AoIR Ethics Guidelines Draft: Membership Comment and Review

Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the AoIR Ethics Working Committee, Annette Markham and I would like to announce that the Ethical Decision-Making and Internet Research (version 2.0): Recommendations from the AoIR Ethics Working Committee is now ready for AoIR membership review and comment. As you may know, in 2002, the first version of the document was released, and has enjoyed extensive use. Given the many changes in Internet studies and research since that time, the Ethics Working Committee has been working on a revision for a number of years. The draft revision has now been approved by the committee. We invite your comments, and your suggestions. We realize that discussions of ethics, in particular research ethics, generate much debate, given disciplinary, cultural, and epistemological differences. We have seen this over the years on the Air-l list, and we've reviewed those discussions as we've worked through this document. We hope we have provided a document that speaks to a range of stakeholders and represents the AoIR community. To review and comment on the draft, please visit: http://aoirethics.ijire.net/ Instructions for making comments are specified on the website. As described, we will collect comments through Sunday, October 2. An open session will be held during the AoIR conference, and is scheduled for Tuesday, October 11, at 4:00 (room TBA). Once all comments and considerations have been received, the document will be revised accordingly, and then will be open for a vote by AoIR membership. We look forward to your participation in this process. MT (rule-based, statistical and hybrid) is now available for many languages for free (on the Web) or for a fee and MT technologies are making strong inroads into the corporate localisation and translation industries as well as large public and administrative organisations dealing with multi-lingual content. Open-source MT solutions are competing with proprietary products. Increasing numbers of (professional) translators are post-editing TM/MT output. MT is a reality for internet users accessing and gisting content which is not available in their native language. Hello All--I have a grad student, not a member of this list yet, who is interested in representations of nuclear war, as part of this interest, is researching the "Fallout" video game series. He wonders if there's any existing scholarship that list members might point him to about 1) nuclear representations in video games, and 2) the need to teach video game literacy as either a subset of media literacy or a parallel to it. text for undergrad internet studies class

I'm once again going to be teaching a general internet/new media studies class to undergraduates. I taught such a class several times a few years ago, and while I used a variety of readings, I also used a textbook: Thurlow, Lengel, and Tomic's Computer Mediated Communication. As far as I can tell there is no new edition of this textbook, and it's quite dated now (I seem to remember being surveyed about a forthcoming edition of the book, but apparently that update never happened). Is there any kind of equivalent textbook out there? I really liked having the Thurlow, Lengel, and Tomic text and using other readings with it, so I hope I can find something to take its place for my spring class. Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Holly (I might add that I'm quite familiar with Nancy Baym's Personal Connections in the Digital Age and will use readings from it and quite recommend it, but I'm really looking for a textbook. Again, thanks!)

Science has become like Hollywood: pop stars are required so people are willing to do "whatever is necessary" to be a star. "Publish or die" seems to mean "publish, be cited at any cost, and make a lot of noise as if you were very important to become important". In this adventure of being academic, the difference between being remembered as as an important man of knowledge or just another romantic naive that failed, is having enough citations to validate you. A difficult and complex panorama to deal with... and now we will judge this man, but scarcely will talk about the system that created and pushed him towards such a fake. I find it sad and disappointing not only for him, but for the system itself.
