CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2016 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of: Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Lois Scheidt, Indiana University, Bloomington Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should be in English and not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top paper will receive Couch Award to be presented at the 2016 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) in Berlin, Germany. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US and the author will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, October 6-8, 2016 in Berlin. Carey Media Research Award. Welcome are works on topics that were central to Carey's scholarship. Submissions might focus on technology, time, space and communication, the nature of public life, the relation between journalism and popular culture ‑‑ among others ‑‑ taking these themes in new or different directions. Applications will be evaluated based on engagement with Carey's approaches and concepts, originality, and advancement of knowledge. Call for Papers: Cunning Knowledge and Media Technologies *Platform: Journal of Media and Communication* http://platformjmc.com An interdisciplinary journal for early career researchers and graduate students Volume editor: Christopher O’Neill Abstract submissions due: *5th of March, 2016* Full paper submissions due: *20th of May, 2016* Everyone is on the side of the cunning. Media, communications, and cultural studies scholars have increasingly come to identify resistance with the alacrity of Michel de Certeau’s walker, with the trickster whose clever ‘tactics’ always outwit the lumbering stupidities of state power and its ‘strategies’. Cunning knowledge comes from below, it is popular, it resists codification and iteration, it responds to a given exigency *in the moment*, it is defined by a certain *disposition*. Cunning belongs to those who, in a state of lack, are driven to subvert majoritarian institutions and ways of thinking. Theorists including Michel de Certeau, Guy Debord, Sarah Kofman, Carlo Ginzburg, Donna Haraway, Marcel Detienne, Jean-Pierre Vernant, Gilbert Simondon, and François Jullien have celebrated the capacity for cunning to undermine instrumental or otherwise reductive conceptions of knowledge. But what happens when even the largest organs of state and corporate power self-consciously seek to recuperate the power of the cunning for their own ends? In Hesiod we read that Zeus swallowed the Greek goddess of cunning Metis, for “fear that she might bring forth a thunderbolt stronger than his own”. Analogously, Google has produced “a kind of cunning world-wide-web-weaving”, Dan Mellamphy has argued in a previous issue of *Platform*, it has “swallowed-up the ruse and intelligence of the internet” by crafting a powerful, emergent, yet unstable archive, a bottom-up form of administrative knowledge. Furthermore, the distinction Certeau makes between the prescriptive spatial grammar of urban strategists, and the colloquial *détournements* made by walkers, seems less secure today, as pattern-of-life spatial analytics attempt to grasp the movement of the city *in motion*, with all its associated rhythms and cadences. This issue of *Platform* seeks papers which engage with the question: What does ‘cunning’ signify today in the technological realm? Does cunning still belong to those who lack power, or are the powerful today so powerful that they lack not even lack? As the qualities associated with cunning, such as adaptation, induction, speed, and resilience become adopted as normative values in finance and statecraft, does cunning still possess the capacity to disrupt (disruption itself perhaps now holding dubious critical efficacy), or is there a need to consider new modes of critique, ‘new weapons’, perhaps a reappraisal of the neglected virtues of slowness, deliberation, even stasis? *Platform* seeks papers on all aspects related to cunning and media & technology, including but not limited to: -Hunting techniques (the venatic) & (state) surveillance, drones, etc. -The relation between witchcraft, alchemy, sorcery, and modern technoscience -Cunning as a gendered knowledge -Cunning as an aspect of neo-liberal subjectivity -Cunning and lack, aporia, poverty -Cunning and medical technologies (e.g., health tracking technologies) -Cunning as an embodied knowledge, its relation to gesture -The relation between mimesis, trickery, and online self-identity and self-representation -The relation between haptic media and cunning techniques of sleight-of-hand (prestidigitation) -Cross cultural conceptions of cunning (e.g., comparing *metis*, *zhi*, etc.) -The relation between fortune-telling, soothsaying techniques, and predictive analytics -Cunning and design/craft -Cunning and approaches to ‘queering’ normative knowledge practices -Cunning and its relation to temporality and speed -The relation between cunning and other forms of knowledge (e.g., *phronesis*, *sophia*, etc.) Please send all enquiries and submissions to platformjmc(a)gmail.com. The department of Media and Culture Studies provides education, and conducts research, in the fields of film, television, games, new media and digital culture, visual arts, theatre, dance and performance, gender and postcolonialism, music and cultural policies. Culture is a dynamic mix of artistic, creative and everyday practices with which people shape their identities and actions, and within which societal structures and institutions themselvestake shape. Media (both old and new) are crucial factors in these processes. The Graduate Gender Program (GGeP) is located within the department of Media and Culture Studies. Scholars from the various research groups in Media and Culture Studies liaise extensivelytogether in order to explore different facets of the roles played by gender, ethnicity, art, culture, and media in contemporary society. Gender Studiesresearch focuses on processes of in- and exclusion and diversity expressed throughout a broad range of media,cultural and artistic performances, all of which are studied within their particularintermedial contexts. Job Description We are currently seeking: A candidate whose research both supports and enhances the three strands of our existing research program 'Doing Gender: Media, Art and Politics' encompassing: 1. I am designing a study to examine self-censorship among social media users in the context of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). As noted by Dr. Eric Freedman (Michigan State University) that scholars barely scratched the surface of studying the former Soviet Union Central Asian countries.
