Hi everyone! So, I'm looking at the calendar, and I want to share with you quick updates on our planning for AoIR 2016 and some important information. The Conference This year's conference theme is Internet Rules! Our diligent German local organizing committee of Dr. Christian Katzenbach, Larissa Wunderlich, and the folks at the Humboldt University Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) has been planning a first rate conference for us. The conference gets underway at Humboldt University with several workshops on Wednesday, 5 October, and our keynote address with Jose van Dijck launches the main conference in the evening of the 5th. The main conference is 6-8 October, with a soon-to-be announced plenary panel on 6 October. Be sure to check the AoIR website: http://aoir.org for information and updates in the News and Conference sections and details about the location and venue for the conference. The conference ends the evening of the 8th with a reception at a unique Berlin-esque venue with food, drinks, and a DJ. More announcements on that soon. As we've done in the last few years, this conference reception is part of the conference--no additional fees to attend--thanks to our sponsors (http://aoir.org/aoir2016/sponsors/) Dr. Cornelius Puschmann, the AoIR 2016 program chair, will be announcing the final schedule for the conference in early August. Registration But, here's the catch: *if you plan to come to AoIR and present your work, you need to register*. The early bird registration deadline is *August 1st* (you can register here: http://members.aoir.org/event-2243123) Anyone who has a paper, panel, or other submission type accepted but is not registered by that date will be removed from the final program. Speaking of registration, please help us replenish the travel scholarship fund. AoIR has worked hard to provide up to 6 travel awards, 5 $500 awards and one $1500 award, to people who are doing scholarship that is underrepresented at the conference or who could not attend the conference due to financial circumstances or are from non-OECD countries (see the call for applications if you're curious). This money generally goes to doctoral students or early career faculty who may not have the support to come to the conference otherwise. Unfortunately, the fund is depleting. We will not be able to keep providing such generous support without help from our members. When you register, if you can spare $10, there is a check box to give a personal contribution to the travel fund. Help us make the AoIR conference a global meeting of scholars. Hotels AoIR overlaps with a holiday in Germany, and Berlin is a popular vacation destination. If you haven't yet, get your hotel room booked. AoIR is not doing a room block at a hotel this year because there are so many hotel options in Berlin generally and especially in the area of the conference around Humboldt University. We welcome submissions from all topics in ageing populations research that are relevant to human-computer interaction, including but not limited to the following: - Understanding people: This topic is suitable for papers whose primary contribution is improved understanding of older people or interactional contexts, derived from quantitative or qualitative empirical research. Core contributions typically take the form of insightful findings, evolved theories, models, concepts, or methods, such as games improving well-being of older adults, TV gesture to improve TV watching experience etc. - Specific application areas: This topic will include papers that extend the design and understanding of applications for older adult user group. Example of application areas can be health, home, accessibility, gerontology, sustainability, ICT4D, data visualization, social computing and computer-supported collaborative work, and visual analytics. - Human factors: This topic will focus on papers on practice of designing products, systems, or processes to take proper account of the interaction between interactive systems and the old people who use them. - Input and Interactions: This topic focuses on new interaction techniques, technologies, and devices for input and output. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: sensing, actuation, unconventional UIs, touch and multi-touch, 3D interaction, augmented/mixed/virtual reality, mobile interaction, novel displays, and devices of different sizes and configurations. - Usability and user experience: This topic is suitable for works that extend the knowledge, practices, methods, components, and tools that make technology more useful, usable, and desirable. It expects significant works on the basis of their demonstrable potential for effective reuse and applicability across a range of application domains or across a range of design, research, and older user communities. Although we are interested in papers on the effects of various theories, technologies, software, or algorithms on ageing population interaction experience, technical contributions without clear indications of the impact on aged people are not within the scope of IxAP. SUBMISSION TYPES We encourage the following research submission types: PAPERS Full Papers are intended to report stable and completed research. Papers will be 4-10 pages and will undergo a peer review process. Submitted full papers should follow the ACM CHI paper. Accepted papers, after presented to the symposium, will be published in ACM Digital Library. The authors of selected oral presentations will be invited to a special issue of the International SCI- or EI- indexed Journal after further revision. Please note that there is no requirement to anonymize paper submissions and at least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the symposium. We have selected a program committee of experts in human-computer interaction and ageing people to lead the formal review process. Once your paper is submitted, it will undergo a double-blind peer review process. Each paper will be reviewed by three program committee members. If review scores fall below a threshold, the paper will be rejected. Authors of accepted paper will then be recommended to make certain changes before the camera-ready submission and acceptance might be tentative until those changes are included. POSTERS This is a juried submission track that allows attendees to showcase early, relatively speculative or not yet completed work so that others can know what they are doing. Authors are required to submit a 1-page poster paper including author information and a description of the study. Note that: 1. The poster size should be A0 (84.1 x 118.4cm, 33.11 x 46.61 inches). 2. A small desk can be provided on request. 3. There is no AC power supply for poster presenters. Please also note that there is no requirement to anonymize poster submissions and at least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the symposium. It starts with the conviction that after the great Bank Robbery of 2008, we can no longer only criticize financial capitalism but need to foster alternatives. On Thursday 1 and Friday 2 December, Moneylab#3 will bring together a cacophony of artistic and economic experimentations that offer strategies for the 99%. A two-day symposium of talks, workshops, performances and parties that tackle the assumption that there is anything too big to fail. Themes Universal Basic Income, Feminist Economics, Decentralized Democracy, Smart Contracts, DAOs, Networked Publishing, P2P Distribution, Digital Licenses, Music Revenue Models, Platform Cooperativism, Crowdfunding, Commons Transition. Background After Bitcoin forked, and remains in tatters, it is now blockchain technology that ignites visions of de-regulated and decentralized organization, while it is simultaneously being sanitized by commercial banks. Meanwhile the sharing and “service” economy lost its innocuous veneer and streaming services have failed and continue to fold the music industry. Despite the mutation of crowdfunding into crowd-equity and platform co-operatives, artists and designers continue to struggle to financially support themselves. All the while the financial mediators of the previous centuries continue to drag themselves onward into global debt. We are failing better, nonetheless. Workers’ unions are on the rise and numerous collectives are working together to collectively insure their own wellbeing and build alternative models of social governance. The aspirations of grassroots organizations such as Diem25, that promise to liberate social democracy from the stronghold of global finance, are gaining momentum across Europe. People’s parties such as Podemos and 15M even neared an electoral majority. This momentum has thrust radical economic alternatives into the central stage and some governments in Europe have begun experimenting with progressive policies such as a living working wage and a universal basic income. Moneylab#3 will assess the ambition of financial provocations that have ignited and dispersed from grass-roots movements to people’s political parties to establish a terrain of social and political reform, from de-centralized networks to state governments. The rift we find ourselves in stems much further than 'the banks.' Moneylab#3 will examine how financial retaliation has led to political reformation and asks whether the ambitious advancements in finance and governance can be considered attempts to fail better. Deadline for submissions: October 17, 2016 Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology's special issue on Ethical Risk Assessment in Biomedical Big Data GUEST EDITOR Brent Mittelstadt, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford INTRODUCTION In biomedical research, the analysis of large datasets (Big Data) has become a major driver of innovation and success. 'Biomedical Big Data' (BBD) describes the complex and new set of technologically-driven phenomena focusing on analysis of aggregated datasets to improve medical knowledge, public health, clinical care and commercial health and well-being devices and services. Machine learning and algorithmic categorisation can increasingly make sense of the seemingly endless data emerging from sensors, wearable devices, clinical observations, clinical trials, social and online platforms which provide insight into the behaviours and physiology of individuals. BBD is expected to provide new ways of understanding health and well-being at the level of the individual and society, for example by predicting behaviours, monitoring diseases and outbreaks, and providing risk stratification for individual patients. Epidemiology, infectious disease research, and genomics and genetics are already deeply affected. However, the collection, storage and analysis of BBD potentially raises serious ethical problems which may threaten the huge opportunities it offers. To avoid foreseeable problems and react quickly to emergent issues, the planning and deployment of BBD must include proactive ethical risk assessment. To contribute to this critical step, this special issue of Philosophy and Technology aims to map new, under-researched but important issues, concepts and cases that should be considered in proactive ethical assessment of emerging BBD platforms and services. TOPICS We request the submission of research articles addressing topics including: * Theories and concepts critical to the ethical assessment of biomedical Big Data in particular * Required modifications to informed consent in response to the scale and complexity of BBD * Alternatives to informed consent for BBD governance * Group-level protections, harms and benefits * Ethical principles for governance of BBD platforms * Applicability of traditional medical research ethics principles to BBD * Privacy, de-identification and research subject rights to data access * Ownership of intellectual property generated from BBD * Uses of BBD for empowerment or improvement of patient experiences * Implications of data-intensive clinical experiences for the doctor-patient relationship * Implications of the crossover between personal health devices and BBD research, e.g. Apple HealthKit * Impact of the European General Data Protection Regulation on both biomedical research and personal health/wellness services * Policy recommendations and requirements for poorly regulated BBD practices * Empirical studies/cases of existing Big Data practices that demonstrate critical ethical issues, concepts and solutions TIMETABLE * October 17, 2016: Deadline for paper submissions * December 16, 2016: Deadline reviews papers * January 31, 2017: Deadline revised papers * 2017: Publication of the special issue SUBMISSION DETAILS To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should go to the journal's Editorial Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/ The journal's submission guidelines and instructions for authors can be found here<http://www.springer.com/philosophy/epistemology+and+philosophy+of+science/j…>. Question on Research Response Rates

Hi all- My students and I are doing online survey research and are using three online groups (1 Facebook group, 1 LinkedIn group, and 1 listserv) as our survey population. Between them, these groups have thousands of members, but of course, many members aren't active. Thus, I believe that conventional response rate guidelines do not apply. Can anyone point me to some good resources on the issue of internet research today and response rates? (In the past, I have used snowball sampling, but that is not the case here.) Thank you.
