Many thanks for your interest and for sharing, The editors Ella Fegitz Tiffany Page Leila Whitley -------------------------------- *CALL FOR PAPERS: Themed issue on ‘Radical negativity’* Over the past decade, feminist and queer scholarship has begun to productively address the dark aspects of human subjectivity, such as unhappiness, irresponsibility, passivity, vulnerability, failure, shame, hesitancy, pain, dispossession, disappointment, rage, madness and depression, contributing to a rethinking and revaluation of the negative. Critique has focused on how normative subject positions are powerful mechanisms that reproduce dominant power structures such as whiteness, patriarchy, sexism, cissexism, heterosexism, and ableism. Such normative subject positions can demand or assume whiteness and thus position those who are non-white as ‘invaders’ in the space of the institution (Puwar 2009), present gender subservience as happiness (Ahmed 2010), and demand compulsory heterosexuality (Rich 1980). Resisting these (normative) demands placed on identities can form subjectivities perceived to be oriented around discomfort, refusal and pain. Borrowing from Eve Sedgwick, this special issue proposes that forms of the negative are “not distinctly ‘toxic’ parts of a group or individual identity that can be excised; they are instead integral to and residual in the processes by which identity itself is formed (2003, p.63).” In choosing to conceptualise subjectivity through the possibility of treating the negative as a viable and integral resource for resistance and a locus of social change, this issue will pay particular attention to the relation of negativity to resistant political practices. More specifically, we are interested in how the formation of subjectivities based on negative states and in relation to negative affects can be productive sites for political engagement. What is opened up or made possible by attending to the negative as an interruption to the force of restrictive social norms upon certain psyche and bodies? We welcome papers based in any discipline that significantly engage feminist and queer theory to respond to one or more of the following questions: 1. How can the negative be conceptualised as an interruption to the force of restrictive social norms? 2. How might rejecting the social compulsion toward positive affect allow for, and even become necessary to, resisting normative structures of power? 3. If we accept that power can differentially produce subjects, and that there is a relationship between power and resistance, how do these differences in turn utilise the negative, and what is the negative’s role in the capacity to resist? Possible topics include, but are not limited to, explorations of: - the construction of normative subjectivities and their effects on those deemed not to ‘fit’ - the construction of subjectivities in relation to narratives of trauma or shame - queer subversion in the face of ambivalence, incoherence and difficulty - the relation between politics and the construction of ‘woundedness’ - the distribution (and understanding) of vulnerability - the construction of health, happiness or ‘goodness’ - the racialization of affect - the gendering of affect - the navigation/rejection of gender norms and cis-sexism - the ways in which gender, sexuality, race and ability inflect the interpretation of affect more generally - deviance - name-calling Issue editors: Ella Fegitz, Tiffany Page and Leila Whitley. CFP ANZCA 2016: The State of Digital Research Methods

With apologies for cross-posting… Call for Papers, ANZCA 2016 Scraping the Political, Economical and Social: The state of digital methods for media and communication research Media and communication researchers have embraced the computational and digitisation turns (Rogers, 2014), which have notably seen the multidisciplinary inclusion of computer science with the humanities. From early methods that some argued over-claimed their impact, towards contemporary approaches that have been nuanced and improved by researchers and specialists, digital media methods are a useful collection of ‘how to’ tools to research social, economical and political sites. Globally, multiple researchers and institutions have developed cutting edge technologies that enable a large proportion of media and communication researchers to interrogate existing research sites in new ways. Additionally, these digital media methods have enabled researchers to find new research environments through data repositories, big data, digital media platforms, and social media, for example. Our interest in digital data will increase further as we see new cultural practices emerge through activities associated with drones, autonomous automobiles, sensors, and the internet of things. There remains a significant gap, however, in our current media and communication methodologies and current research technology. While we are able to identify conversations of public concern and how they inform ‘issues’ (Burgess & Matamoros, 2016), there remains a problem of how to integrate cultural context (humour, geography, history, etc.) into our understanding of large social media data sets. Further, the increasing shift away from text-based communication towards visual methods, i.e. Instagram, instigates a methodological conundrum (Highfield and Leaver, 2016). Finally, while the efforts of Wills (2016), Fordyce et al. (2016), Bruns et al. (2016) and Dowd (2016) advance our understanding of ontologies and typographies of social media data, further work needs to be undertaken to standardise our collection and analysis methods of digital media. Collectively, these issues present problems in data gathering techniques, research design, university ethics and access for digital media research methods. We are seeking contributions from scholars for a ‘progression session’ at the 2016 Australia and New Zealand Communication Association (ANZCA) that can address one or many of the following: 1. What are the cutting edge examples of digital media methods in media and communication research? 2. How can we integrate cultural contexts into the broad computational approach of digital platform research? 3. How can we as media and communication researchers access digital media tools for our own projects? 4. How should we approach ontologies and/or typologies for digital media research? 5. How do we negotiate these emerging research areas with our university ethics boards? Contributions to this panel will form the basis for a collected edition on digital media research methods. As in previous years, we will be co-locating with the ESIP Summer Meeting. There is no cost to register. *Meeting Theme and Objectives* The 2016 meeting theme, “Expanding Data Networks,” will focus on the new challenges and efforts in making data accessible, discoverable, and deliverable while promoting open data policies, standards, and compliance with funders’ emerging data management requirements. A strong emphasis is on data synthesis and technological progress made in data network infrastructure. using deep learning to characterize campaign television ads

Apologies for cross-posting. Thought many of you would find of great interest this latest experiment, which took the Internet Archive's TV Political Ad Archive of 267 campaign ads airing on monitored television stations over the last several months, split them into a sequence of images, one per second, and ran them through Google's neural network Cloud Vision API to catalog the visual contents of each frame including major objects, activities, and themes it depicts, extract any recognizable text, estimate the geographic location it captures, and identify the presence and emotional expression of any human faces. Coupled with the live airing data compiled by the Archive (http://politicaladarchive.org/) and the fact that ads were analyzed in sequence every 1 second, you can do all kinds of analyses, from which themes were aired the most and where to trends in the sequencing of themes in ads.
