Dear colleagues - I’m writing because we’re looking for an adjunct for spring 2016 to teach 2 sections of a course called “Computers & Society.” The course topics and readings can be quite flexible, but usually consist of some computer history, ICT policy debates, computer and media culture, and ethical and societal aspects of the computing professions. If you or someone you know in the NYC area might be willing to teach this class in Spring 2016, or would like more details, please let me know (arussell(a)stevens.edu<mailto:arussell@stevens.edu>). Both sections are already scheduled. One section runs on Wednesdays from 9-11:30 am, and the other on Thursdays from 3:30-6 pm. Both are capped at 24 students. This project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC), by way of a Consolidator Grant awarded to the principal investigator (PI) Prof. dr. Sandra Ponzanesi (Professor of Gender and Postcolonial Studies, Utrecht University, the Netherlands) and will be running at Utrecht University, the Netherlands from 2016-2021. 3 PhD positions 'Digital Crossings in Europe. Gender, Diaspora and Belonging'(1,0 fte each) Postdoc 'Digital Crossings in Europe. Gender, Diaspora and Belonging' (0,8 FTE) The project aims to investigate the relation between migration and digital technologies, in particular the way in which the ‘connected migrant’ contributes to new forms of European integration and cosmopolitan citizenship. The project explores digital diasporas in relation to issues of gender, ethnicity and affective belonging, focusing on how new technologies enhance new forms of connectivity between the homeland and destination countries, bus also across diasporas. The project pioneers a new interdisciplinary method that combines media studies, postcolonial theories, digital humanities and gender studies, drawing from the humanities and social science. It proposes a comparative approach, based on qualitative digital methods, that focuses on Somali, Romanian and Turkish women migrants who have settled in some of Europe’s main cities (London – PhD1, Amsterdam – PhD2 and Rome – PhD3) and the way in which they keep digitally and emotionally connected to their homeland cities (Mogadishu, Bucharest, Istanbul – Postdoc). The project will chart how different forms of migration (labour, postcolonial and post socialist) impact on the new European order at the local and transnational levels. Within the project, three PhD positions and a postdoc position (advertised separately) will be available for the following projects: 1. PhD1 - Digital Diasporas: London. 2. PhD2 - Digital Diasporas: Amsterdam. 3. PhD3 - Digital Diasporas: Rome. 4. Postdoc: The Politics of Home The three PhDs will have to conduct fieldwork across the three migrant groups (Turkish, Somali, Romanian) in the proposed city (London, Amsterdam or Rome). The interaction, collaboration and sharing of data with the other PhDs and the postdoc is expected. Twitter Hours

Good Morning (Afternoon/Evening) All, I'm currently undertaking research into Orkney's folklore and its relationship with personal and community identities related to the Orkney. I'm also interested in the growing field of digital folklore, and much of my data relates to social media networks and online interaction. I have therefore decided to host a series of four Twitter Hours, specifically associated with my research, to discuss the case studies with which I am currently working, with the intention of using this data in my thesis. I'm finalising my approach at present, and hope to host the first Hour in January. If anyone has any reading suggestions for relevant articles etc related to studies which have used this or a similar method, that would be much appreciated. Two postdoc positions at the Oxford Internet Institute

Hi all, I'm looking for two great postdocs to join me for at least 3.5 years to study how ICTs are being used to transform the labour market, through online labour marketplaces, ride hailing apps, and similar digital platforms: http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/newpositions/#p53 I'm especially looking for social scientists with qualitative research skills and theoretical backgrounds relevant to examining the social construction/shaping of markets, technologies, and labour movements. Using selected platforms as cases, they will study online labour markets' formal and informal rules, how these rules are made and how they influence participants, and how participants are attempting to influence the rules in this digital economy of private and algorithmic regulation. The postdocs will work together with me and Dr Otto Kässi, a labour economist/data scientist who will be heading the project's quantitative aspects. I think these are really quite exciting positions in that they are situated in a fantastic department at the University of Oxford and deal with theoretically interesting and extremely policy-relevant topics. Candidates must have or be near the completion of a PhD in information systems, informatics, computing, or a related field. Preferences will be given to those who specialize in health informatics and/or smart health, but outstanding candidates in other big data application areas will also be considered. Desirable candidates are those with a proven track record in using: pattern recognition, data/text mining, knowledge representation, decision support, and machine learning for integration, analysis, visualization, and stream processing of extra-large scale data from disparate sources and/or in heterogeneous formats, to solving healthcare problems. Areas of particular interest include intelligent information systems for clinical/translational researchers and secondary use of EHR data for research, clinical care, operations, accountable care, precision diagnostics and medicine, the learning healthcare system, as well as informatics methods for healthcare knowledge discovery to be used at any point of care. Thanks much, Best, Dave ----- Letter: October 26, 2015 An open letter to the United States Senate: We are professors who research and/or teach about cyberlaw and cybersecurity, and write to express our concerns about S. 754, the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (the “Act”). In April, more than 60 technologists and computer and network security professionals wrote to express their concerns with the Act; we attach a copy of that letter below and echo the concerns raised in that letter. While recent amendments to CISA have attempted to address the significant privacy and surveillance concerns raised by the aforementioned technologists and others, the fundamental problem inherent in CISA remains. In sum, it will do little, if anything, to address the very real problem of flawed cybersecurity while creating conditions ripe for abuse. Among other infirmities, it would: • Allow “voluntary” sharing of heretofore private information with the government, allowing secret and ad hoc privacy intrusions in place of meaningful consideration of the privacy concerns of all Americans. The Freedom of Information Act would be neutralized, while a cornucopia of federal agencies could have access to the public’s heretofore private-held information with little fear that such sharing would ever be known to those whose information was shared. • Allow companies to attack cybersecurity threats, without clear limitations on their power or scope. • Allow companies to do any and all of the above with little fear of facing legal consequences for poor judgment (or worse). Most significantly, it would do all of the above while doing little to address actual cybersecurity concerns. Rather than encouraging companies to increase their own cybersecurity standards, CISA ignores that goal and offloads responsibility to a generalized public-private secret information sharing network. CISA creates new law in the wrong places. For example, as the attached letter indicates, security threat information sharing is already quite robust. Instead, what are most needed are more robust and meaningful private efforts to prevent intrusions into networks and leaks out of them, and CISA does nothing to move us in that direction. In sum, this is a classic “let’s do something” law. While we laud Congress for taking notice of the significant cybersecurity threats facing US corporations, we fear that CISA will weaken privacy and encourage governmental surveillance, with little upside for the public.
