Building on the success of mobile, wearables (watches, smart clothing, clinical-grade bands, fitness trackers, VR) are the next generation of technologies offering not only new communication opportunities, but more importantly, new ways to understand ourselves, our health, our learning, and personal and organizational knowledge development. Wearables hold promise to greatly improve personal learning and the performance of teams and collaborative knowledge building through advanced data collection. For example, predictive models and learner profiles currently use log and clickstream data. Wearables capture a range of physiological and contextual data that can increase the sophistication of those models and improve learner self-awareness, regulation, and performance. When combined with existing data such as social media and learning management systems, sophisticated awareness of individual and collaborative activity can be obtained. Wearables are developing quickly, including hardware such as fitness trackers, clothing, earbuds, contact lens and software, notably for integration of data sets and analysis. The 2016 aWEAR (awear.interlab.me) conference is the first international wearables in learning and education conference. It will be held at Stanford University and provide researchers and attendees with an overview of how these tools are being developed, deployed, and researched. Attendees will have opportunities to engage with different wearable technologies, explore various data collection practices, and evaluate case studies where wearables have been deployed. Conference audience =================== This conference will appeal to individuals in K-12, higher education, corporate learning, and existing technology companies, including startups. In addition to sharing emerging research, the conference will take a hands-on approach to exploring wearable technologies, including pilot and prototype developments. AoIR 2016 Doctoral Colloquium

This is a reminder that applications for the AoIR 2016 doctoral colloquium are open and due on or before 15 June 2016. The colloquium offers PhD students working in Internet research or related fields a one day forum to be convened on 5 October 2016. For many years, this pre-conference event has provided students with the opportunity to spend a concentrated amount of time with senior scholars to share research projects, address methodological and theoretical challenges, and exchange informal advice on juggling the multiple pressures associated with job searching, publishing, and finishing the dissertation. As always we will have excellent mentors in place. Karine Nahon, Susanna Paasonen, Annette Markham, Sharif Mowlabocus and Zizi Papacharrisi are already signed up and we are sure to have some more great people join them. To apply for a place at the consortium, please provide: a) a two-page summary of your research. This should provide a context for the research, describe the methods being used, the progress to date, and primary concerns and issues; b) A brief statement indicating why you want to participate in this doctoral colloquium and what you hope to get out of it. Also note that, in order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available conference fee waivers and partial travel stipends ($500) per year. Conference scholarships are made available to participants who have had papers accepted via the peer review process for the main conference, and applications are due on 1 June 2016. Core contributions typically take the form of insightful findings, evolved theories, models, concepts, or methods, such as games improving well-being of older adults, TV gesture to improve TV watching experience etc. - Specific application areas: This topic will include papers that extend the design and understanding of applications for older adult user group. Example of application areas can be health, home, accessibility, gerontology, sustainability, ICT4D, data visualization, social computing and computer-supported collaborative work, and visual analytics. - Human factors: This topic will focus on papers on practice of designing products, systems, or processes to take proper account of the interaction between interactive systems and the old people who use them. - Input and Interactions: This topic focuses on new interaction techniques, technologies, and devices for input and output. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: sensing, actuation, unconventional UIs, touch and multi-touch, 3D interaction, augmented/mixed/virtual reality, mobile interaction, novel displays, and devices of different sizes and configurations. - Usability and user experience: This topic is suitable for works that extend the knowledge, practices, methods, components, and tools that make technology more useful, usable, and desirable. It expects significant works on the basis of their demonstrable potential for effective reuse and applicability across a range of application domains or across a range of design, research, and older user communities. Although we are interested in papers on the effects of various theories, technologies, software, or algorithms on ageing population interaction experience, technical contributions without clear indications of the impact on aged people are not within the scope of ITAP. SUBMISSION TYPES We encourage the following research submission types: PAPERS Full Papers are intended to report stable and completed research. Papers will be 4-10 pages and will undergo a peer review process. Submitted full papers should follow the ACM CHI paper. Accepted papers, after presented to the symposium, will be published in ACM Digital Library. The authors of selected oral presentations will be invited to a special issue of the International SCI- or EI- indexed Journal after further revision. Please note that there is no requirement to anonymize paper submissions and at least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the symposium. We have selected a program committee of experts in human-computer interaction and ageing people to lead the formal review process. Once your paper is submitted, it will undergo a double-blind peer review process. Each paper will be reviewed by three program committee members. If review scores fall below a threshold, the paper will be rejected. Authors of accepted paper will then be recommended to make certain changes before the camera-ready submission and acceptance might be tentative until those changes are included. POSTERS This is a juried submission track that allows attendees to showcase early, relatively speculative or not yet completed work so that others can know what they are doing. Authors are required to submit a 1-page poster paper including author information and a description of the study. Note that: 1. The poster size should be A0 (84.1 x 118.4cm, 33.11 x 46.61 inches). 2. A small desk can be provided on request. 3. There is no AC power supply for poster presenters. Please also note that there is no requirement to anonymize poster submissions and at least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the symposium. Yuk Hui For a Realism of Relations: The Case of Digital Objects 17 June 3pm - 5pm, Birkbeck Cinema The Vasari Research Centre for Art and Technology at Birkbeck is pleased to welcome Yuk Hui on 17 June, 2016. In this talk, Yuk Hui will discuss his recent book On the Existence of Digital Objects, which is an investigation of digital objects in light of the proliferation of computational ontologies, and situates this phenomenon within both the history of philosophy and computation. This central thesis of the book is to develop a theory of relations in order to understand objects and to politicize the existence of digital objects, by drawing from Simondon, Heidegger and Husserl.
