The exemplar virtual institution studied is the Humanities, Arts, Sciences and Technology Advanced Collaboratory (HASTAC or “haystack”), a network of over 9000 educators dedicated to innovative, technology-aided forms of collaborative research and teaching. Formed in 2002, HASTAC, now headquartered at Duke University in the Ph.D. Lab in Digital Knowledge, is currently adding 200-300 new members a month. The study mobilizes six years of the extensive HASTAC data pool, including the 176MB MySQL database of individual and institutional member profiles, for social network analysis, data extraction, text and content analysis, and procedural and organizational analysis. It provides critically needed evidence for the current and future capacities of institutions to support the interdisciplinary collaborations essential to meet the Grand Challenges (such as energy, water sustainability, or human sciences and policy design) confronting the world, especially those requiring collaboration among scientists working with humanists and social scientists trained to confront the societal and cultural factors that deter the implementation of scientific and technological solutions. Given the unique interdisciplinary nature of HASTAC as a virtual organization and the fact that this is a first, exploratory study of its extensive, accessible, anonymized “clean” individual and institutional data (in a Drupal database), this is a transformative, high-impact early-stage study for which EAGER was designed. Because one focus of the study is the 522 current students and recent alumni (80% graduate, 20% undergraduate) in 63 disciplines and departments on small scholarships from over 120 supporting institutions, the study will also test the hypothesis that networked interdisciplinary young scholars “outcompete” more traditional peers, another first commensurate with the EAGER mission of transformative knowledge with the potential for maximum impact. The intellectual merits of the project include modeling a method by which cyberfrastructure can enable successful collaborative research adaptable to other problem-based research centers and scalable to other projects, such as NSF-funded Science of Learning Centers (SLC); determining the best incentives for risk-taking early career interdisciplinary research; and calculating how voluntary, scholarly network and virtual mentoring support and promote early-stage researchers in both scholarly innovation and high-prestige academic achievement. The broader impact of the study is in addressing one of the most urgent structural problems in higher education and one on which there is little quantitative, data-based research: how to incentivize and support the range of cross-disciplinary researchers who must work together successfully in order to solve society’s biggest problems. At its broadest, it is anticipated that the study will intervene in current theories of organizational behavior, social media protocols, disciplinary and interdisciplinary formation, and self-governing systems, and lay the groundwork for increased collaborations dedicated to tackling the major problems and Grand Challenges of the 21st century. Call for Papers: Bridging the 'real' and the 'virtual'

Conference link is here: http://www.egosnet.org/2013_montreal/general_theme 29th EGOS Colloquium Montréal, Canada July 4–6, 2013 Bridging Continents, Cultures and Worldviews Sub-theme 55: Bridging the Real and the Virtual in a Digital World Call for Papers (due: Monday, January 14, 2013) In recent decades we have seen much 'cyberbole' about an emerging 'virtual society' in which digital technologies are supposedly transforming our lives. This putative transformation hinges on a polarity between computer-generated 'virtual' experiences and mundane everyday 'realities' in which we are limited by natural and built environments, geography, linear experiences of time and the confines of our bodies. In the virtual world the tyrannies of space, time, distance, objects and bodies can, to some extent, be overcome. Our analytical resources are arguably deficient to explain the organisational phenomena rapidly emerging on the back of advances in digital technologies. Where do the virtual, the material and the social fit in with everyday organisational experiences and practice? Is the virtual in the digital world 'material' or 'social' or both? Post-contingency theory organisation studies rejected 'technological determinism' in all its guises. Instead, various forms of constructivism and social shaping were developed, tempered by attempts to bring the material back in (McLoughlin & Dawson, 2003). In a radically new approach Barad (2007) suggests we need to rethink the bridge between the material and the social. This idea has been taken up enthusiastically in recent practice-based and sociomaterial approaches (e.g. Orlikowsk, 2010) which seek to avoid 'throwing the technology baby out with the determinist bathwater' (Clark et al., 1988). Bridging work, it seems, remains at the core of making, and making sense of social and organisational experiences in the digital world. The notion of bridging provides the basis for this sub-theme as a forum to reflect on and investigate relationships between virtual technologies and the real world organisations and settings in which they are developed, taken up and used (or not). In particular, we welcome papers on the following: • Bridging Distance (physical, social, cultural, geographical): Beyond the hype, how are technologies such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, ambient intelligence and immersive technology being used in organisations, and with what effects, to overcome the tyranny of distance? • Bridging Time: In the virtual world everything is speeded up. Virtual realities bridge time or even suspend notions of time in a conventional sense (e.g. gaming and simulation environments) through 24-hour global production or the creation of immersive virtual collaborative environments. • Bridging Space (home, work and third places): The cybercafé has emerged as the archetypal 'third place' in which innovation can occur in ways that are not so readily achieved elsewhere. Does virtual technology now allow a bridging between these spatial settings in ways hitherto unimagined (e.g. bridging video games with other activities, such as learning and work tasks)? • Bridging Projects: In the past decade we have seen some large and expensive IT projects fail spectacularly. What do they tell us about the ways we understand and manage (or fail to manage) bridges between the virtual and the real? • Bridging Citizen and State by making public services virtual. For example, government sponsored websites with advice about health, social security, immigration, law and so on are changing the way services are delivered. • Bridging Discourse and Cultural Practice: Efforts to improve technology design by involving potential users have been plagued by the inability of users and designers to commmunicate in a common language. Is a new and different discourse or cultural practice required to capture sociomaterial performativity? How can diverse worldviews be managed and harnessed to produce knowledge that is relevant and meaningful to practitioners from different disciplines? Public Lectures on the Psychology of New Media and Digital Piracy in IADT, Dublin

Apologies for any cross-posting Grainne The Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dun Laoghaire (IADT) is pleased to announce two public events being held as part of the Innovation Dublin 2012 festival. Both events are free, and examine human behaviour in relation to technology, the Internet, and digital piracy. The Psychology of New Media (7pm, 24th October 2012, Room A019, Atrium Building) The technologies we use influence our behaviour, sometimes in unusual and unexpected ways. Staff and postgraduate students in IADT examine many aspects of the psychology of new media, and this lecture presents highlights of their recent research. In particular, this event will focus on topics such as social networking, the use of artificial intelligence in customer service and therapy, using the Internet to search for medical information, online fraud and security, and the psychology of online dating. Digital Piracy & Psychology (5pm, 26th October 2012, Room A019, Atrium Building) There are many types of cybercrime but digital piracy is relatively unusual as its perpetrators rarely see themselves as criminals. As a result, the illegal copying and downloading of video, music and software is very common. This talk examines the psychology behind this offence, identifying why users engage in this behaviour and why they frequently don't see it as morally or legally problematic. The talk also uses psychological and criminological theory and research to offer suggestions on how levels of digital piracy might be reduced. Nature of duties General responsibility for research and research education (Ph.D. level) within the field of Media and Communication Studies and responsibility for developing the area. Teaching and tutoring at all levels; own research; supplying information about research and development in the research field; planning and leading (including applying for research grants) research projects; active participation in the department's efforts to integrate research within Media and Communication Studies, Human-Computer Interaction and Information Systems (IS) (with a focus on the challenges within the society of digital networks). The candidate who is hired will have particular responsibility for the MA programs within the area. Administrative assignments and management functions may be relevant. Required Qualifications The eligibility criteria for employment as professor are scientific as well as pedagogic skills (Higher Education Ordinance Ch 4 Sec 3). According to the appointment regulations at UppsalaUniversity, it is also a general requirement that teachers have other skills which are necessary to carry out their duties. According to the regulations, scientific skills should be demonstrated through independent research and the scientific skills should be demonstrated through research activities of high international and national quality. The applicants’ contributions to the research area of Media and Communication Studies will be evaluated in terms of quality and quantity of publications in the most relevant journals and other prestigious research outlets within the field. Experience in planning, developing and managing research projects are of importance, including experience attracting external research grants and documented experience in the supervision of Ph.D. students. To be eligible for appointment as professor applicants must have completed teacher training of relevance to operations at the University, comprising ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. In the assessment of teaching skills the following will be taken into consideration: planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching as well as supervising activities and examination. The ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement. An appointee that is only sufficiently proficient in one of these languages at the time of appointment is expected to be able to teach in the other within two years. Assessment Assessment for the appointment of the professor shall be based on the degree of the skills required for the appointment. For this position, the ranking will be based primarily on the scientific and teaching competences of the applicants, with special emphasis on scientific proficiency. This order of priorities of the different ranking criteria is not absolute. A combined consideration of all bases of assessment could result, for instance, in an applicant vastly superior in pedagogical proficiency being ranked higher than a candidate with superior scientific qualifications (who is considered less qualified pedagogically). In determining scientific proficiency, publication quality is the most important criteria. Following from this, publication quantity is important, as is documented ability to lead and develop research and documented experience in attracting external research funding. Established research networks and an ability to collaborate with surrounding society are also considered important. In examining scientific proficiency an important selection criteria will be applicants’ documented research addressing the challenges posed by the Information Society. Equal weight is given to the assessment of teaching skills and scientific skills. When determining pedagogical proficiency, documented experiences that demonstrate quality are the most important evaluation criteria. Following from this, skills and experience in the planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination will be considered. An ability to link teaching to ongoing research within the field is important, as well as documented experience of teaching at university level. An ability to collaborate with other actors within and outside the university around questions related to pedagogical questions is also important. Administrative skills are important in filling this position and will be given significant weight, the same goes for other merits of importance to the position. Attention will also be given to applicants' ability to: co-operate, develop and supervise activities and staff, interact with the surrounding community and to inform the public about research and developmental work.
