Impact on Netflix on Child Patience/Media Expectations

I just asked my four year old daughter for my mobile and interrupted her grabbing a quick show on Netflix. Having two small children almost exclusively raised on Tivo and Netflix with everything on demand must have some kind of impact. With the iPad I find myself saying, play a game, color, or visit the interactive dinosaur book instead of a "show." I'd say my kids are still modest when it come to overall screen time, but this on-demand/explore a lot approach must have an impact. Anyway, is there any research into the realm of note? Hi Andrew; I found the following book to be helpful when describing both the steps to produce a search engine, and PageRank-style techniques: Langville, Amy N., and C. D. Meyer. It starts at a relatively layperson level of explanation, getting progressively more opaque as you go along, in terms of the computer science. GigaNet is a scholarly community that promotes the development of Internet Governance as a recognized, interdisciplinary field of study and facilitates informed dialogue on policy issues and related matters between scholars and governments, international organizations, the private sector and civil society. http://giga-net.org/ Since 2006, GigaNet has organized an Annual Symposium to showcase research about Internet Governance, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach. Apologies for x-posting CFP: WAVES, BITS AND BRICKS: Media & The Production of Urban Space First Monday Special Issue Deadline for Abstracts: Friday, 16 May 2012 Deadline for Papers: Friday, 28 September 2012 CALL FOR PAPERS The ECREA Temporary Working Group “Media & The City”, the ARC Research Centre at the Catholic University of Milan and First Monday are happy to announce their collaboration for a special issue of First Monday titled WAVES, BITS AND BRICKS: Media & The Production of Urban Space, scheduled for publication in mid-2013. Matteo Tarantino and Simone Tosoni of Milan Catholic University will work with Edward Valauskas, Chief Editor of First Monday, as special editors. TOPICS As the majority of the world population has come to live in cities, urban space is ever more central as resource, commodity and medium. During the twentieth century Henri Lefebvre paved the way for the understanding of the social production of urban space as a complex and manifold process in which spatial representations, spatial practices and spatial physicality continuously interact. These interactions can also be influenced, mediated, negotiated or otherwise impacted by communication technologies, which thus become integral parts in processes of sociospatial production. Possible examples include: how technologies of geo-localization and related practices are re- shaping spaces for nightlife in contemporary cities; how metropolitan areas negotiate their social image among multiple processes of bottom-up (emerging, “grassroots”) and top-down (“branding”) representation; how mobile communication technologies entail new practices of walking and driving which contribute to re-shape transportation spaces; how new forms of Internet-based urban gaming are “gamifying” practices of cure of urban spaces (e.g. cleaning or planting flowers) rewarded through virtual “points”; the complex interplay between media representations, policies and social actors in the shaping and reshaping of contested urban spaces; the use of ICT in the planning and management of urban space. The list could go on indefinitely. WAVES, BITS AND BRICKS intends to focus precisely on these forms of interplay, with the objective of charting how media concretely impact on urban spaces in different geographical and historical contexts. As such, approaches disjointed from their concrete impact on spatial production (e.g. taxonomies of city representations in cinema or analyses of mobile communications focused on users alone) are discouraged. As the relationships between media and sociospatial production can be approached through a variety of paradigms, contributions are encouraged from fields such as planning and architecture, semiotics, science & technology studies, urban sociology and anthropology, communication studies. Empirical and theoretical contributions are welcome, as are critical reviews of existing approaches to the media/sociospatial production nexus. Abstract: Like with the emergence of oral language and the invention of writing, printing, and electronic media, today digital media entail a revolution of society. In our present time we are living through the incunabula of a digital revolution. This means that many things in society find new forms, and we must find new ways of doing things, because our media milieu has changed. Also in schools many things are changing; the classroom is no longer a closed room where interaction is isolated from the external world. Thousands of parallel interaction systems are intermingling within the social situations in classrooms, and many problems arise because of missing adequate norms. Students can now access knowledge in the Internet’s thousands of databases and wikis. The upshot is that the old teacher authority and traditional social norms for guiding teaching can no longer help outline efficient behavior in the classrooms. On this basis, we present the action research project Socio Media Education, which tries to develop new ways of teaching that feed to the new media environment. The aim of the paper is, on an early stage, to report about the challenge of the new social media and how the project tries to find solutions and the philosophy behind these solutions. But not everyone is equally included in this project. Breaking new ground with its focus on inclusion, and drawing on an extensive body of European research, Technologies of Inclusion: Gender in the Information Society analyses a range of strategies which succeeded in attracting more women and girls as users or designers of ICTs. This reveals a set of underlying dynamics -- what the authors call technologies of inclusion -- by which different strategies work.
