**Apologies for cross-postings*** Call for Papers (IEEE TLT) =========================================================================== IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, Special issue on Learning Analytics Guest editors: Dragan Gašević, Carolyn P. Rosé, and George Siemens *** Submission deadline: February 1, 2016 *** The availability of digital data affords unprecedented possibilities for analysis of different aspects of human life. These possibilities have mobilized researchers, practitioners, institutional leaders, policy makers, and technology vendors to look at the ways these data can be used to understand and enhance learning and teaching. This intensive interest has given rise to the formation of the new field of learning analytics. According to the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR: http://solaresearch.org/) learning analytics is defined as “the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs.” The field of learning analytics builds on and links to numerous other disciplines including learning sciences, social network analysis, (educational) data mining, language technologies, machine learning, information visualization, computational thinking and sense-making, (educational, social, cognitive, organizational) psychology, and educational theory. Early results in the field of learning analytics offer much promise in identification of learners at risk of failing or dropping out of a course, understanding of information flow in social interactions, or identification of different cognitive, metacognitive and affective states in discourse and other behavior traces. These results have attracted many institutions to invest in systemic implementation of learning analytics, development of relevant institutional policies, and creation of partnerships with organizations specializing in learning analytics. Data about user interactions with learning technologies are the main resources used in learning analytics. Given the early days in the development of the field of learning analytics, research is necessary to provide more effective methods in order to understand the factors that influence learning as well as to optimize learning outcomes and processes across cognitive, metacognitive, social, and affective dimensions. Moreover, there is a need for theoretically sound and empirically validated frameworks for: - presentation of results of learning analytics to a variety of stakeholders, including decision makers, administrators, instructors and students, - development of novel learning technologies offering effective ways for personalization support and continuous improvement, - systemic institution-wide deployment and implementation of learning analytics, and - ethical and safe use of data and learning analytics that protects user privacy while maximizing wellbeing. This special issue of IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies calls for papers that address the above gaps by reporting on a combination of theoretical/conceptual and empirically validated findings. The accepted papers will contribute to the existing body of research knowledge in the field of learning analytics and will offer a sound empirical base that can motivate and inform practice. The submissions that build bridges of learning analytics with other related disciplines to enhance the impact are especially welcome. Update: Getting Around Phoenix for #ir16

Hi, All, A couple of you have requested information about how to get around Phoenix without a car. I am a relatively recent transplant from New York City, and so I remain both in culture shock regarding the lack of public transportation, and also not well versed in it. There are walkable areas of the Valley, to be sure, but not a huge number of options for connecting between these. Certainly, once you are in downtown Phoenix, Tempe, or Scottsdale, there is enough density to make walking both viable and pleasant. As noted in an earlier email, Scottsdale has a free Trolley service that covers much of the tourist area: http://www.experiencescottsdale.com/plan-your-trip/transportation/the-scott… . Interurban transportation is another story and the Valley is pretty sprawled As a side note, like most American cities, Phoenix had a pretty decent trolley system through the 1940s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Street_Railway . The residents recently voted in favor of a $31 billion initiative to improve public transportation, but that will do little to help us this week. There is a 23 mile light-rail line that runs from Tempe, past Sky Harbor, through to central Phoenix. It costs $2 a ride. It's great if you need to get from Downtown to the airport or the ASU Tempe campus. Unfortunately, many of the places you want to be aren't reached by the Metro yet, and the nearest Metro stop to the hotel is a 17 minute bus ride (or hour walk) away. The Valley Metro busses (http://www.valleymetro.org/) are also $2 a ride (or $6 for a full day pass purchased on board). Exact change is needed. The easiest way to plan a ride is via Google Maps' trip planner. Another option is biking, though it can be tough outside of the denser areas. There is a (newish) bike sharing system, but its website-- http://gridbikes.com -- is down :(. In any case, the bike stations are mainly downtown and in central Phoenix. The is a bike shop a couple miles from the hotel (http://bikebarnaz.com/) that does daily rentals, as well. As it stands, a car remains the best way to get around. Taxis generally need to be called ahead (outside of downtown there are not taxi stands), or, of course, there is Uber/Lyft. Or you can rent a car (there are links to a coupon code on the http://ir16.aoir.org site, or Silvercar at the airport: http://silvercar.com) But all else being equal, I would rent a Harley: http://www.eaglerider.com/ . seeing northern Arizona beyond IR-16

Although I won't be going to IR16, I've just returned from vacationing in northern Arizona, and I strongly reccomend you do the same after the conference. Here are my recommends: 1. Grand Canyon, of course. But more than just the wonderful sights from the Rim, walk down the Kaibab Trail to Oh-Ah Point (at least) or 2x as far to Cedar Ridge. Kaibab preferable to Bright Angel Trail, because less mule residue. Take trail early to avoid sun/heat near midday, 7 or 8AM start using the Hiker Express bus. We walked to Cedar Ridge in 2 hours, and back up in 3. And we're in early 70s. Don't stay at over-priced El Tovar Hotel. 2. Then drive 3 hours NE to Monument Valley, home of John Ford/Wayne scenicly great "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" etc/ (Politically incorrect, though.) Stay at Gouldings Lodge and take Jeep tour. Experience Navaho culture. Less pressure of tourists than Grand Canyon 3. Then drive 1.5 hrs to Chinle/Canyon de Chelly, and take another jeep tour with Navaho guide. Beautiful, & almost devoid of tourists. Stay at Best Western. 4. On drive back next day, lunch in Globo at Sweethearts Cafe. Great food & service. WEBCAST TODAY: CITI Who Owns the World’s Media?

The conference will discuss the findings and implications of a 5 and a half year CITI-led study on international media concentration. This project brought together author teams from 30 countries examining 13 media industries in the platform, distribution, and content sectors. The result is a book published by Oxford University Press <http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199987238.do>, to be unveiled at the conference. The book is 1300 pages in length and includes 800 figures and tables. It aims to provide a serious data analysis of questions of media concentration trends, their drivers, the impact of technology, and variations across countries and industries. Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Communication or a related field by August 31, 2016. Successful candidates must demonstrate a record of excellence in social science research in public relations/advertising, and should demonstrate a record of, or strong potential for securing extramural funding. It would be beneficial for these interests to intersect with our current strengths in media, interpersonal, health, political, or intercultural communication. The instructional requirements for the position include developing and teaching an array of undergraduate courses, including courses in the candidate’s specialty, as well as conventional communication courses. In addition to advising undergraduate students in the major, this hire will be expected to teach two courses per semester. Additional opportunities exist for summer and January session courses. An interest in professional and institutional service is required, and professional experience in the communication industry could also be a plus. Twitter hashtags used without searching in mind

Hi everybody, Has anyone come across any research looking at when hashtags are used on Twitter, apparently without having searchability in mind? I'm thinking about when users employ hashtags (or create new ones) to be used in just a single tweet for rhetorical purposes and with no expectation that they will be searched for or that they will link in to a broader debate via the hashtag. For example, the hashtag #toldyouso is used fairly often but it seems unlikely that users employing it have much expectation that other users will search for that hashtag for information about it. Rather, the focus seems to be on the rhetorical impact of the individual tweet in which it is used. Any thoughts or recommendations for reading would be much appreciated! Best, Neil
