Seeking Best Practices in Asking Gender Identity
by Tiffani St.Cloud 08 Jul '15

08 Jul '15

Hello, The association where I work added sexual orientation and gender identity questions to our surveys three years ago (we survey graduate students in the US and Canada). While the sexual orientation question is working quite well, we are not satisfied with the reliability of the information we get from the gender identity question. We get a great many people writing in comments which makes it difficult to report reliable rates of transgender individuals. This is the item we currently use, which is based upon the Williams Institute recommendations. How do you self-identify? o Female o Male o Transgender female-to-male o Transgender male-to-female o Transgender do not identify as exclusively male or female o I self-identify as: _________________ A great many of our researchers have noted issues with this question so we have decided to convene a workgroup to look at the current best practices in asking gender identity and to decide upon the best way to ask this question (i.e. keep, modify, completely revise). If you are aware of any best practice documents on asking gender identity, or have developed items you feel might be more appropriate, I would greatly appreciate receiving that information. You can email me directly at: tstcloud(a)gmail.com. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Tiffani

Job Opening: NYC-based RA for PhD students/postdocs starting Sept 2015
by Alice E. Marwick 08 Jul '15

08 Jul '15

Come work with danah boyd & I at Data & Society. One project is on privacy & the other on connected learning. NYC-based only! http://www.datasociety.net/blog/jobs/research-analysts-reframing-privacy-en… We are seeking either one full-time research analyst (40+ hours/week) or two part-time (20+ hours/week) research analysts to help drive research components of two Data & Society projects. Start date is negotiable (by September 15 strongly preferred), and the appointment is for one year (with renewal possibilities). Applicants should have a Master’s or PhD in a social science or related field or significant experience doing similar types of research. This position is ideal for a researcher seeking to strengthen their research skills. Current New York City-based PhD students will be considered so long as they have flexibility in their schedules; students currently enrolled in coursework typically do not. Postdocs will be considered, but postdoctoral candidates should be attentive to how working in an interdisciplinary research institute may not be received well by traditional academic departments. PhDs seeking to work outside of the academy, in think tanks, or across disciplines may find this position quite satisfying. This is a fully funded position with benefits and vacation; starting salary is dependent on experience (full-time range: $45,000-$60,000). The appointment requires residency in New York. Travel may be necessary, both for conducting the research and for disseminating findings. The work will involve coding and analyzing interview transcripts, conducting focus groups and qualitative interviews, doing literature reviews, and managing tasks to assure completion of the research agenda. The work might also involve survey design, depending on experience. The research analyst would work as a part of our research team, collaborating with danah boyd, Alice Marwick, and Monica Bulger, as well as other Data & Society researchers. Core findings from the work will be published through white papers, public-facing venues, and scholarly venues; the research analyst can expect to be a co-author on at least one paper. ---- See the full call for more deets & where to send questions. D&S is great and these projects are both pretty awesome. -- Alice E. If anyone is in Sydney Australia next week..... Launch of Disorder and the Disinformation Society: The social dynamics of information, networks and software http://www.tandf.net/books/details/9780415540001/ Thursday 16 July, Great Hall UTS, Sydney 6.00pm drinks and canapés for 6.30pm start, concludes 8.15pm Order Causing Chaos Has the urgent pursuit of efficiency, innovation and self-gratification blinded us to the destabilising effects of change? The technological and scientific advances ignited by the industrial revolution are unquestionable. Yet on the flip side its many innovations disrupted communities, economies, ecosystems and the very power structures of nations. Its influence lingers still. One legacy is our information age – powerful computers driven by software of bewildering complexity and indispensable application, enabling interconnectivity to fuel the internet and, in turn, social media linkages across the globe. And it must all surely be good. In this lecture UTS researchers explore dimensions of the information age where the intended ‘ordering’ effects of new information technologies led to disorders never anticipated. From light-speed financial transactions making market strife, to social media movements losing momentum for lack of true leaders, join us to discover how disorder from order also shapes us. Dr Jonathan Marshall, Research Anthropologist Jonathan researches technology and society, publishing works on online life and gender, information mess, the social-psychology of climate change, and is currently working on climate politics and coal dependence. Dr Didar Zowghi, Professor of Software Engineering Based in the UTS Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, Didar researches the issues and challenges that arise out of communication rich, multidisciplinary activities of software and system development. CALL FOR POSTERS: IAMCR online conference: The Edge of Money: Hegemony or resistance?
by Becky Lentz 07 Jul '15

07 Jul '15

Please excuse any unavoidable cross-postings CALL FOR POSTERS: IAMCR online conference TITLE: The Edge of Money: Hegemony or resistance? https://edgeofmoney.noblogs.org/ DEADLINE: NOW upload your posters (png, gif, jpg) >From July 12-16, 2015, the cutting edge of communications researchers will converge in Montreal, Canada, at the annual meeting of International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR/AIECS/AIERI), the world¹s preeminent global communications and media research association. Rich in resonances, deft in dialog, an abundance of work on surveillance, democracy, technology, and cultural production will be shared under the theme hegemony or resistance¹. However, one important hegemony the edge of money will be largely unaccounted for. Due to high conference fees of hundreds of dollars per participant, vast segments of the IAMCR community will be underrepresented. The absence of civil society and community organizations, students, adjuncts, and other researchers without institutional affiliations and support reduces the richness of IAMCR¹s work. The Edge of Money online conference seeks to raise important questions, including: - Whose stories remain untold? - Which experiences will IAMCR miss? - What research will be excluded, and what important areas of policy will either be neglected or presented only from a privileged viewpoint? - What research is most valued and needed by those who cannot afford to attend? We propose to raise these questions through an IAMCR online conference featuring posters. We ask that those who cannot afford to attend IAMCR, but have something to contribute, post photographs of your posters to the online platform: https://edgeofmoney.noblogs.org Please create a poster telling your story, you may choose to include: 1) Who you are or how you want to be identified? 2) What perspective you would bring to IAMCR if you could afford to attend? 3) What burning issues you feel need to be addressed to make IAMCR more accessible? 4) A photo of your poster and, in the style of wearethe99percent.tumblr.com, you may want to include yourself in the photo (holding the poster, for instance). These posters will be on display during the IAMCR event in Montreal. ---------------------- Becky Lentz, PhD Associate Professor of Communication Studies Department of Art History/Communication Studies McGill University 853 Sherbrooke Street West, Arts Building, W-265 Montreal, QC, Canada H3A 0G5 Phone 514.398.4995 Fax 514.398.8557 Email: becky.lentz(a)mcgill.ca http://www.mcgill.ca/ahcs

New book announcement: Communication and Control: Tools, Systems, and New Dimensions
by MacDougall, Robert 07 Jul '15

07 Jul '15

Hi All, And please do pardon any message redundancies... -rob "Communication and Control: Tools, Systems, and New Dimensions" edited by R C MacDougall, now available at Amazon.com and other outlets, including: https://rowman.com/ISBN/9780739198766/Communication-and-Control-Tools-Syste… "Communication and Control" advocates a systems view of human communication in a time of intelligent, learning machines. This edited collection sheds new light on things as mundane-yet still profoundly consequential (and seemingly "low-tech")-as push buttons, pagers, and telemarketing systems. Contributors also investigate aspects of "remote control" related to education, organizational design, artificial intelligence, cyberwarfare, drones, and even binge-watching on Netflix. In line with a systems view, the collection takes up a media ecological view and will be of interest to students, scholars, and researchers in communication, new media, cognitive science, and science and technology studies. MacDougall has assembled a satisfying spectrum of voices to track how the pulsing, global spray of electrons we stubbornly call "media" continues to transform us. From theory to case study, Communication and Control is truly cutting-edge stuff that will put you in the feedback loop. - Roger Stahl, University of Georgia The shift from analog to digital is about much more than efficiency, precision, and progress. As MacDougall points out, it is a dramatic shift in what it is to be human and how we relate to the world. Computers are enveloping areas of expertise that were once the sole domain of human creativity and are transforming the relationship of humans to those domains. Such a shift is difficult to see and discuss, but MacDougall gets the conversation started. - Michael Wesch, Kansas State University Almost no part of life stays untouched by technology and media. Yet our everyday understanding of technological systems, media dynamics, and data networks is still relatively low-key in comparison. This powerful collection of essays comes to offer timely guidance by creatively and critically mapping the media ecologies of a rich array of systems, networks, and fields. A must-read for anyone who wants to probe the extent to which "control" controls. - Yoni Van Den Eede, Free University of Brussels This fine edited volume covers a broad spectrum of theoretical and applied topics. For the theorist, there are stimulating reinterpretations of Norbert Wiener and Marshall McLuhan. For those more intrigued by case studies, behold the chapters on push buttons, pagers, call centers, and chatbots. By consolidating so much varied work on emerging communication systems, this collection does exactly what a good anthology is supposed to do. - Graham Harman, American University in Cairo TOC Chapter 1: A Brief History of Communication and Control in Humans and Machines. *Extended Deadline July 24th* - CFP: “Critical Data Studies” – Big Data & Society Special Theme
by Andrew J Iliadis 07 Jul '15

07 Jul '15

*Extended Deadline July 24th* - CFP: “Critical Data Studies” – Big Data & Society Special Theme Guest Editors: Andrew Iliadis (Purdue University) and Federica Russo (Universiteit van Amsterdam) Critical Data Studies (CDS) is a growing field of research that focuses on the unique theoretical, ethical, and epistemological challenges posed by “Big Data.” Rather than treat Big Data as a scientifically empirical, and therefore largely neutral phenomena, CDS advocates the view that data should be seen as always-already constituted within wider data assemblages. Assemblages is a concept that helps capture the multitude of ways that already-composed data structures inflect and interact with society, its organization and functioning, and the resulting impact on individuals’ daily lives. CDS questions the many assumptions about data that permeate contemporary literature on information and society by locating instances where data may be naively taken to denote objective and transparent informational entities. CDS may be viewed as an emerging field connected to Information Ethics, Software Studies, and Critical Information Studies in that it seeks to question the ethical import of information and Big Data for society. Problems of causality, quality, security, and uncertainty concern CDS scholars. Recent articles outlining the theoretical program of CDS offer a new platform from which to question data in this manner. We seek essays for this special volume that broaden these latest commitments in CDS to include new empirical research projects on information and communication technologies (ICTs) that fall under the umbrella of Big Data, while also seeking to question their attendant epistemological shifts. Through the critical lens of ethics and morality, this special volume opens up CDS to localizations where Big Data can no longer be seen as neutral, and where an ethics of Big Data might emerge. Issues of interest include (but are not limited to): - Causality: how should we find causes in the era of ‘data-driven science?’ Do we need a new conception of causality to fit with new practices? - Quality: how should we ensure that data are good enough quality for the purposes for which we use them? What should we make of the open access movement; what kind of new technologies might be needed? - Security: how can we adequately secure data, while making it accessible to those who need it? How do we protect databases? - Uncertainty: can Big Data help with uncertainty, or does it generate new uncertainties? What technologies are essential to reduce uncertainty elements in data-driven sciences? Proposals of 1000 words are invited for consideration and inclusion in the Special Theme to be published in Big Data & Society (BD&S), an open access peer-reviewed scholarly journal that publishes interdisciplinary work principally in the social sciences, humanities and computing and their intersections with the arts and natural sciences about the implications of Big Data for societies. Manuscripts should be 8,000 words for an Original Research Article, 3,000 words for a Commentary, and 1,000 words for an essay in the Early Career Research Forum section. All submissions of Original Research Articles to BD&S are double-blind, and triple peer-reviewed. Commentaries and ECR submissions are reviewed by the Guest Editors.
