Janet Sternberg’s point that people don’t search carefully and therefore miss key references means we need to think about how to make our research searchable - we need to use the most likely search terms in titles and abstracts of our publications. The first time I was recommended to do this was in 2014, and the publisher said that deliberate use of likely search terms makes a huge difference in how many people actually find books and book chapters. This is a rather different way of thinking about how to title academic work than we are used to, but one we should definitely be aware of. Of course, we should also teach our students to search better, using related terms and seeing what is referenced by other scholars on the topic. Also: we should all deliberately make sure to cite women and people of colour in all our work. For the last few years, I have carefully looked at my references as I write, and if there isn’t a pretty even gender balance, I search harder to find women writing about the topic. I use Google Scholar most, but I also ask other women in related areas if they know of other women I should be aware of. I have ALWAYS found more women when I specifically search, and they are usually doing fabulous stuff that has been really helpful to my own work. And often they do not pop up when you first start to explore an area. Not digging deeper means missing out on really valuable work. Thanks everyone for the helpful (though depressing) pointers. I've also wondered too about syllabus/syllabi and if anyone has studied gender and courses. I am currently the undergraduate program director for my dept right now and I approve courses that students take outside of McGill and do so by judging the syllabi. I always count female vs male authors/academics and it is always deeply lopsided. It is all of course all very informal but it is rather consistent. This public event presents a new perspective on migration and media based on interview research with Singaporean university students in Melbourne. It brings together stakeholders in the media industry and international education sector who are influencers among Singaporean students in Australia, to discuss the key issues that arise with the ongoing transformation of media and internationalisation of education, with particular reference to the case of Singaporean students in Australia. We think it is particularly important to research internet policies in countries, which are at the borders of large geopolitical systems. At the periphery of the global system, internet policy is often not so strongly institutionalised as a result of which human rights norms are more in flux. At this workshop, we want to take a closer look at internet polices in the Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. Torn between two large geopolitical block, those six countries are very vulnerable to the growing mistrust between Brussels and Moscow. Strong trade and investment links to both Russia and Europe force them to make decisions, which can be politically hard and economically costly. Internet policy is one of the areas most affected by competing human rights discourses and trade interests. Our working hypothesis is that geopolitics will affect how Internet policy is developed, but can be mitigated by other economic or social factors, such as the strength of actors from private sector or civil society. This workshop is organized by the Centre for the Internet and Human Rights in collaboration with the B/ORDERS IN MOTION Centre, both at European University Viadrina. We welcome original, and principled research papers addressing both the theory and practice of UMAP and papers showcasing innovative use of UMAP and exploring the benefits and challenges of applying UMAP technology in real-life applications and contexts. Authors will be asked to indicate one or more key areas (from the five listed below) at the time of submission. Submissions should be made into one of two categories - long and short papers as defined below. Long papers (8 pages + references) should present original reports of substantive new research techniques, findings, and applications of UMAP. They should place the work within the field and clearly indicate innovative aspects. Research procedures and technical methods should be presented in sufficient detail to ensure scrutiny and reproducibility. Results should be clearly communicated and implications of the contributions/findings for UMAP and beyond should be explicitly discussed. Short papers (4 pages + references) should present original and highly promising research or applications. Merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance rather than maturity, extensive technical validation, and user studies, although some form of validation is desirable. Maintaining the high quality and impact of the UMAP series, each paper will be single-blind reviewed by three program committee members and meta-reviewed to present the reviewersí consensual view; the review process will be coordinated by the program chairs in collaboration with the corresponding area chairs. Separation of long and short papers will be strictly enforced so papers will not compete across categories but within each category. Papers that receive high scores and are considered promising by reviewers, but didnít make the acceptance cut, will be invited to be resubmitted as posters and/or demos. It publishes books that critically study the role of the Internet, digital and social media in society and make critical interventions. We invite submissions of book proposals that fall into the scope of the series. The books in the series are published in an open access format available online without payment using a Creative Commons licence (CC-BY-NC-ND) and simultaneously as affordable paperbacks. We are able to publish a number of books in the call without any book processing charges thanks to support by the University of Westminster Library.
