Digital Humanities scholars attending IR#16

Greetings, I am reaching out to those attending this year’s IR#16 conference that work in the area of digital humanities. One of the projects I am working on looks at how groups of scientists collaborate at a distance on a project. We would like to have the perspective and experience of digital humanists in our sample. If you are a digital humanist working on a research project that includes collaborators that are distributed, I would like to hear about it. Your participation would involve an interview lasting approximately an hour, and an online survey that can be filled out at your convenience. The survey asks details about one of your collaborations and what tools, software, and devices are essential to your scholarship. If you are interested, please consider emailing me off list. Update & Deadline Extended: CFP for Gender and Games Trilogy

The due date for the submission of abstracts for this trilogy of books exploring the gendered practices enacted in relation to games and gaming technologies has been extended to October 25. Some aspects of the CFP have been updated to clarify the intended aims and orientation of the project and potential contributors may also care to note the expanded configuration of the editorial team for each volume. We are seeking chapter contributors for a “trilogy” of edited volumes that collect and curate previously unpublished scholarship looking at gender, sexuality and games. We envision three volumes that bring together: - women’s studies and game studies to focus on feminist criticism of women's experiences with games, gaming and game cultures - queer studies and game studies to focus on queer and genderqueer experiences with games, gaming and game cultures - masculinity studies and game studies to focus on men's experiences with games, gaming and game cultures. Acknowledging that gaming acts as a key – and heavily contested -- site of subject formation in the lives of those who play, we are soliciting explorations of the gendered practices enacted in relation to games and gaming technologies. In doing so, we hope to provide a comprehensive (though by no means exhaustive) account of the increasingly significant roles gaming plays in the reproduction, and possible subversion, of contemporary regimes of gender-based power. We are seeking chapter contributors for a "trilogy" of edited volumes that collect and curate previously unpublished scholarship looking at gender and games. We envision three volumes: one each on femininity, masculinity and genderqueer identities, respectively. In particular, we are concerned with theoretically-grounded explorations of the following: - the relationships -- identification, idealization, appropriation, negotiation, rejection, contestation, etc -- between representations/performances of gender in games and their uptake in gaming practices and cultures; - the gendered dynamics and communicative practices of cultures coalescing around particular games and gaming pursuits; - the historical and/or contemporary processes by which gaming technologies (platforms, peripherals, software, etc) become (dis)associated with particular subject positions; - gendered patterns of privilege and inequity that characterize gaming-related labor, including (but not limited to) game production, modding, e-sports, and spectatorship; - the persistent and limiting dichotomization of gender in gaming-related texts, discourses and practices; - the intersections of gender and other systems of oppression, such as race, sexuality, ability, age, and socio-economic status, with regards to any of these above facets. Contributions from all academic disciplines and geographic regions are invited, and emerging and unaffiliated scholars are encouraged as the trilogy aims to bring different voices and perspectives into conversation. However, the audience of the work is academic and scholarly style and rigor are expected. To that end, all chapters will undergo peer review and willingness to accept criticism and undertake revisions is necessary. Also note that we can ensure double blind peer-review of your chapter if requested, but, we also ask that each chapter contributor be willing to peer-review one other chapter submitted to the trilogy to help expedite this. For consideration, please email an abstract of 250 - 500 words and a short bio statement of no more than 100 words to the editors at ( gender.games.trilogy(a)gmail.com) no later than October 15. The abstract should provide a clear summary of the proposed chapter’s thesis and outline of its structure. Indicate which volume of the trilogy you are submitting to in the subject line of your email. Complete chapter drafts will be due February 1, 2016 and should be no more than 6000 words (including notes and references) and use the Chicago Manual of Style author-date sytem (http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html) for references. This position is an ideal opportunity for a scholar whose work draws on anthropology, communication, media studies, sociology, and/or science and technology studies to bring empirical and critical perspectives to complex socio-technical issues. Dear all, many of you have, at some point, ordered an INC publication or downloaded pdfs and epub from site or read our publications online. We would love it if you do something back and fill out our survey, which ultimately aims to improve our (online) publication services. Best, Geert — Hello, The Institute of Network Cultures has been producing various kinds of publications for years, which are all available online on http://networkcultures.org/publications/ and http://www.publishinglab.nl/publications/. We are approaching you because you have received INC publications in the past. In order to improve the browsability and the readability of the publications, two interns, Josip Batinic (MA New Media and Digital Culture, UvA, Netherlands) and Léna Robin (MA Graphic Design, Haute École des Arts du Rhin, France) are currently working on a new proposal for the website. To do so in the best way possible, they have put together a survey regarding reading habits and browsing preferences, in order to have a good overview of the situation (see link below). *Toward a geographical software studies*A series of sessions for the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers <http://www.aag.org/annualmeeting> in San Francisco, March 29-April 2, 2016 Ryan Burns <http://burnsr77.github.io/> (Temple University) Nick Lally <http://www.nicklally.com/> (University of Wisconsin–Madison) A growing body of recent geographic scholarship has focused its attention on software and algorithms. Some of these studies analyze geographic technologies —GIS and the geoweb, for example— as such, while others investigate a myriad of digital technologies that have become ubiquitous within the spaces of everyday life. These software/code objects interact with and modulate the world in complex ways, enact processes that connect humans and nonhumans, and become entangled with social, cultural, political, and economic systems. Moreover, software created to visualize data is used to produce knowledge about urban environments and everyday life, but obscure the processes and contexts which underlie its development. Engaging these topics, geographers have developed concepts like the “automatic production of space” (Thrift and French 2002), “software-sorted geographies” (Graham 2005), and “code/space” (Kitchin and Dodge 2011) to describe how software and space are co-constituted in the contemporary world. Productive research is building on these topics to explore new ways geographies are produced (Rose, Degen, and Melhuish 2014), governed (Amoore 2011), materialized, represented (Woodward et al. 2015), and lived through software (Kinsley 2014). This session seeks to bring together a range of spatial thinkers who are producing new studies, theories, and methods for understanding and producing software. We welcome submissions that address all facets of software: the context of its production, its internal operational logics, the material work it does in the world, and its spatial distribution of social and political effects. Suggested themes could include: • Radical, feminist, or postcolonial political theories of software, software production, and/or hacking. What are the liberatory potentials/limits of coding or software and its critiques? • The political economy of software, code, attentional economies, and the audience as commodity. • Methodological contributions for the study of software (deconstruction, ethnography, reading code, reverse-engineering, archival research, hacking, writing software, visual studies, understanding processes, online research, etc) • Software and visual and affective epistemology. • The materiality of software and the work it does in the world (the production of space, embodiment, urbanization, social sorting, securitization, infrastructure, etc).
