The deadline for registering is October 7. Student volunteers are essential to the success of the CSCW conference. While the volunteer duties are not always glamorous, they do provide a unique opportunity to interact closely with CSCW contributors, attendees, and other student volunteers. Volunteering provides a structured, cordial environment for students in various stages of their research career to become part of the CSCW community. Students often report that the 'social networks' they build from these meetings are the greatest benefit of being a volunteer. Indeed, it is not uncommon for future collaborations, internships/jobs, and friendships to be made through the SV experience. Qualifications: Volunteers must be undergraduate, Master's, or Ph.D. students during the 2013-2014 academic year. Students of all backgrounds, regardless of discipline, are encouraged to apply. You do not need to have a paper accepted to participate, but you will be responsible for funding your travel to and from the conference. No previous student volunteer experience is required, but we are looking for enthusiastic and reliable people. Good people, Thanks to everyone who suggested readings on uncompensated (or alienated) labor on the Internet. As promised, here is a (quick, sloppy) compilation of the suggestions I received. Add the contact details of reviewers to published, peer-reviewed papers

Dear colleagues, I get regulary invited to review papers. I like reviewing papers, good written papers enlarge my expertise (and even "bad" ones almost ever have stgh. to offer) I take reviews serious, even when I decide to reject a submission. Good comments addressing scientific rigor, reasoning and style, can be a tremendous help to improve a paper for a later submission. At the same time I hope to get meaningful reviews for papers I am co-authoring. Our department is running a scientific journal. Submission are reviewed by ~5 reviewers and we regularly receive reviews which vary quality-wise in broad ranges, from thoroughly carried out to a mere "good written". Some of them might be unacceptable (thus ~5reviews per submission). Sure, it is our liability to carefully select reviewers. And most of the time reviews are voluntary carried out in spare time. However, apart from these arguments justifying hasty reviews, what strikes me is the fact that the reviewers identities are kept in secrecy. Bachelor, master & PhD-thesis all carry the supervisor in bold letters. Peer-reviewed papers (or journals) for which the gentle reader might have to pay prices up into the hundreds of <your currency> though keep the reviewers, which are rampart to keep quality, in clandestine. I don't know where this habit comes from, but it must be somewhere deeply enshrined, as I am not aware of a style manual which describes where to put and how to format reviewer contact details of papers (though there might be such). Knowing the reviewers of papers, both the authors as well as the reader, has a couple of advantages: * The reviewer is more obliged to deliver qualitative work as the paper is under public scrutiny in respect to her / his effort put into reviewing the paper. * The reviewer is especially obliged to the authors as her / his verdict will have to be carefully justified. * These forces will increase the quality of a papers. * It will encourage scientific discourse Though there are also possible disadvantages: * There might be less papers published as reviews will be carried out with increased rigor and reviewers more tending to reject than to approve to avoid qualitative discussions afterwards. I for one will start to discuss this topic with our journal editors and gather their opinions. This is a general topic and should this be inappropriate for this mailing list I apologize and will put it on a blog. *3D printing: social and cultural trajectories* A one-day symposium organised by the Swinburne Institute for Social Research Thursday 5 December 2013 Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn campus Melbourne, Australia The increasingly accessible technology of 3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is the focus of this interdisciplinary event. In recent years, inexpensive printers have allowed users to fabricate items that would otherwise be conventionally produced in specialised, remote factories.With this capability comes a range of questions for social and cultural analysis: How are people using 3D printing technology? What legal and policy frameworks shape its development? How are its capabilities differently imagined by consumers, regulators, experts and enthusiasts? What kinds of markets and practitioner communities are forming around the technology? The symposium aims to open up an exploratory conversation around these and other issues, connecting researchers from across the humanities, social sciences and design. We invite proposals for short papers and panel discussions. M4D 2014 - Mobile Communication for development 2nd Call for Papera

This might be of interest to members of the AoIR list Apologies for cross posting Welcome to M4D2014 The 4th International Conference on Mobile Communication for Development (M4D) Dakar, Senegal, 8-9 April 2014 University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) in co-operation with HumanIT, Karlstad University 2nd call M4D2014 We are happy to announce two exiting keynotes at the M4D2014 conference. Professor Laura Stark from University of Jyväskylä in Finland who will talk about ethnographic approaches to mobile use among the very poor. Our second keynote is Anne Shongwe, founder and CEO of Afroes Transformational Multi-Media & Consulting. Anne has worked with several governments across Africa and South-East Asia as well as with UN, Bill and Melinda Gates foundations and the Nelson Mandela Childrens fund to mention a few. We are also happy to announce that we are going to organize workshop for PhD students attending the conference with among others the two keynotes, Jonathan Donner from Microsoft Research and Rich Ling from IT University Copenhagen and Telenor research. A separate call will follow this autumn. M4D2014 aims to provide a forum for researchers, practitioners and all those with interests in the use, evaluation, and theorizing of Mobile Communication for Development. M4D2014 will combine two days of plenary parallel paper sessions, panel sessions, short presentations, posters and workshops. This conference is the fourth in the M4D biennial series following the inaugural conference in Karlstad, Sweden in 2008. The 2nd conference was in Kampala, Uganda in 2010 and the 3rd in New Delhi, India in 2012. How to Participate? M4D2014 welcomes participants from academia, industry, NGOs, development agencies, and governmental and international organizations. If you want to submit a paper, there are two different options. Research papers (8-12 pages including references) will be peer reviewed and evaluated based on theory craftsmanship and analytical rigor. Articles considering critical approaches and theoretical development will be prioritized. The practitioner’s track is open to practitioners to present their experiences, cases and policies (4-5 pages). These contributions do not have to be guided by academic theory and critical analysis. All accepted papers will be published in the proceedings and allocated a presentation slot. Presenting with Posters, in Short Track or Parallel Sessions? Accepted papers with best reviews will be will be allocated longer presentation slots in parallel sessions. The other accepted papers will be allocated shorter presentation slots in short track session that will be followed by poster sessions. Accepted paper presenters should thus be prepared to bring posters with them. Poster size max. 80x120 cm. Roll-ups are also allowed. You can also participate by organizing a workshop. Workshops submissions for proceedings (2 pages) must contain: title, organizers with affiliation, participants, motivation and objectives. Finally, there is also the possibility to only submit a poster or a demo (1-page extended abstract).
