Hello, The association where I work added sexual orientation and gender identity questions to our surveys three years ago (we survey graduate students in the US and Canada). While the sexual orientation question is working quite well, we are not satisfied with the reliability of the information we get from the gender identity question. We get a great many people writing in comments which makes it difficult to report reliable rates of transgender individuals. This is the item we currently use, which is based upon the Williams Institute recommendations. How do you self-identify? o Female o Male o Transgender female-to-male o Transgender male-to-female o Transgender do not identify as exclusively male or female o I self-identify as: _________________ A great many of our researchers have noted issues with this question so we have decided to convene a workgroup to look at the current best practices in asking gender identity and to decide upon the best way to ask this question (i.e. keep, modify, completely revise). If you are aware of any best practice documents on asking gender identity, or have developed items you feel might be more appropriate, I would greatly appreciate receiving that information. Start date is negotiable (by September 15 strongly preferred), and the appointment is for one year (with renewal possibilities). Applicants should have a Master’s or PhD in a social science or related field or significant experience doing similar types of research. This position is ideal for a researcher seeking to strengthen their research skills. Current New York City-based PhD students will be considered so long as they have flexibility in their schedules; students currently enrolled in coursework typically do not. Postdocs will be considered, but postdoctoral candidates should be attentive to how working in an interdisciplinary research institute may not be received well by traditional academic departments. PhDs seeking to work outside of the academy, in think tanks, or across disciplines may find this position quite satisfying. This is a fully funded position with benefits and vacation; starting salary is dependent on experience (full-time range: $45,000-$60,000). The appointment requires residency in New York. Travel may be necessary, both for conducting the research and for disseminating findings. The work will involve coding and analyzing interview transcripts, conducting focus groups and qualitative interviews, doing literature reviews, and managing tasks to assure completion of the research agenda. The work might also involve survey design, depending on experience. The research analyst would work as a part of our research team, collaborating with danah boyd, Alice Marwick, and Monica Bulger, as well as other Data & Society researchers. Announcing New Part-Time MSc at the OII

Dear all, I am very pleased to announce that from September 2015 the Oxford Internet Institute<http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/>, University of Oxford, will be accepting applications for part-time study<http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/graduatestudy/part-time-msc/> for the post-graduate MSc degree in the Social Science of the Internet starting in October 2016. This will enable students to take the degree on a part-time basis, but one that is fully integrated with the full-time MSc programme. Introduced in 2009, the MSc programme in the Social Science of the Internet regularly attracts high numbers of excellent applicants who spend a year in Oxford taking a range of classes helping them understand life online and become active internet researchers. By also offering the option of part-time study we hope to broaden access to Oxford to those who are not able to attend on a full-time basis. The part-time option is aimed at working professionals in the internet industry, government policy experts, and any other types of students who would prefer to study on a part-time basis for personal or work reasons. *Extended Deadline July 24th* - CFP: “Critical Data Studies” – Big Data & Society Special Theme Guest Editors: Andrew Iliadis (Purdue University) and Federica Russo (Universiteit van Amsterdam) Critical Data Studies (CDS) is a growing field of research that focuses on the unique theoretical, ethical, and epistemological challenges posed by “Big Data.” Rather than treat Big Data as a scientifically empirical, and therefore largely neutral phenomena, CDS advocates the view that data should be seen as always-already constituted within wider data assemblages. Assemblages is a concept that helps capture the multitude of ways that already-composed data structures inflect and interact with society, its organization and functioning, and the resulting impact on individuals’ daily lives. CDS questions the many assumptions about data that permeate contemporary literature on information and society by locating instances where data may be naively taken to denote objective and transparent informational entities. CDS may be viewed as an emerging field connected to Information Ethics, Software Studies, and Critical Information Studies in that it seeks to question the ethical import of information and Big Data for society. Problems of causality, quality, security, and uncertainty concern CDS scholars. Recent articles outlining the theoretical program of CDS offer a new platform from which to question data in this manner. We seek essays for this special volume that broaden these latest commitments in CDS to include new empirical research projects on information and communication technologies (ICTs) that fall under the umbrella of Big Data, while also seeking to question their attendant epistemological shifts. Through the critical lens of ethics and morality, this special volume opens up CDS to localizations where Big Data can no longer be seen as neutral, and where an ethics of Big Data might emerge. Issues of interest include (but are not limited to): - Causality: how should we find causes in the era of ‘data-driven science?’ Do we need a new conception of causality to fit with new practices? - Quality: how should we ensure that data are good enough quality for the purposes for which we use them? What should we make of the open access movement; what kind of new technologies might be needed? - Security: how can we adequately secure data, while making it accessible to those who need it? How do we protect databases? - Uncertainty: can Big Data help with uncertainty, or does it generate new uncertainties? What technologies are essential to reduce uncertainty elements in data-driven sciences? Proposals of 1000 words are invited for consideration and inclusion in the Special Theme to be published in Big Data & Society (BD&S), an open access peer-reviewed scholarly journal that publishes interdisciplinary work principally in the social sciences, humanities and computing and their intersections with the arts and natural sciences about the implications of Big Data for societies. Manuscripts should be 8,000 words for an Original Research Article, 3,000 words for a Commentary, and 1,000 words for an essay in the Early Career Research Forum section. All submissions of Original Research Articles to BD&S are double-blind, and triple peer-reviewed. Commentaries and ECR submissions are reviewed by the Guest Editors.
