CFP HICSS Minitrack Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science (HICSS) January 4-7, 2017, Big Island, Hawaii, USA Kauai, Hawaii, USA http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/ Papers Due: June 15, 2016 This minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. Globalization has historically been tied to technological innovation, and the present era of a networked information society is no different. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided the infrastructure for multinational businesses, created new cultural connections irrespective of geographic boundaries and distances, and allowed an increasingly mobile global population to be connected to their friends, families, and cultures no matter where they are. The issues surrounding global, international, and cross cultural issues in Information Systems (IS) attracted much scholarly attention and have been explored under myriad contexts. In line with the track recognition that the Internet has transformed the way we work, learn, and play, our minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. The minitrack welcomes submissions that relate to all aspects of global IS, or IS research situated in a global, international or cross-cultural context. The minitrack is open to all methodological approaches and perspectives. We are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. This faculty search is part of a cross-college cluster hire being conducted in the Integrated Security Destination Area (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html) which is one of several focused Virginia Tech initiatives to recruit and support world-class groups of faculty that bridge disciplinary strengths. This initial hire focuses on multiple aspects of today’s embedded cyber-physical/human systems. We seek a colleague who will build upon our departmental, college, and university strengths in the study of all dimensions of governance, privacy, and security at the interconnections of the digital and physical worlds as humans, groups, institutions, and systems link these domains of complex action. Over the next four years, the number of Internet-connected devices will more than double, changing the ways people interact with technologies and their environments; however, fundamental security and privacy challenges have yet to be adequately addressed for these new technologies. This cluster hire will foster cross-disciplinary collaborations that explore these challenges through the lenses of technology, law, governance, ethics, and business. We are interested in applicants who can demonstrate research and teaching expertise in one or more of the following domains of inquiry: human security and insecurity (broadly defined) in “the Internet of things”; the effects of these new developments on politics, governance, and security in organizations, states, or other entities; U.S. national, subnational, or transnational responses to network security threats; human governance of cyber-physical systems, property regimes, or regulatory organizations; security and governance questions related to immigration, refugee flows, cross-border movements, and displaced populations; security and class, gender, and/or race/ethnicity. Focusing on these governance issues and public policy responses in North America is the main emphasis but other cross-national perspectives are welcome. Applicants who approach these concerns from a theoretical and critical perspective are encouraged to apply. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester. This position will begin August 10, 2017. Required qualifications: Earned doctorate in political science or related field at the time of application or degree in hand by August 10, 2017. The other day I was told by someone not in academia that there are regularly planted independently written 'articles' (quotes mine) to places like the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) https://www.ssrn.com so as to give a 'credible source' for right wing racist media pundits and those who follow them. Thoughts on this process? SSRN is an arm of Elsevier. As apparent by below planted 'article' (quotes again mine) and the multitude of scientific errors, there is no peer review. Does this 'open access' of research journals from Elsevier dilute any credibility they have? Would love to chat with someone at Elsevier about this. I do understand what a tough place the publishing industry is in right now. Conceptualizing, Creating, & Controlling Constructive and Controversial Comments: A CSCW 2017 Research-athon http://comp.social.gatech.edu/comments-cscw2017/ Many social media platforms provide features for commenting, which often provide affordances for people to give feedback to others. Around the theme of advancing research about online comments, this workshop aims to bring together a diverse range of researchers for cross-discipline community building and productive mixed-methods research. The workshop is structured around a research “hackathon,” where participants actively work on producing initial stages of research, theory, and design related to a central dataset (in the case of this workshop, public comments from a historical reddit.com corpus). Participants will form collaborative teams to tackle questions of interest that move forward current thinking around online comment behaviors, participants, quality, and design. The one-day workshop is led by 5 researchers, and it will accommodate up to 32 participants. Call for Workshop Applications The CCCCCCCR workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to work collaboratively in a "research-athon/hackathon" style workshop. We invite participants with both qualitative and quantitative backgrounds to collectively investigate a shared commenting dataset (everyone will be granted access to a collection of shared, similar datasets from Reddit) in order to generate immediate questions, hypotheses, findings, designs, and theories. We invite proposals from academic, industry, public sector, and activist researchers that touch on commenting in relation to: - Behaviors: commenting participation, norms, and quality - People: comment posters, repliers, and audiences - Moderation: commenting promotion, deletion, and control - Design: comment threads, replies, and interaction The workshop will be held on Sunday February 26th, 2017, from 8:30-5:00. Additionally, two weeks before CSCW, participants will be expected to attend a 1-hour pre-conference online video conference meeting, where workshop organizers will provide access to datasets, organize topic areas with suggested teams (based on workshop applications, but these are flexible), and answer any questions. We will also point participants with specific interests to particular portions of the dataset. (For any participants who wish to explore qualitative methods – e.g., conduct interviews during workshop time – we will ask them to consider plans for this work at this point before the workshop.) The Sarai Programme, CSDS is organising the Lives of Data Workshop on 5th to 7th January, 2017. The workshop examines the historical and emergent conditions of data-driven knowledge production and circulation in India and South Asia. In the context of the Data Revolution, the workshop links emerging research on the history of statistics, new/old technological forms of inscription, digital infrastructures, and governance after Big Data in India and South Asia. The workshop brings together interdisciplinary researchers and practitioners with backgrounds in history of science, anthropology, media and technology studies, software engineering, data science, economics, and policy-making. Games have grown into an important form of culture and human interaction, expanding from entertainment to other areas of life. Internet and social media form an increasingly vital part of communication, social life and distribution of media and services. The programme is particularly targeted at the questions of analysis, design and application of online services and digital games from user- and culturally focused perspectives. The programme directs you to develop academic skills like critical thinking, scientific writing and carrying out research projects while encouraging active and comprehensive involvement with the practical processes and phenomena related to games and Internet. UTA has high profile research groups that are focused on Internet and game studies. There has also been a long history of education in hypermedia and in Information Studies and Interactive Media that forms the basis of this programme. This programme approaches the wide range of its subject matter from the interconnected perspectives of games, game players, game developers and game cultures. It will give you the academic skills needed to analyze, observe and understand the developments in this field of study while also encouraging a more pragmatic involvement and hands-on attitude with games and playful design. After completing the Master’s Degree Programme in Internet and Game Studies you will: • be able to identify, define and analyse interactive media in its different forms • understand and be capable of critically using the concepts and theories that relate to the fundamental character of games and internet • have in-depth understanding about the forms, contents, practices in games and internet as cultural, social, technical and commercial phenomena • be able to independently acquire scientific knowledge • be able to communicate the results from research, work in interdisciplinary teams and act as an expert in the field of interactive media. Graduates typically combine the skills and knowledge derived from this programme with previous studies and proficiencies that enable them to work as experts of games and Internet in various professional roles, in research, public sector as well as in industry. The need for knowledgeable workforce is growing in the fields related to games and interactive media, but the students should adopt an active attitude in fashioning their own specific area of expertise and professional profile. As a graduate you can take up multiple work roles that relate to the research and development of games as well as to the application of game play and game design for various purposes. Working as a university educated expert in this rapidly developing field of interactive media requires solid research and communication skills combined with an active and independent mindset, and willingness to explore and innovate new approaches to understanding and applying interactive media into practice. The possible jobs of graduates include researchers, developers, critics and specialists working with the interpretation, evaluation or implementation of games and social media. This master's degree provides the required background if you wish to pursue doctoral studies in interactive media, internet research or in game studies, for example in UTA’s Doctoral programme in Information Studies and Interactive Media.
