All, I got enough interest in the object-oriented ontology conversation that I mentioned in response to Ravindra's question, that I think I will burden the list with it. Here's a lit review from a colleague of mine who specializes in this conversation. I would also add anything by Manuel DeLanda might be of particular interest to members of this listserv, as he comes out of a computer programming/visualization background. An Amazon search of his name comes up with all his main works. I would highly recommend his "New Philosophy of Society: Assemblage Theory and Social Complexity" for a readable, impactful treatise on this move from a purely linguistic view of digital and/or social systems to a neo-realist view that takes into account the materiality of these systems. Their interactions with the enterprise systems with legacy interface will be challenging. Big ERP provider such as SAP has already started their strategic plan to shift toward this direction. SAP is implementing a social media strategy to shift the perception of their ERP software from the company level to the individual level. Their recent plan to acquire Syclo, a leading provider of enterprise mobile applications and technologies, indicates their strategic move the enterprise software to the social level. Should the enterprise systems be changed to meet the emergent needs of next generation? What's the relationship between the enterprise systems and user experience? Many interesting issues should centre around interactions of this new user experience based on social media software between the experiences of enterprise systems with legacy interface. Cheers, Wenhong ********************* CALL FOR PAPERS ********************* The Internet, Social Networks and Civic Engagement in Chinese Societies A Special Issue for Information, Communication & Society (iCS) Guest editor: Wenhong Chen Aim and Scope The Internet and digital media have become conduits and locales where millions of Chinese share information and engage in creative expression and social participation. The Arab Spring and the relative lack of response in China highlight the importance of understanding the Internet implications in specific social context. Yet, compared to their growing prevalence and significance, research on the contingent, non-linear, and sometimes paradoxical impacts of digital media and technologies in Chinese societies remains theoretically underdeveloped and empirically understudied. Taking an eclectic approach, this special issue aims to advance a balanced and context-rich understanding of how digital media and technologies afford the construction of social networks and participation in civic engagement in Chinese societies including mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and the global Chinese Diaspora. It aims to reveal both the transformative power and the limitations of the Internet and other new communication technologies. It welcomes work with diverse theoretical and empirical approaches. Contributors are encouraged to examine the implications of the Internet and other new communication technologies for social networks and civic engagement, including but not limited to: . How do digital technologies and media allow actors to form and maintain social networks on- and offline? . What are the patterns and structure of Chinese social networks straddling boundaries of geography, identities, and issues in the Internet age? . Urban Audience Activities section (CfP 2 below) focuses on the diversity of audience activities in the multi-spaced and multiply scaled contemporary cities. The multiple and multiply divided nature of urban reality has deepened in novel ways through the development of networked digital technologies. The use of portable media devices in particular has rendered urban space increasingly multi-layered, as people may interact with their physically absent communities and visit online places while being on the move in the city. At the same time, through their smart gadgets, people are integrated with the software-supported urban infrastructure which grows out from an equally invisible but nevertheless material global techno-rhizome. This makes them active though not necessarily self-reflexive contributors to the dynamics of spatial power that today conditions the forms of urban communication and agency. The contemporary urban setting has started in recent years to increasingly fascinate scholars and practitioners as a context for people’s media relations. However, there is, as yet, little research on how the complex processes of city planning and design shape the digitalized and media saturated city and how these processes articulate and are entangled with power relations. Nor is there much research on the ways people shift between various media and technology related modes of action while dwelling in and moving about the city. In this double special issue Mediated urbanism of the International Communication Gazette, which follows up on the 2008 ICG special issue on Communicative Cities (edited by Gary Gumpert and Susan Drucker), we wish to address the digitally sustained urban environment in terms of public life. Our approach in the issue is to combine the perspectives of city planning and design, on the one hand, with the perspective of people’s activities as urban audiences, on the other. We welcome and strongly encourage for both interrelated sections contributions that foster dialogues across disciplinary boundaries. Ravindra, Coming from the humanities side of things (technical communication/digital humanities/gaming theory), there's a lot of work right now shaping up around an area of philosophy called Object Oriented Ontology, which asks whether like-buttons, algorithms, bots, etc. aren't actually actors within digital systems in the same way that humans are. A lot of folks, stemming from the work of Bruno Latour, have started to use the phrase 'non-human actors' to describe the ways components of digital systems actually write/communicate for us, or at least enable writing/communication in digital spaces. As is typical with the humanities, we are theoretically ahead of where we are research-wise with this, though: a lot of people in the humanities are thinking about this phenomena right now, but there are few (if any) empirical investigations of it that I could send you to... CALL FOR PAPERS 7th Annual Symposium 5 November 2012 Baku, Azerbaijan The Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) is seeking submissions of research about Internet Governance to be presented at the Seventh GigaNet Annual Symposium, held on 5 November 2012, one day before the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Baku, Azerbaijan. GigaNet is a scholarly community that promotes the development of Internet Governance as a recognized, interdisciplinary field of study and facilitates informed dialogue on policy issues and related matters between scholars and governments, international organizations, the private sector and civil society. http://giga-net.org/ Since 2006, GigaNet has organized an Annual Symposium to showcase research about Internet Governance, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach. Paper proposals should be submitted following these requirements: * An abstract of 800-1000 words, in English, where it is mandatory to describe the main research goal(s) and the methodological background of the paper * A short bio note focused on institutional affiliations, advanced degrees, scholarly publications and work in the field of Internet Governance and related issues (for example ICTs). Please include a link to a more detailed CV. * Important note: accepted abstracts will be required to deliver their full paper a month before the conference. Those unable to do so will be removed from the program. Process and publication The Program Committee members will evaluate the abstracts submitted and decisions will be sent to applicants by email before 15 June 2012. Accepted papers for oral presentations should be followed by a full research paper to be sent by 30 September 2012. Some quality papers submitted that are not accepted for oral presentations will be recommended for poster presentations. Accepted speakers and poster presenters’ submissions and final papers will be published on the GigaNet website. An online publication with selected papers on the main challenges of Internet Governance is also planned for the Azerbaijan IGF. Registration The GigaNet Annual Symposium is free of charge. online conferences in Second Life

Hello AIR folks, Jim Parker asked about conferences in Second Life.... yes, I've participated and presented at in-world meetings and conferences. I even had a "vendor" booth where I could chat about my books with passers by... and I've been found laughing out loud at my computer at the dancing avatars at a Second Life conference happy hour, complete with DJ and disco ball. Some conferences do a blended approach-- with events in Second Life complemented by other Adobe Connect/WebEx types of talks or forums for discussion. In one example, for a conference on "fit"-- about how people, jobs and organizations fit-- I did a lively presentation in-world. I wanted to compare ways organizations recruited people in the "real" world for jobs in Second Life with ways organizations recruited people in Second Life for jobs in the "real" world. I did a little tour, so we could look at some examples. It was pretty interesting and just a little challenging teleporting the participants from site to site. (I didn't lose anyone...) All to say, there are experiential opportunities in world unlike what can be done in other kinds of online conferences. I think it would be particularly interesting for the Communication Association to be able to reflect on the visual nature of communication in world, and the significance of "non-verbal" communications with avatars. The real issue is: are your association members open to this kind of event? Do they have avatars and are they willing to go into a virtual world?
