Hello AIR members! My name is Danilo Giambra and I am a PhD Candidate at the University of Otago, New Zealand. My research focuses on Japanese New Religions online communication, and in particular looks at religious communication over the Social Networks. I need to collect posts and tweets (in Japanese) of users from multiple social platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Mixi.jp. I would also like to build a private database containing the collected data, so that they remain searchable and can be analyzed later. Would you have any suggestion about 1) how to save users' contributions (possibly including pics and geospacial info)?, 2) how to create a database like this, and which software to use (open source or affordable options preferably)? Fee Waiver/Travel Stipend for IR13.0 (deadline Aug. 15)

Conference Scholarship In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available up to three conference fee waivers and travel stipends per year. The number of fee waivers and travel stipends will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be directed to the President of AoIR (Alex Halavais, prez(a)aoir.org) and must be received by August 15, 2010. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: 1) A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the AoIR IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the annual AoIR Internet Research conference. 2) An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver. These may include, but are by no means limited to: * exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); * exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); * other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her / his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is optional, however, not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers and travel stipends of up to $500 will be awarded on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there will be more fully meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless, we hope that awarded fee waivers and travel stipends will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also thereby enrich the IR 13.0 conference in important new ways.

Internet Computing is mostly read by geeks, including a combination of industry and academic folks. These battles impact and are impacted by the Internet’s technical structure. As the Internet continues to embed itself into our world, its structural changes will have an increasing effect on our social and political structures and vice versa. Call for Foreign Members of the National Scientific Qualification Committee

Dear friends and fellow internet researchers, a recent legislation has substantially modified the recruitment system for academic staff in Italy. The new procedure is based on a national competition for the National Scientific Qualification (abilitazione), which from now on is required to enter Italian universities as associate or full professor. The qualification, comparable to the French “qualification”, is granted by National Committees, one for each group of disciplines (a total of around 200 distinct groups). All committees are made up of five members, four affiliated to Italian universities and one affiliated to a foreign university (OECD countries). Members from foreign universities must hold a position equivalent to that of a full professor. I believe it's crucial to try injecting some internet research background and culture in this commissions. The post shall be entitled with an honorarium of Euro 16,000 for the whole period, plus expenses. Re: [Air-L] Using screen captures in Thesis paper

Hi everybody, This is a question that also I've been pondering at the moment. I'm analyzing the content of some celebrity gossip sites and showing a print screen of the site's layout to my readers would be significant. But the problem is that those sites are typically overloaded with celebrity images, which makes the copyright issue a tough question (By no means, I'm going to ask separately the permission of every single photographer or media corporation behind those pictures). On the one hand, I would say that if you can justify using print screen pictures as a part of your analysis, the use falls into the category of fair use (although most of websites deny any use of content for any other reasons than merely personal and informational ones). The another problem I have faced is that academic journals have commercial interests as well (nowadays more and more), so it's not so simple. I would say that the use of print screen pictures would fall into "fair use" easier when it concerns thesis papers, not articles meant for academic journals. And if my thesis paper would not be published online, I would not hesitate using a print screen picture if I am able to justify the use. Anyway, I think it's a shame that some copyright issues try to hinder effective academic critique, or at least, make it very complicated. Maria
