CFP HICSS Minitrack Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science (HICSS) January 4-7, 2017, Big Island, Hawaii, USA Kauai, Hawaii, USA http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/ Papers Due: June 15, 2016 This minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. Globalization has historically been tied to technological innovation, and the present era of a networked information society is no different. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided the infrastructure for multinational businesses, created new cultural connections irrespective of geographic boundaries and distances, and allowed an increasingly mobile global population to be connected to their friends, families, and cultures no matter where they are. The issues surrounding global, international, and cross cultural issues in Information Systems (IS) attracted much scholarly attention and have been explored under myriad contexts. In line with the track recognition that the Internet has transformed the way we work, learn, and play, our minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. The minitrack welcomes submissions that relate to all aspects of global IS, or IS research situated in a global, international or cross-cultural context. The minitrack is open to all methodological approaches and perspectives. We are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. We will hold a workshop in London on Monday 27th June to present findings of our research and discuss their implications. Hello... I wondered if someone on this list was able to capture all of Microsoft's Tay bot's tweets and mentions from the time it went live until it was shut down, March 23-24? I did not get my collector setup in time, so I am looking for someone who collected Tay's original tweets and mentions, and who would be willing to share them. irb approach to data like panama papers / wikileaks / etc?

Hi, for a study I'm doing I was wondering if people on this list might could contact me offline at (kalev.leetaru5(a)gmail.com) with any pointers or personal experiences of how their IRBs are addressing the issue of academic research using data from data breaches. Ie, the Panama Papers, Wikileaks, the Sony emails, Ashley Madison data, and any of the myriad other datasets now floating around. Researchers from several major US institutions I've spoken with thus far have shared IRB approval forms with me that show their particular IRBs accepting the argument that any data, no matter how sensitive, which can be downloaded openly from the web, is accepted as "public domain" and falls under an IRB exemption of existing public data. In particular, the IRB approvals I've seen accepted that any personally identifying information in the datasets, no matter how sensitive, is exempted due to its being public access now. I'm thus extremely curious whether this is a general trend and how other IRBs are treating the use of hacked datasets which are widely accessible online. In an era in which academic researchers can easily access with a few mouseclicks breached medical records to password archives to sexual preferences to financial statements to just about any kind of dataset you can imagine, there are all kinds of questions around whether those datasets should be available for academic research and I'm curious how IRBs are leaning right now. I realize there are a myriad professional ethics guidelines out there put forward by the various professional societies, but from browsing recent journal issues from a cross-section of fields including the social, information, and computer sciences, I've turned up countless papers using breached datasets, and those papers in fields that traditionally use IRBs have all claimed full IRB approval, while I've found in the computer sciences that few of the researchers I've spoken with thus far have either heard of the IRB or believe that their research is subject to IRB. Thus, my main interest is really at the institutional level - how are IRBs and universities handling the issue of their scholars using data from breaches like Wikileaks, Panama Papers, Sony emails, breaches from government agencies, etc? I'm also interested for those of you who are journal editors or who have gone through that process, how do you handle the issue of whether to publish a paper using something like Wikileaks data and, *in particular* how do you handle the issue of hosting portions of the breached data in the replication archive of your journal's website? I know this can be a deeply impassioned area of discourse and for my particular study I'm *solely* focused on how institutions, especially IRBs and also journals, are currently handling the issue of breached data like Wikileaks/Panama Papers/etc in academic publications. *Culture and politics of data visualisation: a one-day conference, 11th October 2016, University of Sheffield* * *As data become more and more abundant, the main way that most people get access to them is through their visualisation. To date, much academic research about data visualisation has focused on individualistic and micro-level factors like memorability and speed of comprehension and has not attended to the social, cultural, political work that visualisations do, the contexts in which they circulate, and the mutually constitutive relationships between visualisations and their contexts. More recently, critical perspectives have begun to emerge, which point to the ways in which visualisations can privilege certain viewpoints, perpetuate existing power relations or create new ones, and play a role in the generation and modification of knowledge, cognition, perceptions of objectivity and opaque forms of governance and control. These critiques exist alongside the apparently contradictory belief that data visualisations are a way of 'doing good with data', making data transparent and accessible and so enabling greater inclusion in data-driven conversations and societies. This one-day conference addresses the culture and politics of data visualisation, brings critical thought into dialogue with the practice and potential of visualising data and considers how they might inform each other. In this way, it is neither a 'show & tell' nor a critique of datavis as ideologically implicated, but a space for productive exchange between critical thinking and datavis practice. We invite you to join us to consider these questions: * How do data visualisations get made, used, circulated and consumed, and what are the implications of these processes for society, culture and politics? * What problems and opportunities does the spread of data visualisation bring with it? * To what extent do data visualisations get used in the interests of power or to act against power? * How can the belief that visualisation makes data transparent and accessible be brought together productively with critiques of visualisation-as-control? * How should we account for the affective dimensions of data visualisation? * How can visualisation be used in socially useful ways? * What does critically-informed, reflective data visusalisation look like? We invite participants to submit their own visualisations for presentation in an exhibition at the conference. Archiving Facebook Group Posts

Hello, I am a Master's student in sociology at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. I am currently working on research involving a Facebook group as a sort of virtual ethnography. I was wondering if anyone knew of any researchers who work with archiving Facebook group discussions. I am looking for a way to better facilitate the archiving of my data, as I planned on creating a corpus based on 6 months of discussions within the Facebook group.
