Ken Hillis Professor and Chair Department of Communication Studies The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3285 USA ----------------------------------------------------------- Announcement of Faculty Position in the Department of Communication Studies The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill POSITION Assistant Professor in Media/New Media Production, beginning July 1, 2014. Responsibilities include: teaching undergraduate media and new media production classes; engaging in non-fiction creative/research practices; working with graduate students on their dissertation research involving production as needed; and performing departmental, university, and public service. Salary is competitive. QUALIFICATIONS M.F.A. or Ph.D. (or conferral during the 2013-14 academic year) in a media-related field, and an active practice in that field. We are particularly interested in candidates who are committed to innovative approaches to non-fiction production practices, who use contemporary media platforms to foster imaginative modes of research and new modes of communication, and who have the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary environment. The successful candidate will develop creative projects that: engage history, theory and criticism; the concept of critical making; contribute to the interdisciplinary New Media track that the Department is developing in conjunction with Computer Science and Library and Information Science; and potentially contribute to UNC’s digital humanities initiative. Non-fiction practices might incorporate (but are not limited to): film and video documentary, animation, audio art, game platforms, locative media, mapping, virtual environments, and visualization. Our facilities include a Mac-based media lab with 40+ workstations equipped with the Master Collection Suite of Adobe products, a 115-person auditorium with HD projection capabilities, and a 2,000 sq. ft. studio space with green screen and voice over booth. GENERAL INFORMATION The Department of Communication Studies has 30 full-time faculty with areas of emphasis in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication, Rhetorical Studies, Performance Studies, Media and Technology Studies, and Communication and Cultural Studies. Approximately 850 undergraduate and 50 M.A. and Ph.D. students major in the department. The department is committed to the integration of theory and practice, and engaged scholarship, broadly conceived. New Report from UNICEF: A Global Research Agenda for Children’s Rights in the Digital Age The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other children’s charities need to rethink how digital technology and communications are affecting the rights of children around the world, according to a new report from LSE. The report, A Global Agenda for Children’s Rights in the Digital Age: Recommendations for Developing UNICEF’s Research Strategy<http://www.unicef-irc.org/publications/702> by Professor Sonia Livingstone and Dr Monica Bulger of LSE argues that the UN children’s charity should adopt new research methods in order to get robust evidence on how children are using information and communication technology (ICT), and how this may affect their rights and wellbeing. Even though children’s digital activities are growing quickly, many of the creative and interactive features of the internet remain substantially underused, especially in lower-income countries and among marginalised children. The growth in ICT around the world is also increasing ‘offline risks’ such as bullying, exposure to pornography and unwanted sexual solicitation. The number of households with internet access in developing countries has nearly doubled in the past five years, and looks set for significant further growth. Having conducted interviews with internet and child welfare experts around the world, the report authors conclude that there is a pressing need for research insights generated in the wealthier global North to be extended or complemented by research in the global South. With better evidence about children’s internet use, UNICEF and other children’s charities would be able to campaign for more effective policies. This would give more children, from all over the world, greater opportunities to benefit from the internet while being protected from the associated dangers. Commenting on the report, Professor Livingstone said, “Drawing the line between offline and online is becoming increasingly impossible. We should anticipate that almost any experience will now have an online dimension. Much of this attention has been devoted to important and exciting explorations using geoweb or Geospatial Web frameworks, often prioritizing the work of GIS, big data, and/or, reflexively, science and technology studies (STS). While the digital humanities are exploding onto the academic scene--not only foregrounding a disposition toward a creative criticism that is generative, but also simultaneously posing questions of interest to literary and social theory--"digital geographies" are beginning to emerge. What can geography bring to the table? How might we embrace not only digital geographies that explore the digital, the computational, or the algorithmic, but also embrace geographies of digitalia, i.e. the social construction of our everyday lives and space through the imbrication of the digital and the material? In this session, we are interested in fostering a broader diversity of digital scholarship, qualitative and quantitative, that consciously engages digitally, yet may or may not take 'the digital' as its object of study. We are particularly interested in papers that provide theoretical, methodological, and/or analytical insights into digital approaches to geography. CALL FOR PAPER SUBMISSIONS AND REVIEWERS As the vice chair and paper review competition coordinator for the International Communication Association's Game Studies interest group, I want to remind all of you that you are invited to submit papers to the Game Studies paper competition for the upcoming ICA 2014 annual conference to be held 22 to 26 May, 2014 in Seattle. Papers must be submitted online using the ICA online submission system (http://www.icahdq.org/cfp) by 11 p.m. Eastern U.S. time on 4 November 2013. We welcome papers from a variety of disciplinary approaches on a broad range of topics dealing with the study of games and the game experience. More details about our paper competition and the general ICA call for papers guidelines can be found at the group's web site, http://icagames.org. Whether you are submitting a paper or not, we are also seeking reviewers to help us with this year's paper competition and we hope that you’ll consider volunteering. We recognize that your time is valuable and as a result, we work to limit the number of papers assigned to any given reviewer. CALL FOR PRE-CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS Beyond the Pixels: A Look at Digital Games Pre-Conference to the 64th International Communication Association (ICA) Annual Conference Seattle, WA, USA Wednesday 22 May, 2014 Digital games are an integral aspect of many lives – they’re in social networks, they’re on mobile phones, and they are, as ever, on television and computer screens. Their influence is not limited to the screens or the devices in which they exist, but can be experienced well beyond their original digital footprint. The goal of the 2014 pre-conference, “Beyond the Pixels,” is to take it one step further and encourage scholars to think outside the box. This pre-conference will be a space to think about the marks that digital games are making on our world. Submissions should look within the game, outside the game, and around the game for their inspiration. Careful consideration of the influence of specific elements of the game design itself, such as avatars, sound, user interfaces, types of game play, are welcome. We encourage innovative challenges to the notion of digital games as having a singular influence on the user, and the implications for that influence as it relates to broader society. Considerations for the infrastructures that have developed around games and continue to influence games, as well as explorations of the communities that develop around, within, and beyond games, are also encouraged. Potential pre-conference topics include but are not restricted to: · Game content · Game design choices and their implications · Game elements such as avatar, sound, and user interface · Solo vs. social game play experience · Cross modal games · Game analysis from critical to analytics · Innovative methods for studying uses and applications of games · Impact of designing games for educational, health, moral, or commercial gain · Academic vs. industry game research · Game research methods Push the boundaries. Extended Abstracts Anyone interested in presenting at the pre-conference is invited to submit an extended abstract between 1000-1500 words in APA 6th style to the pre-conference organization committee before 23:59 EST, December 1, 2013. The abstracts will be subject to a double blind peer review process; therefore all identifying author information should be removed from the abstract. Notification of acceptance will be sent by February 1, 2014. To submit, please e-mail a PDF version of your extended abstract with title as an attachment to preconference(a)icagames.org. When submitting the abstract, please also include a separate cover page including the title of your extended abstract, along with your name, title, department/organization, address and e-mail information. Submission of work in progress is also welcome as long as the work can be completed by the month of the pre-conference. The extended abstracts submitted for the pre-conference should not have been submitted to any other competitions in the ICA's main conference or any other venue. The pre-conference submissions will be refereed and programmed separately from ICA’s main conference. All those who are accepted to present their extended abstract should register for the ICA pre-conference by April 3, 2014. Please note that accepted extended abstracts may be published in the on-line pre-conference proceedings. Those who wish to be considered for publication should let the pre-conference organization committee know in their e-mail submission whether or not they want to be included in the proceedings. Call for papers: Digital Humanities: Now and beyond Submission deadline: February 1, 2014 Publication deadline: Fall 2014 Editors: Mia Rendix (Aalborg University, Denmark), Ditte Laursen (State Media Archive, Denmark) When the American scholars Jeffrey Schnapp and Todd Presner launched their influential and controversial ‘Digital Humanities Manifesto’ in 2009, it heralded a new age in the humanities. In 2011, Europe published a ‘Manifest for the Digital Humanities’, which was developed during the ThatCamp conference in France. Despite their rhetorical, instrumental, and transatlantic differences, it was clear that digitization had entered the realm of the humanities for good. Due to the technological improvements and far-reaching possibilities presented by the internet, digitization fundamentally challenged and altered the ways in which we organize our universities, create new institutional models, and ultimately how we think about and perform basic humanities research. >From its inception, however, the term ‘digital humanities’ has been a hypernym covering several factions and methodological and theoretical approaches. It thus remains widely debated and constantly negotiated. In addition, discussion as to whether digital humanities is or should be regarded as autonomous or whether it should interact or interrelate with the traditional humanities has been a constant source of conflict between different – and often ideological – discourses. MedieKultur welcomes both theoretical and empirical articles on the current and future versions, perspectives, and/or problems of digital humanities. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: – What have we learned from the digital humanities so far? – What is the future of the digital humanities? – How does the digital influence research practice in the humanities— as source, as method, as tool, and as means of enforced communication? – What new questions and approaches does the digital enable within the humanities? – How do archival means of collecting and making available digital data affect the scholarly use of this data within the humanities? – How do the digital and the non-digital differ, and how can new constellations of the digital and the non-digital within the humanities be conceptualized? – In what way does the digital humanities represent a national-regional or universal vision? – How can new digital infrastructures be incorporated into and implemented on the institutional level?
