Dear AoIRists, I'm very pleased to call your attention to an upcoming PhD workshop on "Researching the relational / sociable self: Methods, Privacy, Ethics" - to be held at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, November 27-28, 2013. Please distribute this call to appropriate lists and potentially interested PhD students. We invite doctoral students from a range of disciplines – including media and communication studies, information science, sociology, philosophy, and political science – to participate in this interdisciplinary PhD course. Faculty presenters / mentors include: Charles Ess (Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo); Hallvard Fossheim (Director of the Norwegian National Committee for Research Ethics in the Social Sciences and the Humanities (NESH) and Professor II, University of Trømso, Norway); Stine Lomborg (Department of Media, Cognition and Communication, University of Copenhagen, Denmark); Annette Markham (Department of Aesthetics and Communication, Aarhus University, Denmark); Espen Ytreberg (Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo) *Background: *Especially over the last decade or so, both social science and humanistic research have emphasized the emergence of “the relational self,” as fostered by Internet-facilitated modes and venues of communication – most especially social media. Understanding how far our conceptions of selfhood may be changing in Western societies – broadly, from more individual to more relational, and, perhaps, from more rational to more emotive – is critical, especially as these changes seem further tied to - changing circumstances of socialization and togetherness in everyday life, and interweaving of different networks of affiliation that is associated with networked media for personal communication (cf. Rainie & Wellman, 2012); - changing methodologies and approaches to research designed to better tease out and explore the multiple dimensions of relationality; - changing sensibilities and expectations regarding privacy and notions of *privatlivet* ["private life"] and the (proper) boundaries of our * intimsfære* (intimate sphere) (cf. 2nd CFP: CSCW 2014 Doctoral Colloquium

***Please forward to Ph.D. students at your institution*** The Doctoral Colloquium is a forum in which Ph.D. students meet and discuss their work with each other and a panel of experienced CSCW researchers and practitioners. The colloquium itself will begin with dinner Saturday night February 15, 2014 and continue all day Sunday February 16, 2014. All submissions must be received by the chairs by 5:00pm (17:00) Pacific Time on October 7, 2013. Submissions received after this date will not be considered. All submissions will be acknowledged by email. We welcome applicants from a broad range of disciplines and approaches that inform CSCW, including anthropology, sociology, computer science, cognitive science, organizational studies, and related fields. We are particularly interested in applications from institutions and groups that have not traditionally been well-represented at past CSCW conferences. Applicants should be Ph.D. students with an already well-established direction of research relevant to CSCW, but whose research would benefit from guidance provided by peers and senior colleagues at the Doctoral Colloquium. Preference will be given to students who have a defined topic and program of work e.g., who have proposed their topics and are within 2 years of graduation within a 5 year program or are half way through a 3 (or 4) year program. The Colloquium committee will select approximately 15 participants who will be expected to give short, informal presentations of their work during the Colloquium, to be followed by extensive group discussion. Participants will also present their research in an interactive poster session during the main technical program of the conference. IMPORTANT DATES * October 07, 5:00pm PDT, 2013: Submission due * November 07: Final notifications CSCW brings together top researchers and practitioners from academia and industry who are interested in both the technical and social aspects of collaboration. The development and application of new technologies continues to enable new ways of working together and coordinating activities. Cooperation and coordination take place in different settings, ranging from work to recreational and social activities. Moreover, an increasing range of devices are involved in cooperation, as we collaborate in different contexts and situations. The conference has several venues for participation: INTERACTIVE POSTERS: CSCW 2014 will include an interactive poster category for late-breaking and preliminary results, smaller results not suitable for a full or short paper, innovative ideas not yet validated through user studies, early student research, and other research best presented in an interactive forum. Posters will be presented in a special Poster Session where researchers will interact directly with conference attendees. The posters will then remain up throughout the remainder of the conference. The peer-reviewed demonstrations allow conference participants to view novel and noteworthy CSCW systems in action, discuss the systems with those who created them, and try them out. Appropriate demonstrations include applications, technologies, and research prototypes, and may showcase work that has been or is being published at CSCW or elsewhere. Demonstrations can also serve to showcase novel commercial products not previously described in the research literature. Demonstrations should be interactive and provide attendees a hands-on experience. The demo forum is not an opportunity for marketing or sales presentations. Presenters must have been directly involved with the development of the system and be able to explain the unique and novel contributions of the system. Demo submission categories: At CSCW 2014, the primary type of demo is the Reception Demo. Reception Demos will be showcased during a special demo reception. These demonstrations will be spaced around a large room, and will run concurrently during the block of time set aside for demonstrations. Attendees will be free to explore the room and visit demos of interest. This promotes informal interaction and in-depth information exchange among demo presenters and attendees. A demo presentation should be brief so that it can be shown repeatedly to many attendees. Demonstrators may also propose an Integrated Demo. Integrated Demos will run throughout the conference, and should enhance the conference experience for attendees. Because integrated demos can directly affect participants' conference experience, they will be held to a higher standard of quality and robustness than reception demos. Examples of integrated demos might be systems that enable social networking, or that enable collaborative reflection on conference presentations. Demo submissions consist of two components: (1) a two-page extended abstract in the Extended Abstracts format, and (2) a demo system summary that describes the logistics of the demonstration. We also highly encourage authors to also include (3) a video of the system in action, particularly if it helps illustrate the proposed demonstration (at most 2 minutes long). With panels we want to provide a forum for discussing provocative, controversial, innovative, emerging, boundary-spanning and boundary-breaking issues. While paper sessions provide detailed discussions of work recently completed, panels provide an opportunity to explore what is on the horizon - or what is already here but not adequately recognized, acknowledged or discussed. Self-nominations are welcome. The appointment is for four years and begins in Summer 2014. JoC is a general forum for communication scholarship and publishes articles and book reviews examining a broad range of issues in communication theory and research. It publishes the best available scholarship on all aspects of communication, and all methods of scholarly inquiry into communication are welcome. A completed nomination package includes a letter of application from the candidate which should include a mission statement for the editorship; the candidate's vitae; 2-3 letters of support from published scholars familiar with the candidate's work, experience and suitability for the task of journal editing; and a letter of institutional support from the candidate's home institution. Apologies for multiple posts/cross posting. It was brought to my attention that the previous post neglected to mention that the 2014 PCA/ACA National Conference is in Chicago and from April 16 - 19. The deadline for proposals is November 1. For individual paper proposal submissions, please submit a 250-word (maximum) abstract. Submissions must be made online at http://ncp.pcaaca.org . For panel submissions, please submit a 250-word (maximum) panel abstract, as well as 100-word abstracts for each individual presentation. Panel proposals must be emailed to digitalgames.pcaaca(a)gmail.com. Be sure to include the proposed title of the panel, the organizer’s name, affiliation, mailing address, and email, as well as this information for all panelists. Panel submissions may take the form of debates, dialogs, roundtable discussions, thematic panels, (or other format) and should be designed to last approximately eighty minutes.
