Call for Papers InfoSocial 2017 A graduate student conference hosted by the twin programs of Media, Technology, and Society (MTS) and Technology and Social Behavior (TSB) at Northwestern University. The idea of the Network Society is approaching the U.S. drinking age. And the Digital Era? As old as Rick Astley. To break new ground and continue to explore how people interact through and with technology, we need novel ideas, updated methods, and a disregard for disciplinary conventions and boundaries. Enter InfoSocial. InfoSocial is a student-run conference dedicated to showcasing interdisciplinary graduate student research on the role of technology in contemporary society. In 2017, the conference aims to bring scholars from diverse disciplines together to showcase new, innovative approaches to key questions, and highlight opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations that explore the (now old) argument that human society has forever been changed by technology. This is your call. We are looking for papers authored by graduate students (submitted as extended abstracts) that are theoretically engaging, methodologically sound, and socially relevant, as well as timely. We are disciplinary agnostics, seeking submissions from within and across fields like communication and media studies, information science, computer science, science and technology studies, human-computer interaction, sociology, psychology, political science, and anthropology. New and mixed methodologies will excite us, including approaches that blend established methods with new, innovative tools. I was wondering if someone has created a running list of who is harvesting government websites ahead of the US government transition next month. There have been a few articles published in the past couple of days focusing on individual efforts, but it seems a lot of groups might be overlapping what they are archiving. In particular, competition law, sector specific regulation (if it exists), data protection and human rights law are considered and assessed to the extent they can tackle such concentrations of power for the benefit of users. Using a series of illustrative case studies, of Internet provision (including the net neutrality debate), search, mobile devices and app stores, and the cloud, the work demonstrates the gaps that currently exist in EU law and regulation. It is argued that these gaps exist due, in part, to current overarching trends guiding the regulation of economic power, namely neoliberalism, by which only the situation of market failure can invite ex ante rules, buoyed by the lobbying of regulators and legislators by those in possession of such economic power to achieve outcomes which favour their businesses. Given this systemic, and extra-legal, nature of the reasons as to why the gaps exist, solutions from outside the system are proposed at the end of each case study. *Endorsement* 'This is a richly textured, critically argued work, shedding new light on case studies in information law which require critical thinking. Best regards, Martin Eynard (PhD) CIECS (CONICET, UNC) *ONTEAIKEN N° 22* *“Global Labor”: transformations, sensibilities and social conflicts* The numerous researches that explain and qualify the transformations of the *“world of work” *over the last twenty years cannot ignore the *"global/ local"* component running through these phenomena. The numerous researches that explain and qualify the transformations of the “world of work” over the last twenty years cannot ignore the "global/ local" component running through these phenomena. Behind this finding we could recognize at least the following relevant features linked to the complexity announced in the emergence of this "metamorphosis": *a-* Firstly, that the understanding of the diverse and complex "global / local" realities of labor require efforts that strain the fragmentation of disciplinary approaches; *b-* In addition, the understanding of the problems associated with the realities of the bodies-that-work (Lisdero) requires linking the transformations of/in the global/local labor world, with the deep metamorphosis of the conditions that shape the subject’s everyday life. *c-* This insight should not leave aside the debate on the implications that the different modes of accumulation cause on inclusion/exclusion/marginalit y and the forms of spoliation of the various and heterogeneous masses of workers. *d-* Finally, it is also important the way in which the global production networks develop concurrently in relation with a sets emergency/latency conflicts that in turn are connected, again, with the aforementioned transformation of the daily lives of thousands of subjects with the current processes of social re-structuring. Such conflicts demand to be understood from a perspective that goes beyond the false antinomy micro-macro that reconfigures dimensions such as space/time or work/leisure/non work, in order to promote a look that re-binds an (undetermined) global logic of the social. *** Reminder; sorry for cross-posting *** CfP: “Media Policy and Digitalization” workshop at NOPSA 2017 Odense (DK), August 8-11, 2017 The workshop will constitute The 2nd European Symposium on Media Policy. Description: Media policy constitutes a neglected sub-field of political sciences and has, traditionally, been relegated to the realms of media and communication studies. However, since it concerns the structures that support and regulate democracy, freedom of expression, and public participation, and since it is of increasing interest to policy-makers on both national and super-national levels, it is an area that could also be of interest for the political-science community. This workshop proposes an occasion for starting such a conversation and fertilizing the ground for increased integration of media policy in the political sciences. Issues of media policy have become pertinent in recent years as technological and social development reconfigures the object of this policy area. So, the workshop will focus particularly on the challenges that digitalization poses to media policy and the questions that it raises. These challenges include – but are not limited to – (1) how traditional media markets such as broadcasters and the press increasingly converge on digital media, challenging the regulatory frameworks and subsidy systems put in place by policy-makers; (2) how digital intermediaries such as Google and Facebook are central actors in citizens’ media use but transgress the tools of the same policy-makers; and (3) the extent to which one can even distinguish between “media policy” and other policy areas such as cultural policy, policies of infrastructure (telecommunications), and trade/business policy. Workshop format: We emphasize the workshop format of the event, expecting all authors with accepted abstract to submit full papers before the workshop (see timeline below) and act as designated opponents on other authors’ papers (i.e., reading the paper in advance and prepare comments). At the workshop, we will have 45-60 minutes for each paper: 20 minutes for presentation, 10 minutes for comments from the opponent, and 15-30 minutes for general discussion. This format should allow for time to work in-depth with the paper contributions. The workshop will accept a maximum of 15 papers, and we hope to be able to publish the best of them as a special issue. Timeline: January 15, 2017: Deadline for paper proposals.
