As the media sector is in flux, many challenges and opportunities will be addressed in this symposium. The symposium will be held in the University of Oslo, Norway, where the first symposium was held in 2012. The focus of the Media Innovations symposium is on evolutions and trends in the different media sectors. We aim to explore how changing technologies, and changing modes of usage and engagement with media bring about innovation and transformation of the media industry. The symposium will be in two parts: An industry session and an academic session, both covering innovations in all media sectors. LaTex for writing a PhD

Dear all, I was wondering if you had any suggestions for a LaTeX editor? I just started with my dissertation (resp. its writing) and want to try LaTex instead of fighting with Word formatting. Any experience would be helpful especially with regards to "academic work" (citation, footnotes, etc.), because there are a lot of editors out there... I'd prefer an offline version that has a lively community (resp. whose programmers still work on its improvements). I'm currently working with Citavi (so it should best capable of dealing with the literature list it produces). Also using MaxQda (even though I don't think this will matter with regards to LaTex). And, once in a while, I want to export a chapter for my supervisors (not only a PDF but maybe also a DOC or OpenOffice or something like this, so that they can easily add comments). Nominations for the Holberg Prize (€538,000/$735,000)

Nominations are due June 15 for the Holberg Prize, an annual award to a scholar who has made outstanding contributions to research in the arts and humanities, social science, law or theology. I would love to see an internet researcher win this significant award. Nominations can be sent in by any scholar who holds a position at a university, anywhere in the world. All you have to do is write a maximum of one page, and attach a CV for the scholar you are nominating. Previous prizes have gone to Julia Kristeva, Jürgen Habermas, Manuel Castells, Bruno Latour, Marina Warner, Steven Greenblatt and others. Not enough women have received the prize, so I’d especially recommend nominating women. There’s also a specification that they would like more nominations of scholars younger than 70, although looking at the list of laureates obviously age isn’t an absolute criteria. The objective of the prize is to increase awareness of the value of academic scholarship within the arts, humanities, social sciences, law and theology. The Prize amounts to 4.5 million Norwegian kroner (approximately €538,000 or $735,000). Dear AoIRists, I'm pleased to call your attention to an impressive new resource in internet research ethics - "Networked Systems Ethics," compiled by by Ben Zevenbergen <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/?id=281> at the Oxford Internet Institute <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/> as part of an Open Technology Fund Fellowship: <https://www.opentech.fund/> <http://networkedsystemsethics.net/> Ben graciously acknowledges the contributions of the AoIR ethics guidelines as well as a good number of AoIRists. But this work draws from several other research communities whose foci turn on the internet one way or another as well - most especially computing / networking technologies professionals with strong ethical interests and expertise. In these ways, the document serves as both a fine primer and a significant new resource. I strongly commend the document to anyone seeking practical and well-informed guidance in how to approach many of the ethical challenges presented by internet-facilitated research. The document will also be a very valuable resource for those of us who seek to continue reflection and dialogue on these ethical issues in more theoretical directions as well. Book announcement: Discursive self in microblogging

It might be interesting to those of you who research the issues of identity formation online and/or teach classes on linguistics of CMC. The book reports on a three and a half year study which complemented a 20,000 word corpus of tweets with semi-structured interviews and participant observation. It deals with two main questions: how users exploit the linguistic resources at their disposal to build a certain identity, and how the community boundaries are performed discursively. The focus is on the speech acts of self-praise and complaint, and on the storytelling practices of microbloggers. The comprehensive treatment of the speech act theory and the social psychological approaches to self-disclosure provides a stepping stone to the analysis of identity work, for which the users draw on two distinctive interpretive repertoires – affiliative and self-promoting. The following is an initial description of each group’s project: 1) Environmental initiative – Participants will examine the Des Voeux Road Central Initiative (DVRC, http://www.dvrc.hk/ <http://www.dvrc.hk/>), an on-going project of the Hong Kong Clean Air Network. The aim is to create a pedestrian and tram precinct in Hong Kong’s central business district, while promoting sustainable lifestyle and reducing air pollution. (2) Labor advocacy – This team will focus on the UNIQLO campaign launched by Students and Scholars against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM, http://sacom.hk/ <http://sacom.hk/>), a key NGO in Hong Kong engaging in international labor activism. Using a combination of social media channels to raise public awareness, the campaign targets the largest Japanese fast-fashion company whose subcontractors abused Chinese textile workers. (3) Social enterprise – Participants in this group will analyze music data provided by Aivvy (http://www.aivvy.com/ <http://www.aivvy.com/>), a tech startup that boasts the world’s first smart music technology platform. More than a consumer electronics company, Aivvy aims to foster social good by connecting less well-known musicians with potential listeners using innovative device and algorithms. (4) Politics and democracy – The 2016 Hong Kong Legislative Election will take place on September 4. Several of Hong Kong’s most experienced public opinion researchers will conduct a new project covering the election. This group of participants will study Facebook profiles of the candidates and citizens’ online discussion in ways that shall inform the election study from new, social media angles. Prior to joining the Summit, we will send learning materials (e.g., readings, videos, software) to admitted participants, who are supposed to go through the materials and start to get familiarized with the analytical tools and methodological issues. In the morning of Aug 22 Monday, we will hear presentations by experts from each of the four social organizations mentioned above with regard to the project context, major questions at stake, the most relevant data, and the research needs on the ground. Then for the following five days (August 22-27), participants need to work with trainers to decide on their analytical strategies, complete data analysis, and prepare for public presentation in the afternoon of Aug 27 Saturday.
