Building on the success of mobile, wearables (watches, smart clothing, clinical-grade bands, fitness trackers, VR) are the next generation of technologies offering not only new communication opportunities, but more importantly, new ways to understand ourselves, our health, our learning, and personal and organizational knowledge development. Wearables hold promise to greatly improve personal learning and the performance of teams and collaborative knowledge building through advanced data collection. For example, predictive models and learner profiles currently use log and clickstream data. Wearables capture a range of physiological and contextual data that can increase the sophistication of those models and improve learner self-awareness, regulation, and performance. When combined with existing data such as social media and learning management systems, sophisticated awareness of individual and collaborative activity can be obtained. Wearables are developing quickly, including hardware such as fitness trackers, clothing, earbuds, contact lens and software, notably for integration of data sets and analysis. The 2016 aWEAR (awear16.interlab.me) conference is the first international wearables in learning and education conference. It will be held at Stanford University and provide researchers and attendees with an overview of how these tools are being developed, deployed, and researched. Attendees will have opportunities to engage with different wearable technologies, explore various data collection practices, and evaluate case studies where wearables have been deployed. Conference audience =================== This conference will appeal to individuals in K-12, higher education, corporate learning, and existing technology companies, including startups. In addition to sharing emerging research, the conference will take a hands-on approach to exploring wearable technologies, including pilot and prototype developments. Vanaskie Circuit Judge for The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit <applewebdata://7452E21F-90FE-4865-9138-B1C5C4EFE84D#_ftn1> [1] A by-invitation experts' workshop to be held at George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs September 28-29, 2016 The security of information networks and databases is now a critical element of national security and economic competitiveness. Rapid growth in e-commerce, banking, and communication systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) has increased efficiency and driven economic growth, but by necessity these systems preclude consumers' control over how and where their data are collected, archived and processed. Recent high-profile breaches of security at banks and retailers, coupled with secret and not-so-secret efforts by foreign governments and rogue actors to attack critical information infrastructures, have heightened these concerns. Legal and policy responses to the cybersecurity challenge are just as important as technological ones. To focus much-needed attention on this field of study, the IIP invites authors to submit abstracts by July 25, 2016 addressing the policy and legal aspects of information security, privacy, data protection, cybersecurity-related legislation, and critical cyber-infrastructure protection. Authors of the selected papers will be invited to present and discuss them during a 2 day by-invitation-only experts workshop held at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs on September 28-29 (Wed.-Thu.), 2016. Each paper will be assigned a respondent recruited from the local academic/policy/advocacy communities and will be allotted a full hour for presentation, response and discussion. A reception and formal dinner provide room for social interaction. This year the workshop is privileged and grateful to have United States Court of Appeals Circuit Judge Thomas I. Vanaskie in attendance and as Keynote Speaker. Judge Vanaskie is one of the leading and most prominent federal jurists in developing the United States Courts' information and technology policies. Prior to his appointment to the Third Circuit, Judge Vanaskie was appointed by the U.S. President to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, where he served for 16 years, seven of those years as Chief Judge. In 2005, the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist appointed Judge Vanaski to serve as Chair of the Judicial Conference Information Technology Committee, where he served until 2008. Judge Vanaskie presently serves on the Third Circuit Judicial Council's Information Technology Committee. The Judge is also presently appointed to serve on the Space and Facilities Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the policy-making body for all of the United States Courts. Judge Vanaskie attended Penn State University's Dickinson School of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor Degree, Cum Laude, in 1978. We are happy to announce that members of the Twitter Data Products and Trust & Safety teams will participate at AoIR 2016 and hold multiple office hours for AoIR members. Many members of the AoIR community work with Twitter data in a variety of scenarios, from fandom to political communication. The Twitter Data Office Hours will be an opportunity for scholars to directly discuss research possibilities with Twitter, in order to identify opportunities to more effectively use Twitter data for research purposes. Twitter is also eager to get feedback from researchers working in this space about how to improve academic access to Twitter data. The Twitter Data Office Hours will be held on site during the course of the conference. Starting today, you can contact twitterchat(a)aoir.org to book a half-hour slot. We suggest that you either prepare a brief proposal (~1 page) that outlines your project, or a set of questions that you would like to discuss. Please keep in mind that the aim of the office hours is to facilitate concrete research projects by making it easier for scholars already working in this space to get access to Twitter data and share their feedback about Twitter’s APIs and Data Products. CSCL 2017: Preliminary Call for Papers The 12th International Conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning June 18-21, 2017 Drexel University & The University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA Conference theme: Making a Difference — Prioritizing Equity and Access in CSCL Computer Supported Collaborative Learning is a premier conference of the International Society of the Learning Sciences that focuses on the study of social learning processes with and without technology as well as the development and evaluation of tools to enhance or improve collective thinking and learning. The conference is a major international event bringing together researchers with a wide variety of backgrounds and research interests including educational technology, design, HCI, information sciences, educational psychology, museum research, library science, curriculum and instruction, psychology, computer science, cognitive science, and many more. We welcome high quality conceptual, empirical, and theoretical contributions. This year's conference theme focuses on the need to consider issues such as equity, access, and inclusion in the design, implementation, and deployment of computer-supported learning environments. CSCL 2017 will prioritize keynote speakers, workshops and papers that champion research and tools focused on equity and access relative to CSCL. Hosted by a diverse leadership team in the Learning Sciences, the conference will highlight work that discusses ways to broaden the CSCL pipeline, promotes and/or celebrates out of the box thinking, or that brings a wide range of viewpoints or voices to CSCL topics or tools. Submissions We are currently seeking submissions for the following: • Full Papers (8 pages): Full papers are for mature work, requiring lengthy explanations of the conceptual background, methodology and data and analysis. Full paper submissions should state: (a) the major issue(s) addressed, (b) potential significance of the work, (c) the theoretical and methodological approach(es) pursued, (d) major findings, conclusions, implications, and (e) relevant scholarly references. • Short Papers (4 pages): Short papers are for work that makes significant contributions, but that is still in progress, of smaller scale, or that can be reported briefly. Otherwise, the same criteria apply as listed for full papers above. • Posters (2 pages): Posters are for work in early stages and for novel and promising ideas. The two page abstract should identify the aspect of the work that will likely lead to productive discussions with conference participants in a poster session, including figures exemplifying the visual support to be provided for these discussions in the poster. • Symposia (8 pages): Symposia are for conveying larger ideas or results about a specific issue. hi all, Forgive the cross-postings - I am recruiting for a post-doctoral fellow to work with me at Concordia University over the next two years in *Game Studies and Design.* Here's the position description and a link to more information. Also feel free to email me for more details: The Postdoctoral Fellow in Game Studies and Design will play a central role in launching two newly funded research projects that investigate game culture and game creation, and take as a central objective investigating new forms of play and new types of game mechanics. Streaming @ the Margins of Play studies live streaming of videogame play via Twitch.tv. It will investigate how the play practices of women, people of colour, older and LGBTQ individuals are reconfiguring our understanding of gameplay. This project investigates how such play is being (re)built as a site for entertainment, for leisure, and for community building. The research-creation project Playing with Ambiguity: A Game Exploring Moral Dilemmas and Player Agency investigates how better game design conventions can be developed to persuade individuals to explore morally ambiguous situations through play, to understand complex societal issues as well as individual actions that seem morally suspect. The PDF will work with Dr. Consalvo at the mLab and the Technoculture, Art and Games (TAG) Centre, which has 15 faculty members and 30 graduate students from departments across arts and science, fine arts and engineering. The Centre has the single largest concentration of work of this kind in Canada. TAG’s faculty and students have a commitment to developing collaborative projects and mentoring in an open concept studio/lab based environment. Academic qualifications required PhD in Communication Studies, English, Media Studies or a related field, with experience in qualitative methods. In addition to helping with the management of these projects, the PDF should have an independent research program that focuses either on research about live streaming of gameplay or a focus related to players, morality and ethics, and digital gameplay. Attendees will be invited to participate in three hands-on, interactive sessions organized around core research challenges in net history: (1) theory and epistemology, (2) materials, sources, and methodology, and (3) mediation and transmission. Submission process : Anyone can submit as a presenter (with abstract) or an attendee (no abstract necessary). Both will be involved actively, through sharing problems, tips and solutions. Rather than whole case studies or paper presentations, each session will address specific challenges facing one or more participants: theoretical paradoxes, methodological dead-ends, and demonstrations of born-digital artifacts. Through a series of activities, participants will be asked to take positions, brainstorm solutions, and identify common themes.
