*Deadline for applications: 5th March 2016.* *Start date: October 2016.* *Relating To Data: understanding data through visualisation* is a network of three funded PhD studentships which focuses on how people relate to data through their visualisation, the narratives and meanings people attach to visualisations and the potential understanding produced by them. The successful candidates will be located at one of the universities of Leeds, Sheffield or York, depending on the studentship for which they apply (see below). Thanks, Huatong ------------------- *Globalizing User Experience: Strategies, Practices, and Techniques for Culturally Sensitive Design* *Technical Communication*, the journal of the Society for Technical Communication (STC), is soliciting article proposals for an upcoming special issue that will examine how technical communicators can design for new kinds of user experiences in international, cross-cultural, and multicultural contexts. This special issue will be published in February of 2017, and the guest editors are Guiseppe Getto and Huatong Sun. *SPECIAL ISSUE DESCRIPTION* Cultural diversity has been embraced as a core value by many companies in today’s increasingly globalized and multicultural workplace. Meanwhile, the design, implementation, evaluation, distribution, and consumption of information products now happen more often on a global level. While a majority of companies are not designing global-ready products from the beginning, the most successful products usually traverse the local in favor of a global user base. Thus, global UX design is a common part of the work lives of many technical communicators (Quesenbery & Szuc, 2012; Schumacher, 2010; Sun, 2012). At a time when the roles of technical communicator and user experience designer have begun to blur in productive ways (Redish, 2010; Redish & Barnum, 2011), technical communicators have been making valuable contributions to the development of the UX field by bringing theory, research, and design techniques. At the same time, UX is becoming an essential skill set for technical communicators in a variety of industries. Indeed, today’s technical communicators are designers who employ information and communication technologies (ICTs) to transform our workplaces, our communities, and our society. As technology design moves towards more socially- and ethically-oriented approaches, technical communicators are playing an important role in cultivating cultural humility (Tervalon & Murray-Garcia, 1998). This includes accounting for cultural differences and building a more inclusive and diverse workplace in an increasingly global society with our rhetorical expertise and empathy toward users. The trends described above are increasingly affecting the work we do as industry practitioners, academic researchers, university and college educators, and independent entrepreneurs in technical communication. It is time for us to reflect on our endeavors so far, to examine our surrounding cultures and structures at a new stage of globalization, and to develop better strategies, practices, and techniques to design more culturally appropriate information products in order to empower our users globally and locally. *POSSIBLE TOPICS FOR THIS SPECIAL ISSUE* The guest editors invite proposals for papers on applied research or theory, case histories/studies, tutorials, and/or annotated bibliographies that address issues such as the following: - How should technical communicators attend to issues related to user experience within the organizations they work in, and around the products they help deploy, in terms of collaboration, communication, complexity, and change (Redish, 2010)? - What can technical communicators teach their UX colleagues about cross-cultural and international communication and product deployment? - How should technical communicators work as user advocates to develop more culturally sensitive design and research methods to address the digital divide between the global north and south? - What expertise do technical communicators bring to informing innovative practices of work and design to develop a more diverse workplace and a more heterogeneous society? - How do political, legal, economic, and/or technological issues affect the ways that information products are deployed within local cultures? - How do cultural differences relating to intellectual property and copyright affect technical communication practices – particularly practices involving globally distributed teams? *SUBMISSION GUIDELINES* Proposals should be no more than 400 words in length. COMMUNICATION POLICY AND TECHNOLOGY (CP&T) section - Call for Papers International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) Academic Conference, July 27-31, 2016, Leicester (UK) http://iamcr.org/news/cfp2016 The Communication Policy and Technology (CP&T) Section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites submissions for the IAMCR 2016 conference to be held from July 27-31, 2015 in Leicester (UK). The deadline for submissions of abstracts for papers and panel proposals is February 15, 2016. The conference will be held under the general theme: 'Memory, Commemoration and Communication: Looking Forward, Looking Back'. The latter seeks to explore the relationship between memory, commemoration and communication. This theme anticipates the 60th anniversary of the IAMCR in 2017, an organisation which has played a strong role in the development of media and communication studies. Although scholars have long been interested in memory and culture, advancements in technologies are providing new and innovative opportunities to think about how it is created, preserved, passed on, and archived. Starting from the remit of the Communication Policy and Technology section, we focus on the role and meaning of media and communication technologies, both analogue and digital, in past, current and future societies, as well as their policy implications. For the IAMCR conference in Leicester we especially invite papers that analyse and discuss the interrelationship between society, analogue and digital media and the shifting borders between public, private and corporate space in past, current and future societies. We refer to media, communication technologies and online platforms, ranging from print-cultures, telecommunication, social media to sharing economy applications in different domains of society (health, hospitality, transport, education, surveillance, etc.). We are interested in the politics of these media platforms and communication technologies and how they relate to the transformation of public, private and corporate space. With public space in a state of flux, the relations between (state) institutions, citizens, and corporations are being fundamentally reconfigured. There is a strong push to limit and reduce the role of state institutions in the organization of public space, whereas citizens and corporations claim and are also expected to fulfil key public functions. Although this push should be understood as part of the long-term development of the neoliberal mode of governance, the rapid rise of digital media platforms appears to both accelerate and further complicate this development. A key aspect of these developments is the collection, storage, processing, (re)use and commodification of (personal) data, based on the ‘datafication’ in all areas of life. We need to critically assess from interdisciplinary perspective what this means for the (dis)empowerment of users/citizens/consumers as (not) being in control (any more) regarding identity, security, privacy and publicness. The CP&T section therefore invites submissions that critically engage with these issues. In addition we welcome papers and panel proposals addressing the following more particular themes that fit in the general call for papers and are relevant to the section: - Technologies of/for memory: the social, political, economic and policy implications of digital media for archives, museums, broadcasters and public and private heritage institutions as well as individuals, families and organisations. Especially in relation to access, ephemerality and obsolescence, creative and cultural industry policy, data citizenship - Technologies of digital media storage for researchers: the social, political, economic and policy implications of digital media for data archives, data repositories and especially access to publicly funded research data - Digital media and contested spaces of commemoration: mobile networked media and digital platforms provide new tools for recording, sharing and contesting formal rituals of commemoration - from state occasions to family and group memorials. How are they used to reshape boundaries between public and private and to contest official 'he-stories'? - Internet governance and the implications of the safe harbour ruling in relation to transnational data exchange between Europe and the United States: Post Schrems ruling and implications for privacy - Social media governance and online harassment, trolling and cyberbullying particularly as it relates to gender, race, class etc. - Emerging implications of ubiquitous and embedded computing and networking especially in relation to smart cities, the internet of things - Issues around institutional or activists’ memories, linking past and present in social and political struggles to affect policy or discursive change - Issues around archiving and securing social movement content at risk of disappearing through corporate or state repression - Issues around too much memory, the right to be forgotten rather than remembered - Issues around big data and memory, linked to the point above - Policy issues around media and communication technology pluralism, diversity and concentration - Policies and debates around public service broadcasting and the public interest - Policies and research into digital literacy and the digital divide. In addition we also strongly invite abstract proposals for a panel on Internet governance co-sponsored by the Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet). Topics may include but are not limited to technical and legal questions of Internet governance, governance mechanisms and their implementation and the analysis of key Internet governance concepts such as net neutrality, multi-stakeholderism and cyber-security. The CP&T Section will also look for additional opportunities for hosting joint sessions with other IAMCR Sections and Working groups. Submission information The CP&T section welcomes proposals for papers bearing on the above or related issues by submitting an abstract. Abstracts should contain title, main question or research problem, theoretical framework, method(s) used, and – if applicable – (expected) empirical outcomes. Submitted abstracts will be evaluated by a double blind review on the basis of: (1) theoretical contribution, (2) methods, (3) quality of writing, (4) literature review, (5) relevance of the submission to the work of the CP&T section, and (6) originality and/or significance of the work. The scholarly presentation of accepted submissions can take place in two types of sessions: paper presentation sessions (i.e. 4-5 presenters each with 12-15 minutes, requiring full paper submitted on time) and high intensity sessions (i.e. 6-8 presenters each with 5-7 minutes). Proposals for panels of 90 minutes are also welcome. A complete CP&T panel proposal must have 4 to 5 papers and include: 1. The panel description text, including, the panel title, a framing text, the names of the panelists and the titles of their papers. The framing text (maximum 350 words) should contain the overall idea and goal of the panel, and how it responds to the CP&T section call. A panel chair and a discussant should also be proposed. 2. An abstract for each paper, including title and author(s). The panel description text and the individual abstracts must be submitted individually. Thus a panel with 5 papers involves making 6 separate submissions via the Open Conference System (OCS). Abstracts can be submitted directly by the panel authors or the panel coordinator can submit them on the authors’ behalf. All abstract submissions in a panel must indicate “PANEL:” as the first word of their title and the complete title of the panel must appear in the first line of each abstract. The panel proposal will be reviewed and based on this review we will accept, accept with revisions, or decline the panel. Submission of abstracts, panel proposals and (if accepted) full papers must be submitted through the online Open Conference System (OCS) at http://iamcr-ocs.org from 1 December 2015 until 15 February 2016. Early submission is strongly encouraged. There are to be no email submissions of abstracts addressed to any Section or Working Group Head. It is expected that for the most part, only one (1) abstract will be submitted per person for consideration by the Conference. However, under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same applicant either individually or as part of any group of authors. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to other Sections or Working Groups of the Association for consideration, after an initial submission. Such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be automatically rejected by the Open Conference System, by the relevant Head or by the Conference Programme Reviewer. Such applicants risk being removed entirely from the conference programme. Upon submission of an abstract, you will be asked to confirm that your submission is original and that it has not been previously published in the form presented. You will also be given an opportunity to declare if your submission is currently before another conference for consideration. Presenters are expected to bring fully developed work to the conference. Prior to the conference, it is expected that a completed paper will be submitted to Section, Session Chairs, and Discussants. If a proposal is accepted, the presenter must also register for conference participation in order to be included in the final conference programme of the Section. A CP&T best paper award prize may be awarded to one of the paper presenters, based on the full papers submitted in time. At *First Person Scholar* (http://www.firstpersonscholar.com/) we seek to develop and expand the role of the game critic through the publication of timely, rigorous, and accessible criticism that challenges all players to engage in *critical play*. As Mary Flanagan writes, “Critical play is characterized by a careful examination of social, cultural, political, or even personal themes that function as alternates to popular play spaces” (*Critical Play* 6). The articles we publish encourage players—be them developers, scholars, critics, or enthusiasts—to consider alternatives to popular interpretations of games and game play. Through this discourse we seek to establish and sustain a critical conversation amongst those producing and playing games, demonstrating in the process that the game critic is a figure capable of enriching and challenging our understanding of games and what they are capable of. To that end we are seeking submissions that exemplify the virtues of critical play, including those that demonstrate the extensibility of game scholarship and the value of alternative interpretations. More specifically, we are looking for unique and diverse perspectives that may be underrepresented in gaming media, as well as those that exist between the more industry-driven journalistic view and the more traditional academic position. FPS publishes articles in three broad categories. ESSAYS: Essay submissions for FPS are meant to address critical, theoretical, and methodological considerations as they pertain to game studies. Will shifting geopolitical alliances have an impact on internet policy in Ukraine or Armenia? What is the impact of economic factors on internet policy in those countries? What role does civil society play? On March 8, we will bring together scholars interested in answering those questions. We think it is particularly important to research internet policies in countries, which are at the borders of large geopolitical systems. At the periphery of the global system, internet policy is often not so strongly institutionalised as a result of which human rights norms are more in flux. At this workshop, we want to take a closer look at internet polices in the Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. Torn between two large geopolitical block, those six countries are very vulnerable to the growing mistrust between Brussels and Moscow. Strong trade and investment links to both Russia and Europe force them to make decisions, which can be politically hard and economically costly. Internet policy is one of the areas most affected by competing human rights discourses and trade interests. Our working hypothesis is that geopolitics will affect how Internet policy is developed, but can be mitigated by other economic or social factors, such as the strength of actors from private sector or civil society. The workshop will be divided into four thematic blocks: Internet policy in Eastern Partnership: While there might be similarities across the six countries, each of them has a unique landscape of internet policies and distinct process of developing them. How is internet policy actually made in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine? Keynote: Professor Andrii Paziuk, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Geopolitics and Internet Governance. In global debates about internet policy, the EU has strongly backed the multistakeholder model, while Russia has been one of the strongest supporters of a multilateral model, which emphasises sovereignty of states. Will shifting geopolitical alliances have an impact on internet policy in countries like Armenia or the Ukraine? Speaker: Dr. Andrea Calderaro, Cardiff University. Civil Society and Human Rights: NGOs and experts who participate in Internet policy-development are often highly interconnected on the global level. They belong to ‘communities of practice’ serving as mediators of norms and practices between the global and national policy levels. This year’s conference asks how contexts affect how we design communication experiences. For example, How have communication design practices evolved to meet the needs of new contexts/audiences? How has UX design evolved to respond to technology used in multiple contexts? How does mobile use (checking mobile devices while riding in a car, cooking dinner, walking around town, etc.) affect how we communicate and use information? Industry and academic researchers (including graduate and undergraduate students) are encouraged to submit research papers, experience reports, and posters. Contributions may include studies of design processes, research methods, pedagogical practices, deployment analyses, and situated-use studies related to the design and use of communication systems and artifacts. SIGDOC will be located in Arlington, Virginia, right outside Washington, DC September 21-23, 2016. *Submission process* First, short proposals (500 words) will be submitted for review. Once a proposal is reviewed and accepted, the author(s) will submit either: · a full-length paper (research and technical papers or experience reports; final papers are not to exceed 10 pages), or · an extended abstract (posters and panels; final abstracts are not to exceed 6 pages). The full-length papers and extended abstracts will then be reviewed, sent back to the authors for final edits and ACM formatting, and resubmitted as “camera-ready” submissions. Papers and extended abstracts will be published in the Conference Proceedings and in the ACM Digital Library. Last reminder - Call for Papers: Network Standards and Culture (AOIR 2016 Panel)

Hi everyone, This is a last reminder calling panelists for an #AOIR2016 panel Robert W. Gehl and I are organizing on the relationship between network standards and culture. By 'standards' we (broadly) mean technical rules, laws, and norms of technical features/infrastructure/objects related to media technologies, that are constructed by various individual/private/government/NGO actors. We are particularly interested in papers that articulate these rules with cultural practices within and through digital media. To be considered for this panel, we would need the AOIR-standard 1200-word abstract by *February 5, 2016* sent to e.carmi(a)gold.ac.uk.
