Dear Colleagues, We are happy to announce an upcoming Summer School 'Research on computer-mediated communication in linguistics (RCMCL)', to be held between 17-23 June 2012, Ascona, Switzerland. This international summer school addresses methodological issues on computer-mediated communication in connection with language use. The school caters to advanced MA and PhD students already working on CMC topics. Its aims are as follows: 1) To discuss cutting edge theoretical literature on methodologies in CMC/CMD (there will be a reading list). 2) To provide students with a set of tools to aid them in the preparation and analysis of CMC data. 3) To give students a chance to introduce their own research projects and discuss methodological challenges (with both other students and staff). A reading list with central theoretical literature will be provided closer to the time. Teaching methods will be a combination of input presentations, hands-on workshops and feedback sessions. We seek a humanities-based media studies scholar to join an innovative and interdisciplinary department that includes Film and Media Studies, Ethnography and Performance Studies, and Rhetoric and Public Culture. We invite candidates with a broad range of concentrations that consider instantiations and circulations of digital and social media, especially from the sites of television, video games, the Internet, and/or mobile social media. We are particularly interested in those who adopt a theoretical/critical, ethnographic, and/or historical approach to the implications of digital technologies in relation to one or more of the following areas: television, transmediation and convergence; national and global media production; and audience practices. Our new colleague will be responsible for developing an introductory lecture course about digital and social media and advanced undergraduate courses in digitaltelevisual studies, as well as for actively shaping and teaching graduate offerings in this field of study. He said he was patted down, handcuffed, taken off the train and held in a cell for three hours before being released without charge. Abidor said he didn’t get his laptop, with the sole copy of his graduate work, for 11 days. When he did, there was evidence that his files, including research, personal photos and chats with his girlfriend, had been searched, he said. The lawsuit was also brought on behalf of the National Press Photographers Association, some of whose 7,000 members have been subject to searches and seizures, according to court papers. The case is Abidor v. Napolitano, 10-cv-04059, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York (Brooklyn). To AIR researchers and their supporters, The following communications asks American researchers and supporters to "immediately" contact their congressional representatives and senators in the United States, to NOT CUT FUNDING, of a United States government entity that funds a large amount of social science research, which has the potential relevance to internet research projects, The U.S government funded organization is "the directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF)." Much of this could involve internet applications in some way and has the potential to involve funding for it much more it it were to continue. At a minimum, even if not directly referring to internet reearch, at least it creates an atmosphere of support and respect for such research and application.These notes and communications are especially pertinent to the research community in the United States, but have a wider significance because of lessons they hold for scientists in other nations.. GIGANET Global Internet Governance Academic Network in co-operation with Research ICT Africa CALL FOR PAPERS Sixth Annual Symposium 26 September 2011 Nairobi, Kenya The Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GIGANET), in co-operation with the Research ICT Africa (RIA), is seeking submissions of research about Internet Governance to be presented at the Sixth GigaNet Annual Symposium, held on 26 September 2011, one day before the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Nairobi, Kenya. Since 2006, GigaNet has organized an Annual Symposium to showcase research about Internet Governance, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach. Prior successful symposia took place in Greece (2006), Brazil (2007), India (2008), Egypt (2009) and Lithuania (2010). In 2011, the Internet Governance Forum has entered its second phase, after having reached the end of its first 5-years mandate. This years event will provide room to discuss the challenges encountered and results achieved during the first five years of IGF. As in previous years the GigaNet Symposium will further discuss current and future questions of Global Internet Governance.
