Call for papers Media Transatlantic IV – Traffic March 29 – 31, 2012 University of Paderborn, Germany Harold Innis taught us to look at the media as a form of traffic. Media products/signs travel just like things and people; constantly flowing, they overcome space and time, partly on communal and partly on dedicated networks. Traffic is the sum of its parts, made up of an infinite number of acts of transport and transfer. It is, however, more than that, because traffic has its own logic and forms its own structures and rules. Traffic is frequently compared with water: it finds a way, forms trickles, raging currents and dissipative structures. In certain places it collects, accumulates, stands still; or seeps away. Traffic and sign traffic cannot be stopped: they overcome any obstacle, penetrate everything and wear away anything fixed: one can plan, steer and direct them, but probably not control them. Sign traffic poses a particular problem when it comes to observation. There is no “royal over-looking position” from which there would be a view of the entire proceedings; it is difficult to describe in qualitative terms, while empirical approaches must rely on counting. This conference is intended to take up the image proposed by Innis and view the media as a form of traffic. To this end, the following questions, for example, are of relevance: • Which media phenomena can be described in traffic terms more accurately than in another perspective? Is it just a metaphor, or more? • Which conceptions of traffic are represented in which fields of knowledge? Which of them are viable in an analysis of the media? • Is a comprehensive traffic science, encompassing the traffic of commodities, people and signs alike, conceivable? • Would this be identical to a kind of media ‘logistics’? Or to a theory about society on the whole, if Marx speaks of ‘forms of intercourse’ and Luhmann of ‘communication’? • Which associations do the different connotations of the term entail? In English drug traffic, illicit transactions und air traffic control, in German communication in general, and sexual intercourse… • What is the relationship between traffic and infrastructure? Is traffic only possible on the basis of established infrastructures, or does infrastructure come as a consequence of traffic’s requirements? What is the relationship between traffic and technology? • Are there specific economic rules that steer the flow of traffic? • Does traffic –as an adaptive system– allow for a bridging of media theory, fluid dynamics and the analysis of complex systems? • What do network theories contribute to the understanding of sign traffic? • What role does storage –Innis refers to staple production– play in relation to flow and traffic? • Are there also traffic accidents, tail-backs or blocks in the media sphere? Journal of media and communication research Thematic focus: Media, Empowerment and Democracy in the Global South Editors: Poul Erik Nielsen (guest editor, Aarhus University), Norbert Wildermuth (Roskilde University) Submission deadline: SEPTEMBER 1, 2011 Publication date: Spring 2012 With the advent of web 2.0 and with the spread of mobile phones on a global base, conditions for and processes of citizen participation, public debate and social critique are changing. Information and Communication Technologies’ potential role in articulating citizen actions has been discussed in reference to recent events, such as the oppositional demonstrations in Tibet, Burma and Iran. However, while the use of social media and mobile phones in these events has received global attention, their de facto scope for democratic empowerment is contested and in need of further exploration. Other attempts to tap into the communicative potential of digital network media for the purpose of civic engagement, political deliberation and mobilisation for social change are furthered by web-based applications, such as Ushahidi, which played a prominent role during the 2008 post-election crisis in Kenya in crowdsourcing crisis information. Avaaz.org, a global campaign and petition network with more than 6 million members from over one-hundred countries, is another prominent example of the transformative power of e-mobilisation, which exemplifies the global-local nexus at the heart of e-participation and -mobilisation strategies. These ‘new’ developments, exciting as they are, run not only the danger of being interpreted in overtly optimistic and techno-centric terms, but also of diverting attention from the continued relevance of other mass, community and citizen media in contributing to communicative efforts for democratisation, empowerment and social change. The planned issue of MedieKultur therefore invites papers that discuss the present role of both Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and other media in an admittedly altered media environment. Communicative efforts to further democratic development and the empowerment of disenfranchised and marginalised populations demand scholarly attention to the lessons learned by ‘conventional’ media development and ICT-based initiatives. We thus invite papers with a thematic and theoretical focus on civil society based forms of communication for democratic deliberation and empowerment, in the broadest sense. Case studies and attempts to develop theoretical conceptualisations should explore relationships between media and communication developments, civil society, citizens’ engagement and governance processes. Dear Colleagues: Call for Participation: Doctoral Colloquium at the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) Annual Conference 2011 Internet Research 12.0 Seattle, Washington, USA In keeping with its commitment to students' scholarship in the Association of Internet Researchers, the Internet Research 12.0 Doctoral Colloquium offers Ph.D. students working in internet research or a related field a special forum on October, 10, 2011. Participants will have a chance to present their dissertations-in-progress and discuss them at length, with peers and established senior researchers. This year, Elizabeth Buchanan and Michael Zimmer will coordinate the Doctoral Colloquium, and will be joined by colleagues including: Mia Consalvo Steve Jones Charles Ess Hector Postigo (Others to be announced) Interested students should prepare a two-page summary of their research. Twitter Timeline Limits

Hi all, I'm working on a project with some colleagues regarding Twitter use and hashtags, and we are looking for a key piece of information: how long tweets are publicly viewable. Twitter's site used to say they were available "approximately 10 days." But now, there's no reference to this limit at all. The closest information I can find is that they now allow users to view 3200 of their most recent tweets. Does anyone know if Twitter has changed this limitation? Or where I might find more up-to-date information on this issue? We would deeply appreciate any help.
