CFP: Special Issue of Computational Culture on Rhetoric and Computation Rhetoric has historically been a discipline concerned with the ways that spoken and written language shape human activity. Similarly, emerging work in digital media studies (in areas such as software studies, critical code studies, and platform studies) seeks to describe the ways that computation shapes contemporary life. This special issue of Computational Culture on "Rhetoric and Computation" merges these two modes of inquiry to explore how together they can help us to understand ways that our communication and computational activities are now constituted by both human and computer languages. Coupling the analysis of rhetoric with computation provokes a number of questions: How is the rhetorical force of computational objects different from or similar to that of language, sound, or image? What new modes of communication open up when we view computation as an expressive medium? How does computation shape or constrain rhetorical action? What new tropes, figures, and strategies emerge in computational environments? How do programmers deploy rhetoric at the level of code and interface? These questions are not exhaustive, and we welcome papers or computational projects that pursue these questions and others like them. Topics or projects might include: - Computational artifacts (such as videogames or art installations) designed to make procedural arguments and model systems or phenomena - Analysis of multiple choice tests processed by computers as rhetorical artifacts, aimed at both human (citizens, students) and nonhuman (machine) audiences. - How computational strategies such as surveillance supercede more traditional spheres of rhetorical deliberation such as written law - The ways in which computational data interpellate individuals and define citizenship - Strategies of the "quantified self" as a way of shaping human behavior - Rhetorical analysis of computational systems used by governmental, educational, and political entities - How computational systems are described for different audiences from groups of expert programmers to the general public - The use of software algorithms to simulate and evaluate various activities, such as writing and conversation - Rhetorical strategies deployed by communities of programmers and designers in marginal comments, online forums or physical workplaces - Analysis of computational machines as rhetors (i.e., understanding the actions of such machines in terms of the tropes, figures, and strategies they deploy) 300 word abstracts are due November 25, 2013. Abstracts will be reviewed by the Computational Culture Editorial Board and the special issue editors. Authors of selected abstracts will be notified by January 31, 2014 and invited to submit full manuscripts by April 1, 2014. These manuscripts are subject to outside peer review according to Computational Culture's policies. The issue will be published Fall 2014. Visiting International Fellowship in research methods at Surrey

Between one and three Fellowships are awarded by competition each year. Applicants for the Fellowship will be established scholars in social science with a track record in a field of social research methodology. They will normally hold, or recently have held, an established academic appointment in social science. The Fellowship committee regrets that it cannot consider applications from candidates seeking training or the updating of methodological skills. The VIF is intended for established scholars who are normally at least 5 years post doctorate. The awards are open to those who would value the opportunity to advance methodological understanding, for example by reflecting on methods used in previous empirical research, by validating existing or new methodological procedures, or by reviewing and synthesising methodological approaches. 'Methods' may be interpreted widely, to include, for example, statistical techniques and conversation and discourse analysis. Proposals for collaborative research with members of the Department of Sociology are especially welcome. Applications from female and ethnic minority candidates are particularly encouraged. An award of £2,500 will be made as a contribution towards travel and subsistence expenses incurred in holding the Fellowship. It is expected that VIF award-holders will normally be on paid leave of absence from their employment. Award-holders should be prepared to visit the Department on one or two occasions during the academic year with a duration of about one month in total. VIFs will become honorary Research Fellows of the University of Surrey and be entitled to use the University Library and make use of University facilities. The holder of a Fellowship is usually permanently resident outside the United Kingdom. The Department of Sociology at Surrey is a centre of methodological expertise and specialises in research methods for the application of social research to contemporary society. It promotes high methodological standards and new developments in methodology for the social science research community. Specialists in communication play an important, albeit often hidden, role in these processes. Translators and other international professional communicators operate as mediators to facilitate understanding across global, international, national and local contexts through diverse communication channels. Translating today often involves several agents with different roles, responsibilities and skills. This entails creative work, various innovative procedures, and collaborative networks in highly technological, distributed environments. All these agents can be seen as text producers with an increasing expertise in the tools and skills of their trades to find, manage, process, and adapt information to target audiences. Despite disperse attempts at acknowledging the importance of approaching professional communication as translation or as involving translation-related skills (e.g., Hoft 1995; Weiss 1995, 1997; Melton 2008), translation often remains invisible both in the literature and in the training of (international) professional communicators. The extant literature in Communication Studies that actually addresses translation usually tends to emphasize, and concentrate on, localization issues, and it often draws from functional approaches to translation as production of a communicative message or instrument (e.g., Vermeer 1996; Nord 1997; Reiss 2000). In Translation Studies, on the other hand, there is an increasing awareness of the need to tend bridges to Communication Studies in research (e.g., Risku 2010; Ehrensberger-Dow & Daniel 2013). However, more dialogue seems necessary to fully grasp the implications and commonalities in all areas of multilingual professional communication, not the least that they are usually ascribed peripheral roles in business, technical, and scientific endeavors. The emerging figure of the multitasked professional communicator has brought translation as part of the document production process to a different level of discussion. It is drawing increasing attention to translators’ profiles and training as competent communicators and vice versa, thus showing that the role translation plays in international professional communication, and the role of international professional communication in translator training cannot be downplayed (Gnecchi et al., 2011). This issue of the *conne**x**ions *journal seeks to build bridges of cross-disciplinary understanding between international professional communication scholars and practitioners and translation scholars and practitioners. It aims to foster debate around the *role of translation as a special kind of international professional communication and also as an integral part of other (international) professional communication instances* . Whether designed purely to entertain or to also achieve more "serious" purposes, games have the potential to impact players' beliefs, knowledge, attitudes, emotions, cognitive abilities, physical and mental health, and behavior. The faculty member hired for this position is expected to engage in scholarship aimed at understanding and transforming games in meaningful and impactful ways. Candidates will join an enthusiastic, multidisciplinary faculty and a program in game design and development that was rated #10 in the nation by Princeton Review in 2013.
