My dissertation is also CC licensed (also following danah's how-do, thanks danah), and I embargoed it from ProQuest because I wanted to put it up on my own website, where it is still freely available. Not only did this NOT hurt me getting a book deal, but I put in my book proposal that the diss. had been downloaded 3,000 times, which helped convince prospective publishers that there was a market for the book. My diss has also been cited a bit, which is great. Now that the book is coming out (November 26, makes a great Thanksgiving gift), I really don't want people reading the dissertation anymore because the book is SO much better. But it's still up there (although I think it's not linked from the front page of my website anymore, but mostly because I forgot the last time I updated the page, not for any great reason) because I don't like the idea of having a fiscal barrier to accessing my work. I did not CC the book, which is a whole other conversation. (Mark, I had my undergrads read parts of Leet Noobs, by the way- it sparked great conversations!) This uniquely situates mobile communication for an interdisciplinary pre-conference to address positive and negative impacts of mobile-mediated communication in society. Final Call for Proposals: JCAL Special Issue on Learning Analytics in Simulations, Games, Virtual Worlds, and MOOCs

Dear colleagues, Contributions are being solicited for a special issue of the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning (JCAL) on 'Learning Analytics in Massively Multiuser Games, Virtual Environments and Courses'. The scope of the issue includes both massively multiplayer online games (e.g. World of Warcraft) and virtual worlds (e.g. Second Life) as well as massive open online courses (MOOCs), whether they be 'xMOOCs' delivered via one of the major MOOC platforms (Udacity, Coursera, edX) or connectivist-style 'cMOOCs' offered independently of those platforms. The Call for Papers is available at http://goo.gl/2STf3V . Importantly, while the special issue is intended to be about the use of learning analytics with very large numbers (hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands) of students, scholars who have conducted or are conducting studies with slightly smaller student numbers should not be discouraged from submitting proposals – particularly if they are able to show proof of concept for larger-scale applications. The editors are especially likely to consider studies on learning analytics in immersive simulations, games and virtual worlds involving fewer participants, since the use of such environments as part of massive courses remains in its infancy. However, it will be necessary for the author(s) to include a detailed discussion of how what is being reported or proposed might be scaled to accommodate a 'massive' situation. Proposals consisting of 500-word abstracts and 7-10 key references are due on 7 October 2013, and the deadline for submission of full manuscripts is 27 January 2014. This is a call for papers on Alternate Reality Games and the real world, by the journal *Digital Studies / Le champ numérique*. *Digital Studies / Le champ numérique* (ISSN 1918-3666) is a refereed academic journal serving as a formal arena for scholarly activity and as an academic resource for researchers in the digital humanities. DS/CN is published by the Société canadienne des humanités numériques (CSDH/SCHN)<http://www.csdh-schn.org/>, a partner in the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organisations (ADHO)<http://www.digitalhumanities.org/>. DS/CN was founded for CSDH/SCHN at the Electronic Textual Cultures Lab, University of Victoria, in 2008 by Ray Siemens and Christian Vandendorpe. It is the nature of ARGs that they place players in real world settings, working to find clues or solves puzzles. But the fictional scenarios envisioned for ARGs are not easy to contain, and the boundary between fictional and real spaces is constantly in tension. How, then, are we to reconcile these two realms while still maintaining a fictional scenario for players to engage in and with? What are the ethical implications of ARGs in the real world? Furthermore, what role does censorship and safety play in the designing and implementing of these games? We invite submissions of papers interrogating these issues, or any other similar issue pertaining to ARGs and their existence within public and private spaces. The school is interactive in character, and is composed of keynote lectures and seminars, tutorials and workshops with student presentations. The idea is to encourage participants to build up collegial relationships. The KACA paper session has a tradition of presenting state-of-art communication research endeavors relating to Korean-related communication themes including but not limited to the following areas: intercultural- or cross-cultural studies; communication and new technologies; advertising, PR, campaigns; journalism; political communication; science, health, environment, and risk communication; circulation of Korean cultural products in the world. In addition, we also welcome studies reflecting the conference theme of Communication and the “Good Life” in the context of Korean society. Those who are interested in presenting at the KACA paper session should submit a completed paper reporting on new research. Completed papers are limited to 25 pages in length (double-spaced excluding references and tables, with 12-point size and 1 inch margins). A brief abstract (less than 200 words) is required. Three anonymous reviewers will evaluate submitted manuscripts in terms of quality of theory development, quality of the methods employed, and significance of the findings.
