Dear AoIRists, On behalf of the contributors to and co-editors of _Cultural Attitudes towards Technology and Communication 2012_ (Proceedings of CATaC'12 - held in Aarhus, Denmark, July 3-6) - we are very pleased to announced that the Proceedings are now available online <http://blogs.ubc.ca/catac/proceedings/proceedings-2012/>. The Proceedings are hosted at issuu.com and will require registering for a free account in order to download the desired files. Just click on the blue "Create Account" link at the upper right-hand corner: you know the drill. With all due modesty: we are absolutely confident that the AoIR community (among others) will find no small number of papers in this year's Proceedings to be most interesting, relevant, and fruitful for a wide range of research interests that attend to culturally-variable and culturally-relevant dimensions, affordances, etc. of online communication. We are also very happy to provide AoIRists with advance notice that Proceedings from the previous CATaC conferences - i.e., starting in 1998 and held every second year since- will also be made available online within the next few months. *** Please feel free to circulate widely (apologies for cross-postings) *** 3-year PhD Scholarship (Understanding Mobile and Social Media in the Pacific) School of Media and Communication, RMIT University Australia Application deadline: 31 October 2012 This three-year scholarship is for a PhD candidate who will contribute to the fieldwork for an ethnographic study of mobile and social media in 1-2 Pacific countries. S/he will spend at least 12 months over the three years of candidature documenting, archiving and analysing mobile and social communication practices and infrastructure. As a discrete case study, but key component of the comparative study, the PhD candidate will participate in and contribute to a recently funded Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant "Mobilising Media for Sustainable Outcomes in the Pacific Region" (see below for project summary). They will also become a PhD Member of the Digital Ethnography Research Centre: * http://www.digital-ethnography.net* Eligible candidates will have a BA, BA with Honours or MA/MSC in Communication, Anthropology, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies, Informatics, Media Studies or other related discipline. They must be willing to undertake ethnographic fieldwork in up to two countries in Melanesia, Micronesia or Polynesia with a focus upon online and mobile media. Ideal candidates will have linguistic expertise and/or be willing to learn the language(s) of their fieldwork site(s). International and Australian nationals are eligible to apply. If you are working on cases of civic engagement through new media and are interested in tackling the questions we propose in the panel description (see below), please email Delia Dumitrica (dddumitr(a)ucalgary.ca) with a brief (150 words) abstract by next Monday, November 15, 2012. * * * Panel Proposal to ICA 2013, London, UK Communication and Technology Panel Session: New Media and Civic Engagement: From Networked Individualism to Collective Action Organizers: Dr. Maria Bakardjieva Professor, Department of Communication and Culture, University of Calgary, Canada Dr. Delia Dumitrica Instructor, Department of Communication and Culture, University of Calgary, Canada Abstract: This panel examines the mechanics of four cases of civic mobilization through new media, focusing on the exchanges between everyday life and the political sphere. The panelists are asking what their respective cases can teach us about the role new media play in the activation of ordinary people that leads to the development of political consciousness and participation in civic and political action. Our interest is drawn to the complicated exchange between a wide range of mundane uses of new media (from creating protest Facebook groups to liking politicians on Twitter) and the wider political structures. When and under what conditions do such individual activities supported by new media build up enough energy and scale to make an impact on the political sphere? How are new media contributing to the transformation of isolated acts of protest or challenge to the established order into collective action that brings about real change? And what happens once the political players, for their part, start employing new media for colonizing the energy of the grassroots? Maria Bakardjieva is looking at a case where new media became a key tool in inciting a wave of civic resistance against proposed legislation on Bulgarian forests. This bird of a feather session presents an opportunity for researchers of identity to discuss quantitative and qualitative online and offline methods used to study identity. We also welcome researchers who are questioning definitions of identity, deconstructing categories, pushing identity boundaries, and reconfiguring identification processes. While the majority of these internet users have incorporated the internet into their daily lives at very high rates, their use of social network sites and microblogs have not enjoyed the same levels of adoption. During this BoF session, we will discuss the growing online presence of older adults and how internet use at different life points may differ. The main idea is to stimulate a debate about the need to evolve from traditional ‘mass media’ or ‘Computer mediated communication’ theories - still used by many - and move forward. The idea is to reflect upon the need of building solid theory for current and future challenging scenarios (eg computers as we know them will ‘disappear’ soon). The session could be an ideal setting to think about ‘new’ theory with an interdisciplinary perspective, on the light of the future of internet studies. This award recognizes the growth and importance of new academic formats.
