FB vs. Google+ ToS's? Data-mining?

Hi all, I'm wondering if any of our sharp, lawyer-ly friends and colleagues have made a careful comparison between the ToS for FB and Google+? - and if so, if you can share on-list (or off) your initial findings, impressions, etc.? I'm particularly curious about the following. At the recent IACAP (International Association for Computing and Philosophy) conference here in Aarhus, one of our colleagues (with considerable expertise in the relevant technical domains) suggested that FB's dataset and data-mining techniques would allow FB to identify, for example, swing voters in a given state or nation - and then sell that information to the highest bidder (ostensibly, a political party wanting to win). Given what I know from the computational side (precious little, I admit), this does not seem implausible - i.e., technically feasible, if not already commonplace. If so - then is there anything in a ToS (whether FB's or Google's or ...) to prevent such uses of "our" data, i.e., the information we otherwise happily provide at no cost to such proprietary venues and services in the name of social networking, convenience, etc.? To my knowledge, José van Dijck has written most perceptively about this dimension of social networking - ³Users Like You², pp. 14-58 in Media, Culture & Society, vol. 31, no. 1. (2009) (and with thanks to my colleague Jakob Linaa Jensen for making me aware of this article). But certainly Sonja Livingstone, Nancy Baym, Janne Bromseth and Jenny Sunden, among other contributors to the Blackwell Handbook of Internet Studies articulate the broad concern and point that our participation in such sites and services raise a number of thorny ethical and political questions about our thereby giving up - for "free" - important personal data that others will use to their benefit, and not necessarily ours. two similar initiatives from germany have concurrently released manifesto's for "slow science". i have seen many of the topics (data collection, publication, research funding practices and academic positions) on this list. i wonder if similar positions are articulated by other academic communities and what some of you think of the topics raised? the manifesto of the slow-science initiative from berlin is as follows (http://slow-science.org/) THE SLOW SCIENCE MANIFESTO We are scientists. We don’t blog. We don’t twitter. We take our time. Don’t get us wrong—we do say yes to the accelerated science of the early 21st century. We say yes to the constant flow of peer-review journal publications and their impact; we say yes to science blogs and media & PR necessities; we say yes to increasing specialization and diversification in all disciplines. We also say yes to research feeding back into health care and future prosperity. All of us are in this game, too. However, we maintain that this cannot be all. Science needs time to think. Science needs time to read, and time to fail. Science does not always know what it might be at right now. Science develops unsteadi ly, with jerky moves and un predict able leaps forward—at the same time, however, it creeps about on a very slow time scale, for which there must be room and to which justice must be done. Slow science was pretty much the only science conceivable for hundreds of years; today, we argue, it deserves revival and needs protection. Society should give scientists the time they need, but more importantly, scientists must take their time. We do need time to think. We do need time to digest. We do need time to mis understand each other, especially when fostering lost dialogue between humanities and natural sciences. We cannot continuously tell you what our science means; what it will be good for; because we simply don’t know yet. Science needs time. —Bear with us, while we think. the other signed by academics, publishers, journalists etc. is in german can be found here (http://www.bosch-stiftung.de/content/language1/downloads/Thesenpapier_BWG…) the main bullet points are (i hope i do justice in translation): 1) even if it is against the economic interest of publication houses, the number of publications need to be reduced. 2) since scientific work requires other working rules then business oriented organizations, it needs basic funding. 3) the distribution of funding should be based on the content and objectives of the research, and not on unreflected promises of how the results can be applied in practice. 4) strategic authorship in order to increase the number of publications under the name of the person, in order to increase chances for funding, should be dismissed. 5) researchers should write their own applications for funding, instead of relaying this responsibility to academic consultants/agencies which write standard application documents. 6) the academic competition leads to complex and only lightly evaluated experiments. transparency with respect to data collection and analysis should be ensured to avoid experimental failures due to time pressure. 7) well founded project and research cannot be based on short-term/precarious contracts. notice that despite the somewhat humorously negative reference to social media, the berlin initiative has a facebook page. and, despite the desire to distinguish itself from "business oriented organizations" the document is a result of a discussion that took place at the robert bosch foundation. :) wishing you a nice weekend, s.

CALL FOR ARTICLES Special Issue: New uses of music in media Trans. Transcultural Music Review ________________________________ TRANS-Transcultural Music Review 16 (2012) will publish a special dossier on the new forms of music in audiovisual media. The dossier will be prepared in collaboration with the research group “Música y medios audiovisuales” from the Society for Ethnomusicology-SIBE/IASPM-Spain and will be edited by Teresa Fraile, Eduardo Viñuela, and María Edurne Zuazu. For this dossier, we are particularly interested in the role of music in the emergence of new genres (such as mash-ups, lip-dubs, etc.) and in the transformation of the discursive strategies of the traditional media (film, TV programs, music videos, video games, etc.). The contemporary audiovisual panorama is constantly changing. On the one hand, there is a fruitful interchange between different genres and formats, such as the dialogue between music, video, advertising and film; an interchange in which the music is deeply involved. This enables music to take different functions in the discourses of these media, thus transforming them, and at the same time, opens a new palette of expressive resources. On the other hand, the spread and democratization of new technologies has brought about these new musical genres that also imply new forms of consumption and point toward a different aesthetic framework. Music is now at the core of a boiling, creative audiovisual production where its relationships with image and the other sound elements are not what they used to be, forcing us to rethink our approaches and understanding of the role of music in media. We welcome contributions that approach these new phenomena and processes, especially those with an interdisciplinary perspective. Some topics include but are not limited to the following: Topics: · Music and the blurring of media genres and formats. · Sound art and image (sound installations, etc.). · Music in film trailers. · Audiovisual formats in live performance. · New forms of consumption and technology. · Rockumentaries or “making of” the album, band, etc. · Production of music for and with mobile technology (cell phones, MP3 players, etc.). · New theoretical models for media analysis.
