Considering both retrospective memories and the prospective employment of memories, Memory in a Mediated World examines troubled times that demand resolution, recovery and restoration. The chapters assembled in this volume provide empirically grounded analyses of how media are employed by individuals and social groups to connect the past, the present and the future. The volume argues that experiences of private or public crisis often allow for a projective use of memories, be they individual or collective. Hence, contrary to the idea that such states of exception eliminate memories, the volume examines the ways in which memories in and of traumatic, conflictual or incisive events and experiences are addressed through a productive employment of past experiences, ideas, relationships or strategies. Dear all, We would like to cordially invite you to attend the Center for Culture-Centered Approach to Research and Evaluation (CARE)’s conference titled *“Communication for Social Change: Intersections of Theory and Praxis”*, from *6-8 January 2016* at the National University of Singapore. CARE is a research center under the Department of Communications and New Media at NUS (http://www.care-cca.com/) This conference brings together communication scholars, both experienced and new, to share, dialogue, debate, and discourse on the future of social change in the discipline. Rooted in the idea that theory is deeply intertwined with praxis in the field, our conference is also envisioned as a platform to build solidarity among people working within the academic-activist spectrum. Featuring a mix of informative plenary sessions and paper presentations by faculty and graduate students from all around the world, the conference will be most beneficial for faculty and students that are interested in social change, activism, health communication, and postcolonial studies, from a communicative angle. Sorry for crossposting! **** CALL FOR PAPERS Following User Pathways: Cross Platform and Mixed Methods Analysis in Social Media Studies In conjunction with CHI'16: ACM Human Factors in Computing Systems San Jose, California, 7-12 May Mission Statement This workshop aims to consolidate diverse research practices and methodologies of social media analysis into a more structured and unified vision for user experience, HCI research, and an overarching understanding and observation point of digital studies. Under-addressed by researchers (though not digital advertisers or data mining processes), 'Following User Pathways' promises a more complete concept of how to braid differing aspects together for the benefit as opposed to exploitation of social users, as well as to the benefit of (social) researchers. 'Following User Pathways' recognizes that only with a mixture of platforms can researchers really disentangle aspects of user experience, engagement and dependencies of and upon social platforms. Goals and Deliverables This workshop will bring together the diverse community of computational social science and web science researchers who work across platforms and with mixed methods. This is a foundational meeting for the establishment of a unified vision and structured approach for multi-modal and mixed method social media research. We specifically want to address the following points: 1. How can a complete social media path be mapped, and what does a complete representation look like? This overarching question looks for framing and conceptual modelling of complete use pathways. Especially the qualitative aspects of user motivation and needs, and the quantitative aspect of instantiation design are captured here. 2. Is the value of a complete path higher than the amount of personal data required to map it with respect to data privacy? 3. What are the ethical parameters of path mapping to avoid exploitative conduct? Necessary to note is that ethical data curation follows the Belmont Principles and/or the guidelines of the Association of Internet researchers [17]. The study design and curation must be reasonable, non-exploitative, and balance data extraction with benefit to society. These questions address the broad ethical issues in internet and cross-platform research. 4. What technical affordances need to be implemented to develop a single framework? Few instantiations exist that support cross-platform data extraction. Even fewer exist that support mixed-method analyses. This question looks for contributions on integrated and automated cross-platform and mixed-method analyses. 5. What challenges to holistic curation exist? It is expected that the observation lenses across platforms and with the differing methods capture differing structural, content, and temporal aspects. As such, the data must be reconciled to support a holistic analysis. Theoretical and empirical contributions addressing these challenges are envisioned with this question. The explicit deliverable is a Special Issue call in ACM Transactions on Internet Technology (TOIT). A secondary goal of the workshop is continuing the dialogue with a further event, to be co-located at either the 2016 ACM Conference on Social Networks (COSN) conference at Stanford, USA or the ASE Social Informatics series, location to be announced in the fall of 2015. Call for Participation Social media and the resulting tidal wave of available data have changed the ways and methods researchers analyze communities at scale. But the full potential for science is not yet achieved. Despite the popularity of social media analysis in the past decade, few researchers invest in cross-platform analyses due to various reasons, e.g. unknown methods and tools, supposed difficult analysis and others. "Following user pathways: Using cross platform and mixed methods analysis in social media studies" co-located with CHI 2016 brings together a community of researchers and professionals to address methodological, analytical, conceptual, and technological challenges and opportunities of mapping user across platforms with mixed method analysis in social media ecosystems. Concerns about the power of algorithmic curation to shape mediated experience without the user's knowledge or consent have produced a uniform industry response: a proliferation of new options and messages ("See first," "Hide," "Why am I seeing this?"). These labels and knobs are meant to bolster the idea that we individually control the social media curation algorithms that act on us. One problem with this premise is that it assumes user awareness and a particular conceptualization of algorithmic filtering in the first place. In this talk I will discuss a project that helped a diverse group of Facebook users compare a filtered vs. unfiltered Facebook news feed to elicit their "folk theories" of what they thought the news feed was doing. I discuss the range of elicited folk theories -- from "fresh blood" to "Narcissus" -- in order to investigate social media's contemporary co-production of mediation and relevance. Bio: Christian Sandvig<http://www-personal.umich.edu/~csandvig/> is Associate Professor in the School of Information and the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan. His current research investigates the consequences of algorithmic systems that curate and organize culture. He was named a "next-generation leader in science and technology policy" in a faculty competition organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He previously received a Faculty Career Development Award from the US National Science Foundation in the area of human-centered computing. He holds the Ph.D. in communication research from Stanford University. Geert Lovink, ‘Critical Internet Cultures from Selfie Cult to Mask Design’ Abstract: In this monopoly phase of platform capitalism, selfies and Anonymous are two sides of the same coin. Both emerge from the same root in Western enlightenment that emphasises individualism and liberation of the Self. Narcissistic self-promotion as well as politically motivated protection of privacy operate under the neo-liberal umbrella of individual empowerment. This raises the strategic question whether alternative network architectures arise out of a critical reading of such consumer cultures? What’s the state of the art in critical internet cultures in this post-Snowden era? What does it mean when the tactics of mainstreaming subcultural practices is running empty on the long run and the realtime meme politics is incapable of solidifying itself in alternative protocols and infrastructures? Bio: Geert Lovink<http://networkcultures.org/geert/biography/> is a media theorist, internet critic and author of Zero Comments (2007), Networks Without a Cause (2012) and Social Media Abyss (2016). Since 2004 he is researcher in the School for Communication and Media Design at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) where he is the coordinator of the Institute of Network Cultures. Recently his centre organized conferences, publications and research networks such as Unlike Us (alternatives in social media), Society of the Query (the culture of search), MoneyLab (bitcoins, crowdfunding & internet revenue models) and a project on publishing and future of art criticism. The Media and Cinema Studies program, along with the College of Computing and Digital Media, the English Department, and the Department of American Studies at DePaul University is hosting a one-day celebratory colloquium in honor the fiftieth anniversary of *Star Trek* on Saturday, May 07, from 9am-6pm. This event will feature roundtable discussions from scholars and fans of *Supernatural*, speaking about the cultural impact of the show, as well as analyzing aspects of the episodes. The even will also feature keynote speaker Brannon Braga (executive producer, writer, and director of multiple episodes and films), screenings, screenwriting workshops, a costume contest, and more. The audience for this event is both graduate and undergraduate students, both fans and scholars, and the focus should be on informed and enlightening discussion rather than formal academic papers. “A Celebration of *Star Trek*” will take place on DePaul’s Loop campus.
