We have a new in-depth presentation on our neighborhood-level Issues Forum work: http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/1215 (the audio version is at the bottom) While Hampton's i-neighbors.org site and the practice of Front Porch Forum recommends small typically private (not in Google) covering areas with around 500 residents, we've found our sweet spot at ~10,000 residents, in very public (therefore accessible) online spaces. We've further found that when you reach 10% of households (one member ~one household) the online exchange becomes quite self-generative. I am curious if others have explored these variables and compared either the user satisfaction with these differing models or any differences in the content exchanged? We do see real value private small scale electronic block clubs (covering under 100 households) out there that we are exploring - http://beneighbors.org - but with our Inclusive Social Media work - http://e-democracy.org/inclusion -with lower income, high immigrant communities, the word of mouth "virtual gated community" approach in larger areas seems to work against that goal. (On the other hand, the concern about over exposure online can be a limiting factor for many, but our foundation is civic engagement in public life.) So any researchers working on these questions out there? On a related note, I'd love to put a number to the comparable "likers" needed on a community-based Facebook Page, then Groups and neighborhood e-mail lists to generate similar traffic. Perhaps the best against the best ... my sense is that you need 10+ likers to generate the value of one e-list member in critical mass online spaces. It could be much higher. Is anyone out there researching the use of Facebook in rural communities and its connection to political and/or public life? When many of your friends are the "who's who" in a town of say under 20K how does this mix with public life. Are thing more or less transparent? Are connections among the "in" crowd excluding folks on the other side of the tracks or are socio-economic layers starting to mingle more? On another track with the tornados in North Minneapolis our Mayor was unable to "like" the Facebook page about it because he already had 5,000 friends. Your cap seems to combine friend and page liking. Folks were asking the mayor to respond but he couldn't.

distribute as appropriate, apologies for x-posting -jh Cultures in virtual worlds A special issue of the New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Guest-edited by Jeremy Hunsinger and Adrienne Massanari Virtual worlds (VW) embody cultures, their artefacts, and their praxes; these new and old spaces of imagination and transformation allow humans to interact in spatial dimensions. Within these spaces, culture manifests with the creation, representation, and circulation of meaningful experiences. But virtual worlds are not novel in that regard, nor should we make the mistake to assume that they are novel in themselves. Virtual experiences have been around in some respect for hundreds of years, and virtual worlds based in information technology have existed for at least 40 years. The current generation of virtual worlds, with roots over four decades old in studies of virtual reality, computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), sociology, cultural studies, and related topics, provide for rich and occasionally immersive environments where people become enculturated within the world sometimes as richly as the rest of their everyday lives. We seek research that encounters and investigates cultures in virtual worlds in its plurality and in its richness. To that end, we invite papers covering the breadth of the topic of cultures in and of virtual worlds. Some possible areas/approaches of inquiry: 1. How culture of virtual worlds affect relationships 2. VW interfaces and culture/s 3. Hidden subcultures/communities in virtual worlds 4. Ages and VW cultures 5. Emic and etic experiences of virtual worlds 6. Producing VW cultures 7. Traditional cultural/critical studies inquiries of VWs 8. Transnational or cosmopolitan cultures in/of VWs While all forms of scholarship and research are welcome, we prefer theoretically and empirically grounded studies. We seek a Special Issue that exemplifies methodological pluralism and scholarly diversity. The use of visual evidence and representations is also encouraged. We especially seek pieces that investigate virtual worlds that have received little scholarly attention. Submission guidelines This special issue is Guest-Edited by Jeremy Hunsinger (Virginia Tech) and Adrienne Massanari (Loyola University Chicago). Queries regarding the Special Issue should be directed to them at jhuns(a)vt.edu and amassanari(a)luc.edu. The Guest-Editors welcome contributions from both new researchers and those who are more well-established. Submitted manuscripts will be subject to peer review. Length of papers will vary as per disciplinary expectations, but we encourage articles of around 7000 words (longer articles may be possible, if warranted). Short discussion papers of around 3000 words on relevant subjects are also welcomed as 'Technical Notes'. in the uk the facebook pages of various anti-cuts groups were shut down before the royal wedding. I believe facebook claimed that they had violated the terms of use. however, one of the affected groups (the goldmiths students) made a freedom of information (FOI) requests to find out more. The response to the foi said: "These are questions relating to the operational policing of extremist organisations and as such the standard Neither Confirm Nor Deny approach applies. This means that the MPS will not confirm either way, whether communications with Facebook exist or whether requests regarding this matter were/were not made."
