Jerry! Very glad you reached out the listserv, as your dissertation topic is very much in line with my own dissertation work on the intersection of hacking, disability, and youth. I've got lots of resources that I'm happy to share with you. First off, I gave a talk at this year's Digital Media & Learning conference on "mixed-ability maker culture" that you might find helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzyYqLNoLy0&feature=youtu.be In terms of accessible makerspaces, see DIY Ability and the Adaptive Design Association in NYC (http://diyability.org/) and also the Assistive Device Center at the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston ( http://www.perkins.org/inside-perkins/assistive-device-center/) There's a growing community of scholars interested in critical disability studies and technology too within the Society for Disability Studies , including Mara Mills (NYU) and Aimi Hamarie (Vanderbilt). Hello, I am a PhD student at Syracuse University and I have been a lurker on this listserv for a while. I am in the beginning stages of writing my dissertation proposal and I need to determine the feasibility of my research in terms of recruitment. I am interested in the do-it-yourself (DIY) practices of persons with disabilities. More specifically, I am interested in exploring the ways in which persons with disabilities address technological, environmental, social, economic, or various other forms of inaccessibility and challenges resulting from functional impairment via their own unique practices, adaptations, modifications, and innovations. I would like to know if there are any makerspaces, hacker communities, or conferences where persons with disabilities come together to engage in and/or discuss accessibility hacking, making, or DIY activities? Does anyone know if these communities or venues exist? I am familiar with several online communities where people share and discuss their own DIY efforts but I want to know if similar communities exist offline. Thanks! Online focus group?

Does anyone know of any articles that address using a web discussion board/forum (a private one of course) as a focus group tool? Specifically, I intend a one time board that is only set up and used for a focus group with invitees. DC area event for people involved in online research

Hi there, We're planning another lunch in October: Details: In August we hosted the first Online Research, Offline Lunch for researchers involved in online research in any field, discipline or sector in the DC area. Although Washington DC is a great meeting place for specific areas of online research, there are few opportunities for interdisciplinary gatherings of professionals and academics. These lunches provide an informal opportunity for a diverse set of online researchers to listen and talk respectfully about our interests and our work and to see our endeavors from new, valuable perspectives. We kept the first gathering small. But the enthusiasm for this small event was quite large, and it was a great success! The book series Studies in Mobile Communication, edited by Rich Ling and Gerard Goggin, seeks high-quality monographs on mobile communication that demonstrate theoretical or methodological advances in the field. Especially welcome are book projects that address understudied countries, regions, or cultural settings, or pursue new dimensions of mobile communication. The goal of this series is to foster the development of monographs that provide a broader understanding of mobile communication, new media, and culture across the social sciences and humanities.
