***apologies for cross-postings*** Digital Humanities and the Study of the Web and Web Archives PhD-seminar organised by the Digital Humanities Lab/NetLab (Niels Ole Finnemann and Niels Brügger), Vejle, Denmark, 3-5 December 2012 Today the Internet is the medium which holds the most multifaceted set of materials documenting contemporary social, cultural, and political life. It has become the fulcrum for the general development of media, including mass media and a growing variety of digital devices. If the communicative infrastructure of society in the late 20th century was centered on television, it is today centered on the Internet. As a variety of digital media penetrates all spheres in society, they also play a still more dominant role for the social sciences, humanities and arts. They do so in three respects: as archives for contemporary life, as a toolbox for the study of all sorts of digital collections, including digitized collections of non-digital materials (often labeled cultural heritage), and as a means for enforced communication within all spheres of society. In this course we will concentrate on the first of these aspects, the role of the Internet and particularly on online and archived web materials for scholars studying contemporary political, social, and cultural phenomena. It promises to revolutionise the underlying telecommunications infrastructure of the nation while reshaping Australia’s policy environment for telecommunications. Broadband is not just about higher speeds and ubiquitous connectivity but a complex social system that can affect the various aspects of social productivity, enhanced community engagement, improved education and health systems. The NBN is notable for the level of criticism it has attracted, principally within the fractured political domain, but also from those who see alternative visions of network connectivity based on mobile communications. Its ongoing deployment may be affected by changes to governments; however its fundamental rationale and design is already remaking our use of the Internet, through changes to regulation, consumer expectations, service delivery and more. The Symposium will offer an exciting and challenging look at the critical questions and issues we face as the NBN commences widespread operations in Australia. We bring together scholars, industry analysts and participants, and government regulators and policy makers to address the important issues that arise. Computer is broadly defined as any computational device, whether smartphone or abacus, and any form of information technology, including the origins of concepts of interactive text which may predate computational devices as traditionally conceived. Culture is rooted in the concept of cultural meaning. We ask not just operational questions such as, "How do people communicate using computers?" but questions of meaning such as, "What does it mean when people communicate using computers instead of using pre-computer approaches to communication?" "Computer Culture" can be understood in a variety of ways: - the culture of the computer, that is, as computers interact with each other, what culture do they have of their own? - the culture around the computer, that is, (sub)cultures associated with the production, maintenance, use, and destruction of computers - the culture through the computer, that is, explicit treatment of how computer mediation influences cultural phenomena that exist or has existed in forms that did not involve computer mediation, and what these influences mean - the culture by the computer, that is, the ways in which new (sub)cultures or (sub)cultural phenomena have arisen because of computers and understandings of these given awareness of the nature and/or workings of computers Example questions associated with Computer Culture would include, but not be limited to: * What implications are there because of the powerfulness of (computer/information) technology ___ and are these implications beneficial, detrimental, inevitable, or avoidable? * What are the cultural origins of computers, computer/information technologies, and practices (such as ____ ) associated with them? What is the descriptive and prescriptive outlook for the conditions of those cultural forces associated with those cultural origins? * How do cultural forces (such as changes from one generation to the next, trends in education or society, or other cultural phenomena) impact (and are impacted by) computer/information technologies/market-forces, and what do these impacts (in either direction or both) mean? Paper topics might include (but are not limited to) those that address: - issues of (re)presentation through computers (Web site analysis and design), - methods of discourse involving computers (blogging, Twitter, social networks, viral video, live feeds), - theories focused on the relationship between computers and culture, - uses of computers in particular contexts and the impacts thereof (computers and pedagogy, online literary journals), - the relationship between computers and cultural forces (such as news, politics, and terrorism), - security/privacy/fraud and computers (online security issues, spam, scams, and hoaxes), - and others. While we will consider any relevant paper, we have a preference for those that involve transferable methodological approaches. This is an interdisciplinary conference, and other conference attendees would benefit from being able to adapt your research methods to their future research. Scholars, teachers, professionals, artists, and others interested in computer culture are encouraged to participate. Hello, A number of folks have inquired about the program for IR13.0, mostly asking where it is. Although it was mentioned in an email to authors, a draft version of the program can be found here: http://bit.ly/ir13program I will reiterate that this is a *draft*. As the authors' registration deadline approaches (today in most of the world!), we will remove presentations of those who have not registered. Already, you may find your presentation has moved, as we have attempted to reduce the number of parallel panels. In general, we will try to keep your presentations close to where they have already been scheduled, but I urge you to keep in mind that this is a draft program, and subject to change. I recognize some of you are hoping to dash out for Sunday travel, and while I understand the reasoning, please be aware that we are programmed through to the beginning of Sunday evening. And at that point, there will be food and wine at the banquet. And with it, you might expect spontaneous dancing, unintended revelations, over-familiarity with newfound friends, and general carousing. Seriously, who would choose a coach seat on a transatlantic redeye over that?
