Participations, The Journal for Audience and Reception Studies has published its latest issue online at http://www.participations.org This issue once again offers a rich variety of articles, including an innovative study into the role played by online participation into narrative spoilers, a discussion about new directions for methodologies in fan studies, as well as a themed section on “Media generations”. This themed section, which consists of nine different publications, discusses differences in generational usage of media from various perspectives. IR16 Update #8: Face the Music!

On Thursday, October 22, evening, we will be holding a Welcome Banquet, with a light meal at the Desert Botanical Gardens (http://www.dbg.org) a 140 acre collection of arid flora from around the world, started in the 1930s by a Swedish botanist (naturally). For your listening and dancing pleasure, we will be joined by Gertie & the Boyz, a celebrated Waila band. While many associate mariachi music with the broader Sonora area--and rightfully so--Waila represents some of the crossroads of the southwest. It is closely associated with the Tohono O'odham people and draws from a wide range of influences (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_scratch) If your ears are in the mood for more, there are a wide range of opportunities to get out of the conference hotel and listen or dance: 1. "The Book of Mormon" arrives in Phoenix on October 20 at Grady Gammage, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed theater on the ASU campus. Ticket sales open officially on August 3, but if you go to http://www.asugammage.com/ and use the code INSIDER (because, as AoIR members, what else could define you?) you can get access to the pre-sale. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the pre-sale has nearly sold out for the first week of the show, but there are some seats still available. 2. Maybe you would prefer an Imperial March? On October 25th, the day after the conference, the Phoenix Symphony is playing "Star Wars: The Music." If John Williams is a bit high-brow for you, the night before, they are doing "The Sound of Speed 2," a celebration of music that encourages high velocity, along with a presentation of collectors cars from Barrett Jackson, the world's largest automotive auctioneers: https://phoenixsymphony.org/ 3. Phoenix boasts some great small venues, hosting everything from punk to salsa and all points between and beyond, but the best known is certainly the Crescent Ballroom (http://www.crescentphx.com/) Mudhoney is playing there on the 22th (after our Welcome Banquet!), Toro Y Moi & Astronauts, Etc. is playing on the 23rd, and Flamenco por la Vida (winner of last year's Mayor's Arts Award) plays a free show on the 24th. Gang of Four and Eagles of Death Metal are playing earlier in the week. If you are looking for somewhere cozier to dance you might stop by Char's Has the Blues ( http://www.charshastheblues.com/) 4. Too small? Blues Traveler is playing the 21st, Madonna and Korn are playing on the 22nd (not together--I might pay to see that), Chucho Valdés is playing on the 23rd, and Sufjan Stevens is playing the 25th. 5. The Arizona Jazz Festival (http://www.arizonajazzfestival.com/) runs from the 23rd to the 25th, and features a great line-up of artists. The Nash (http://www.thenash.org/) a nationally recognized jazz venue hasn't posted their October schedule yet. 6. The Musical Instrument Museum (http://mim.org/) is a collection of over 15,000 instruments from around the world, and is the best-rated museum in Phoenix over on TripAdvisor. I know one of the head curators, who is hoping to collect instruments from the only two countries that are missing from their collection. They house the only octobass--and person who can play one--in the western hemisphere. They also have a wonderful live music hall, and during the week of the conference will have concerts by Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà, Peter Asher and Albert Lee, Gypsy Soul, and Te Vaka, covering three continents in a week. 7. On the other end of the spectrum, Organ Stop Pizza ( http://www.organstoppizza.com/) provides entertainment on an old Wurlitzer pipe organ, which powers a large range of instruments along with its pipes. The place claims to serve pizza, but having been a customer of Organ Stop for more than four decades, take it from me: you should not plan to eat here. The organ, however, is quite a bit of fun: mostly for the under six and over sixty crowd, but also for those young/old at heart. But you should register for IR16 before you buy any concert tickets. Now is the time to share these experiences! We would like experienced social media researchers to submit their individual stories of "failed" research approaches in the field of studying social media and social media users. We are looking for examples from all phases of the research process (e.g. data collection, data processing, data analysis, data sharing, also including administrative tasks, research ethics and legal challenges) that did not work out as expected. IR16 Update #7: Stitching Poetics

1. REGISTER NOW! You need no reminder, I assume, that the deadline for registering at the earlybird rate is August 1. So, this isn't a reminder. It's just a soothing co-affirmation. You also already know that if you are presenting, you MUST be registered by this date and the final version of your submission (for those of you who submitted a single paper or a panel) must be uploaded. If not (please excuse the shouting) YOU WILL BE UNCEREMONIOUSLY DROPPED FROM THE PROGRAM. There is always a bit of rush right at the deadline; much love for my fellow procrastinators. However, if it is any spur at all, I will note that the workshops on the 21st are likely to fill, and when they do, you will be out of luck... 2. ROOMS AT THE EMBASSY SUITES As many of you have noted, the (extended) room block is filled at the Embassy Suites, and the hotel is nearly full as well. I may be able to eke out another room or two--so it's worth checking back--but beyond that it's unlikely we'll be able to get more rooms. I am checking into securing a block at a neighboring hotel, and will announce here if I can manage that. 3. KEYNOTE If you needed another reason to be excited about coming to IR16--and really, how could you be *more* excited, I will remind you that Micha Cárdenas (http://michacardenas.org/) will be delivering the opening keynote, entitled "Stitching Poetics: Networked Bodies and Algorithmic Identity." The abstract for her talk: Despite recent legal gains for gay and lesbian couples, transgender people of color continue to be the number one target of murder among LGBT people in the US. How can the interaction between speculative media and social justice be understood, specifically in a context of the struggle for justice for trans women of color in the Americas? To do so, I propose the material/conceptual operation of the stitch to add to the operations of the cut and the fold as discussed by Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Sarah Kember and Joanna Zylinska. I will discuss media art by Adam Harvey, Zach Blas and the Electronic Disturbance Theater, alongside a discussion of my own practice-based research project, Local Autonomy Networks. These examples are the basis for a comparison of the practice-based research methods of speculative design, contestational design and community-based design with the goal of creating media poetics that can reduce violence against trans people of color. The Global Social Media Impact Study (www.ucl.ac.uk/global-social-media) is an ERC funded research project that aims to study and report on the use and consequences of social media for peoples all around the world. As part of our ambitious dissemination plans we are currently seeking a content manager to assist the team in creating a new website (named ‘Why We Post’), an online MOOC course and series of social media channels to share our research findings with a broad and global audience. The position is funded for 7 months in the first instance. January 7–9, 2016 http://smcs.tiss.edu/diginaka/ The advent of the digital and growing access to the Internet in India, along with the availability of cheap devices such as mobile phones has brought about an explosion of user-mediated creativity across various platforms, allowing for sharing, tweaking, co-creating and repurposing of digital media content in the public sphere. While the digital divide reproduces and intensifies various social hierarchies of gender, caste, class and region, one sees a simultaneous deployment of the digital by sections of society that previously were denied access. The cellular phone has been an important accessory in this widening of access; its use by the urban and rural poor at individual and collective levels opens pathways for incorporation into cultures of consumption and political hegemony as well as for resistance and *jugaad*. The mobile phone is a platform for recording, editing and uploading images, for accessing ‘pirated’ media content, for engaging with social media and for resisting moral codes pertaining to age, caste, class and gender. *Jugaad* as a “pragmatic workaround” (Rai 2012) [2] <http://smcs.tiss.edu/diginaka/#_ftn2> and a “frugal disruptive innovation” (Rajdou, et al, 2012) [3] <http://smcs.tiss.edu/diginaka/#_ftn3> has become a widespread mode of engaging with uncertain and fluid media ecologies and economic imperatives not only for the resource poor of the global South but also for corporations caught in the cusp of highly competitive and shifting global flows. For the poor in the cities and small towns of urban India, and increasingly in rural areas too, engaging with the digital through the mobile has become an important part of the everyday, a means of communication, pleasure, and identity construction. Large informal grey markets, for hardware, software and various services (providing films, charging, repairing and refurbishing phones) respond to this growing engagement with the digital. The scant regard for notions of copyright and intellectual property makes the production and consumption of popular media content a zone of contestation between audiences, the media industries and the state. Along with its potential use for greater local articulation and sharing is also the use of social media and the Internet for trolling, harassing and stalking, particularly of those who resist dominant political and social codes. In recent times, feminists, secularists and activists, among others, have been subjected to and resisted hate speech, making social media an important terrain for the playing out of political struggles. Feminists have engaged with the idea that online spaces can indeed be as dangerous for women as real spaces. Scholars have also turned their gaze to the production and representation of the online self in a variety of ways. Apart from this individual deployment of the digital, there is increasing use of these technologies by a range of movements, campaigns, local filmmakers and grassroots initiatives, with mixed and complicated effects. Ideological battles are waged on the Internet, as various interests use this space to marginalise oppositional viewpoints. Popular films in local dialects and idioms, made on shoe-string budgets, find their own niche audiences and modes of commercially viable distribution. Community radio and video are spaces not just for communication of “development messages” but also for subverting dominant flows of power and for granting access to voices hitherto denied media coverage. Internet journalism, in English and various languages, covers stories often neglected by the mainstream media, which are read, shared and have the potential of going viral, thus countering the censorship of the corporate controlled market. As the boundaries between content producers and users become fuzzy, this growing subaltern and alternative digital and online activity also compels the conventional news media and mainstream cinema to rethink their forms, their modes of content delivery and their revenue models, thus complicating the role of the maker and the user, and the nature of texts. Corporate and state surveillance, data mining, censorship and deployment of digital technologies and algorithms for management of user behaviour and temper these possibilities for democratisation. This three-day international seminar will merge this year with *Frames of Reference*, the annual graduate student seminar of the School.
