From the private to the public, from personal relationships to the economy and political movements we are witnessing a great transformation whose magnitude is similar to the one brought in the 19th century by capitalism and industrialization. But what do the different changes brought by digital technology share in common? What is the overarching logic guiding the digital transformation of society? And is it changing society for better or worse? We will discuss these issues with a number of leading scholars in the field of digital culture: Tim Jordan is Professor and Head of School of Media, Film and Music at Sussex University. He is the author of a number of influential books including Cyberpower: The Culture and Politics of Cyberspace and the Internet (1999), Activism!: direct action, hacktivism and the future of society (2002), and Information Politics (2015). Joanna Zylinska is a writer, lecturer, artist and curator, working in the areas of new technologies and new media, ethics, photography and art. She is Professor of New Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is the author of a number of influential books including Life after New Media (2012/ with Sarah Kember) and The Cyborg Experiments (2002). Mark Coté is a leading researcher in the social, cultural, political and economic dimensions of big data. He has received numerous research grants from the AHRC and EU-Horizon 2020 as both PI and CI, partnering with the Open Data Institute, British Library, Aarhus University, the University of Pisa and many others. His work has been published widely across leading journals including Big Data & Society. Mercedes Bunz is a German art historian, philosopher and journalist. She has worked as the technology correspondent for the Guardian and is currently senior lecturer journalism and digital media, University of Westminster and has been involved in digital publishing and open access project. She is the author of The Silent Revolution: How Digitalization Transforms Knowledge, Work, Journalism and Politics without Making Too Much Noise (2014). Following his study, he argues that a focus on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram does little to explain what we post on social media. Instead, the key to understanding how people in an English village use social media is to appreciate just how ‘English’ their usage has become. He introduces the ‘Goldilocks Strategy’: how villagers use social media to calibrate precise levels of interaction ensuring that each relationship is neither too cold nor too hot, but ‘just right’. He explores the consequences of social media for groups ranging from schoolchildren through to the patients of a hospice, and he compares these connections to more traditional forms of association such as the church and the neighbourhood. Above all, Miller finds an extraordinary clash between new social media that bridges the private and the public domains, and an English sensibility that is all about keeping these two domains separate. The town is inhabited mainly by Sunni Muslim Arabs and Kurds, and has been transformed in recent years by urbanisation, neoliberalism and political events. Elisabetta Costa uses her 15 months of ethnographic research to explain why public- facing social media is more conservative than offline life. Yet, at the same time, social media has opened up unprecedented possibilities for private communications between genders and in relationships among young people – Costa reveals new worlds of intimacy, love and romance. She also discovers that, when viewed from the perspective of people’s everyday lives, political participation on social media looks very different to how it is portrayed in studies of political postings separated from their original complex, and highly socialised, context. Dunn This volume assembles relevant research focusing on ICTs in Latin America and the Caribbean. Regarding Latin America, the mobile broadband revolution is taking place in Latin America. Despite various constraints faced by Latin American countries, the spread of mobile telephony and broadband Internet has reached very high levels even among low-income populations. However about half of the continent’s population remains unconnected, and the benefits of connectivity have been slow to materialize. Submissions may examine any aspect of the theme of digital divide in Latin America and the politics of digital inclusion. We welcome submissions on different dimensions of the theme such as mobile youth identities, technology affordability, school transformation by digital media, the diffusion of e-commerce platforms and digital technology in SMEs. We are interested in submissions that address theoretical and/or methodological issues on the topic. The Caribbean region reflects perhaps the greatest cultural, geographical and linguistic diversity in the Western hemisphere. It consists of large and small states with English, French, Spanish, Dutch and Indian cultural backgrounds, and in some instances offer a combination of several languages and varied traditions. Because of historical links with Africa, Europe and other metropoles and the region's proximity to the United States and Latin America, the Caribbean has developed a cosmopolitan reputation, enhanced in some parts by an active tourism sector and openness to diverse external influences. One such is the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on practices of governance, business operation, education and civic life among other areas. Although surveys conducted in Jamaica and other parts of the region reflect an almost ubiquitous access to the mobile phone, there remains a prevailing high percentage of exclusion from high speed broadband technologies and from Internet-based content, particularly among sections of rural populations, the urban poor and persons with disabilities. How can these issues of exclusion be addressed in small island developing states such as those in the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, or in countries experiencing conditions of severe economic challenge such as in Haiti, or in more buoyant but still emerging economies of countries like Barbados, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic? Volume 12 in the proposed new editions by Emerald seeks to address ICTs and the Politics of Inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean. This timely publication will provide an opportunity to share on-going research and analysis of the subject, not only on Latin America, but also on the Caribbean, including such countries as Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, St Lucia, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Potential contributors would examine not only issues of access but also areas of content, policy and size. The potential contributions would also explore the differentiated effects of ICT technology use on various demographic groups including youth, the elderly, men and women. The gender dimension would also factor into strategies for ICT adoption and emerging forms of broadband uses across different population groups. Consistent with the Call By Emerald, chapters which also address research-related methodological and theoretical issues would also be invited as part of the contributions from the Caribbean region. VOLUME 13: Brazil: Media from the Country of the Future This volume assembles research on any aspect of Brazilian media and communication in its various forms. The parameters are set as broadly as possible as long as the research speaks to a facet of the topic as defined in the call for submissions. Submissions may be empirical, theoretical, or methodological--using any method or approach. The volume aims to encompass research on emergent phenomena, as well as studies with a historical or longitudinal dimension. Social media tools have helped break down geographical barriers that once restricted communication and have led to an explosion of e-participation, virtual presence, and online communities. Professional benefits of social media include sharing of information, publicity, and giving and receiving support and advice. Consumers have become increasingly empowered to exert an influence on brands through online communities and businesses are able to acquire rapid feedback and garner insight into individual preferences without observer effects. Analysis of social media content via automated techniques and systems can also help to safeguard society from organized crime but such uses remain a delicate issue. With seemingly endless benefits it is easy to overlook the disadvantages of social media, which are an increasingly important consideration as social media platforms continue to proliferate. Social media has facilitated a loss of ownership and control of content as private, public and institutional domains increasingly overlap. There is a need for careful balancing of professionalism and freedom of speech, to ensure that posts do not cause offence or harm reputations. Other drawbacks include time pressure, plagiarism, misrepresentation, addiction, and negative psychological consequences. While providing a means to protect public safety, social media also provides a means of threatening it and enabling new forms of cyber-crime. This conference aims to bring together a variety of disciplines and a community for the advancement of knowledge regarding the adoption, use, impact, and potential of social media. Law and copyright in particular have developed and adapted in response to innovations in reproduction and dissemination technologies, creating access control as an artificial corrective. Technical standards and the extension of exclusive rights have been conceived independently, leading to tensions between cultural industries and rights of the public. But they can also lead to the constitution of commons. The book offers a techno-legal model of regulation for the sharing of culture. Following research on “lex informatica”, it is based on the mutual influence between law and code. It proposes a reconception of copyright categories to facilitate creative usages and non-market sharing, and an improved technical expression of those rights built on the systematic analysis of licenses and ontologies. As foreword author Lawrence Lessig summarizes: "The law could infect code, carrying its values". The golems, artificial creatures of the mythology, designate pieces of computer code that prevent to copy and reuse works online. Developed by right holders to protect their interests, they implement decisions automatically and indiscriminately , without control by the society, the state or the law, without distinguishing legitimate uses. But the golems can turn against their masters and create resistance. Beyond access to information and culture that is the subject of this book, the metaphor turns powerful to denounce the logic of encoding binary rules in the digital devices and algorithms that govern our lives and make decisions based on big data and traces we leave on networks, platforms, connected objects and smart cities. This book is grounded on over ten years of participation to copyright legal and technical regulation on the field.
