience working on research projects. Job responsibilities will include producing literature reviews, coding ethnographic data, editing manuscripts, and organizing events. The RA will also get to collaborate on ongoing research and, while a publication is not a guarantee, the RA will be encouraged to co-author scholarly articles while at MSR. The RAship will require 20-25 hours per week on site in Cambridge, MA. It is a 1-year only contractor position, paid hourly with flexible daytime hours. The ideal start date would be in May or June, but is flexible. This position does not include benefits or relocation. The candidate must already have a visa to work in the United States. This position is ideal for young scholars who are applying to PhD programs in sociology, anthropology, communications, media studies, information studies, and related fields and want to get involved with research. Current New England-based MA/PhD students are welcome to apply provided that they can commit to 25 hours of on-site work per week. Using archives of the web for research

Dear AoIR, OII is currently doing some work for the IIPC (International Internet Preservation Consortium: http://www.netpreserve.org) and part of the work involves identifying current and cutting edge research techniques and tools that are available for research on the live web, but that are currently either difficult or impossible to use with web archives such as the Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org/) or other IIPC member organisations. The short version of what we are hoping to get from this group: - do you know of any innovative uses of web archives for research? - what techniques for researching the live web should be adapted for use with web archives? - can you envisage any innovative uses of web archives (or other archived Internet data) for research that you would ideally like to be able to do? The longer version: What we are hoping is that members of AoIR will respond to us (off list) with your ideas about ways you research the live web that could potentially be enhanced using either snapshots from the web at different time points or longitudinal data about the web over time, but which would need additional support, training, tools, or infrastructure to be able to accomplish. Your responses will be used to influence the IIPC community to add web archive support for the kinds of cutting edge research that AoIR members are doing. Also, if you have any types of research or research questions you have been hoping to be able to do with archived internet data but have not been able to do for whatever reason, and you are willing to share the ideas and the barriers to researching them with us for possible inclusion in our discussion paper, that would be appreciated as well. Responses before 1 May will be most helpful. We will post the draft report back to the list in May, and the final report in the summer. PhD scholarship in the field of The history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv. The Graduate School of Humanities, Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, in collaboration with The State and University Library, invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in The history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv starting on 1 September 2011. Candidates who are awarded the scholarship must commence their PhD programme on 1 September 2011. The PhD scholarship will be financed by the Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, and The State and University Library. The PhD scholarship is advertised within the field of the historical interplay of media. Scholarship about the interplay of media (cross-mediality) is an emerging field within media studies, but especially the number of historical cross-media studies is very limited. With this PhD-project we wish to further historical studies of the interplay of media. Despite the fact that the history of cross-mediality is by and large unchartered, the phenomenon itself has a long history, and with the advent of new media types within the last 10-15 years (eg. internet and mobile media) the media interplay has grown. The project must be historical and it should focus on one or more of the following points: theoretical and methodological issues, institutions, production, content and forms of expression, reception, technology, and social use. The project should benefit from the existing collections of media content at The State and University Library, primarily the national internet archive Netarkivet as well as the collections of radio and television. The State and University Library wants to further research projects which shed light on how research accross the librarie's media collections can be undertaken.
