New technologies and biomedical treatments are reconfiguring addiction as a brain disease, and the concept of “addiction” is expanding to cover an ever widening array of substances and behaviours, from food to shopping. As addiction has taken up the discourse of neuroscience, gained some legitimacy within mainstream medicine, and become popularized through reality televisions shows and media attention to celebrity “addicts,” its cultural resonance has increased, but the meaning of “addiction” remains contested and confused. Despite new efforts to medicalize addiction, moral and punitive frameworks for addressing addictions persist, and theories about addiction are also increasingly framed within neoliberal and public health ideologies that emphasize the individual’s responsibility to make him or herself “well.” This edited volume of Advances in Medical Sociology aims to look critically at how addiction has been framed historically, how it being characterized and understood through contemporary cultural representations, how new treatments and technologies are reconfiguring addiction, and how “addiction” is being expanded beyond illicit drugs and alcohol to explain phenomena such as “excessive” eating and gambling and the exponential rise in prescription narcotic use. This volume also seeks to examine how medical, behavioural and punitive frameworks for understanding and treating addiction come together to shape and control “addicts.” Building on a rich sociological literature about drugs and addiction, this volume aims to interrogate the meaning(s) of addiction and critically examine the ways in which addiction is used as a lens for understanding individual behaviour, deviance, illness, politics, and policy. Empirical pieces are especially encouraged. This edited volume aims to be a benchmark text in the sociology of addiction, bringing together a broad array of critical perspectives and issues. Therefore, we are calling for papers addressing a wide variety of topics pertaining to the sociology of addiction, including - but not limited to: · Historical and new efforts to medicalize addiction · Critical interrogations of medical, public health, scientific, behavioural, moral, and punitive frameworks for understanding and/or treating addiction · Changing perceptions of addiction and addictive disorders within different settings and in the broader society · The rise of novel applications of addiction frameworks (e.g., obesity as caused by ‘food addiction’) and novel treatments (e.g., deep brain stimulation, vaccines, and psychopharmaceuticals, like buprenorphine and naltrexone) · Critical analyses of non-substance addictions (e.g., gambling, shopping, sex, internet, etc...) and how these support and/or challenge traditional notions of addiction · Representations of addiction in the media and popular culture · Addiction treatment interventions and how they reflect and/or shape larger sociopolitcal contexts · The relationships between frameworks for understanding addiction, interventions to address it, and subjectivity · The relationship between addiction and larger sociological constructs, such as racism, gender, structure/agency, etc... · The rise in addiction to prescription medications and how this challenges existing conceptual, policy and treatment approaches to drug addiction. This list should be treated as suggestive rather than prescriptive. Papers addressing other relevant topics are welcome as are informal inquiries about proposed topics. According to the 2007 revision of the United Nations’ World Urbanization Prospects, 70% of the world’s population will be classified as urban by 2050 and most of the people who will inhabit urban centres globally will be economically disadvantaged. We also know that school systems in cities around the world are challenged to provide socially and culturally meaningful education to increasingly diverse populations and, because of their inability to meet these challenges, many city youth do not receive the formal education they need to participate meaningfully in the world of work or civil society in the 21st century. At the same time, we see that city youth have increasing access to technology and many scholars have shown that youth are engaging technology outside of school in increasingly sophisticated ways. Because of this, technology is being called upon as an antidote to education inequity globally. These tools are used not only to engage students in meaningful learning experiences, but also to shape ways people participate and interact with the world. However, while there is burgeoning research around the role that participatory media play in improving learning, educators are identifying challenges toward implementation. Specifically, “research on teaching in urban schools suggests that teachers’ limited skills and limiting beliefs about their students lead to a steady diet of low-level material coupled with unstimulating, roteoriented teaching”. When applied to historically marginalized communities, participatory media acts as a powerful tool for amplification of voice and as a means to personalize content and assessments for the specific needs of marginalized youth. Part of the challenge that educators face is in looking at the ways youth come together and communicate to refine/establish new technologies. As we better understand how culture happens among young people, an understanding of how to develop new technologies emerges. This special issue explores ways that technology-based opportunities present strategies for closing a global literacy gap based on race and class. Specifically, this issue focuses on pedagogy and participatory media: - How are city youth demonstrating the potential of participatory media to intentionally develop a public pedagogy? - How are participatory media reshaping social thought and action? - How do educators leverage media in critical literacy development? What are examples of successful attempts of this form of pedagogy? - Are there ministries and departments of education or government agencies that are getting it right with respect to policies that promote the pedagogy of participatory media? - What are the risks of adopting participatory media tools developed for capitalism and consumerism? How are educators engaging youth in these topics? This is to announce an upcoming symposium and workshop being held on 6 Oct 2011 at Texas A&M University on new media, religion and digital culture. The Digital Religion Symposium will explore how new media is shaping our understanding of religion in a networked society. This event will feature presentations by: Pauline Hope Cheong, Associate Professor of Communication at Arizona State University, presenting her work on authority online especially as they related to Buddhist and Christian engagement with new media Nabil Echchaibi, Assistant Professor of Mass Communication at University of Colorado-Boulder, presenting on Islam and the Internet and related issues of religious identity negotiation online Christopher Helland, Associate Professor of Sociology of Religion at Dalhousie University (Canada), presenting on issues of ritual and authenticity related to Buddhist & Hindu online contexts The symposium will be held 9am-1pm at 410 Rudder Tower on the campus of Texas A&M and will involve presentations by the 3 speakers followed by a panel discussion on what studying religion online has to teach us about social and religious life in an information society. The event will also feature a workshop from 2:30-4pm in the Glasscock center library (Glasscock Building Room 310) on Researching Digital Culture. This will be an opportunity for faculty and graduate students to learn and ask questions about methodological and ethical issues raised by doing online research in various internet and virtual world environments. Gomorrah Streetview

Greetings to All, I have been recently working on an article regarding Google Street View as a tool for environment monitoring and reporting. To describe the core idea I leveraged the case study of the so-called Land of Fires in the Campania region (southern Italy). While I am still researching on this idea, I have published the article on my blog: "Gomorrah Streetview. Recommendations on mobile (phone) tech books

Greetings, all -- I was reading a few book reviews yesterday but thought I would turn to this knowledgeable body for recommendations on a good overview text on the history and current state of mobile (phone) technology and its social role - with emphasis on the latter, rather than on the historical bit. It could be a broader work on mobile tech, but I'm primarily interested in mobile/cell phones. I've come across Mobile Phones and Mobile Communication, by Ling and Donner, as well as Mobile Communications: An Introduction to New Media by Green and Haddon. Paper Proposals* For individual paper proposal submissions, please submit a 250-word (maximum) abstract by *December 23, 2011*.
