Apply *with a PhD project proposal* by August 26. ++Job description++ The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) of the Faculty of Humanities is looking for a PhD candidate to join the ERC-funded project 'Data Activism: The Politics of Big Data According to Civil Society' (DATACTIVE), with Dr. Stefania Milan as Principal Investigator. DATACTIVE investigates citizens’ engagement with massive data collection, seeking to understand how activism evolves in the time of datafication. As datafication progressively invades all spheres of contemporary society, citizens grow increasingly aware of the critical role of information as the new fabric of social life. This awareness gives rise to new sociotechnical practices taking a critical approach to ‘big data’ and massive data collection, which fall under the rubric of ‘data activism’. Data activism takes at least two forms: re-active data activism, whereby people increasingly resist the threats to civil rights that derive from corporate privacy intrusion and government surveillance (e.g., by means of technical fixes such as encryption); and pro-active data activism, whereby citizens take advantage of the possibilities for campaigning and social change that data availability provides (e.g., data-based advocacy). The DATACTIVE project explores how activism broadly defined evolves in the age of big data. We take a critical look at, among others, citizen empowerment through data; civil society’s privacy practices; surveillance and internet activism; governance of data flows and internet infrastructure; open data and civic tech networks. You will join an interdisciplinary team working under the leadership of Dr. Stefania Milan (the Principal Investigator; https://stefaniamilan.net) and collaboratively examining the emerging dynamics of data activism at the intersection of its social and technological dimensions. We offer a multidisciplinary, interactive and international research environment in a leading department (Communication and Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam currently ranks number 8 in the QS World Rankings). ++Requirements++ The ideal candidate should have: * a demonstrable affinity with one or the combination of the following areas of research: social movements/grassroots activism’s engagement with data, digital technology and citizen participation, datafication and digital citizenship, democratic agency and algorithmic power, social effects of algorithm discrimination, (participatory) governance of data flows; * a Master’s or equivalent degree in one of the following disciplines: sociology, political science, communication sciences, media studies, and neighboring disciplines, preferably with expertise in one of the following fields: social movement studies, digital sociology, sociology of knowledge and/or culture, international relations, governance studies, critical internet studies, critical data studies; * demonstrable expertise in qualitative/ethnographic and/or quantitative research methods; familiarity (or willingness to acquire it) with data processing techniques and digital methods. In addition, he or she should also possess: * a good knowledge of current developments in digital communication technology in the post-Snowden era, and the related socio-technical and policy processes; * a creative mind and an interest to think across disciplines and domains; * strong communication skills, and an interest in building bridges between research, policy and advocacy/activism; * excellent command of English. Familiarity with other languages constitutes an asset; * the ability to work independently as well as in a team, and be responsive to feedback; * the willingness to engage in research collaboration with nongovernmental organizations; * superior organizational skills, including the ability to plan one’s work and meet deadlines. Crypto Design Challenge for Deep Web Designers The Deep Web evokes images of an underworld that cannot bear the light of day. Yet this hidden realm contains an estimated 96% of all the content to be found circulating online. The first international Crypto Design Challenge shout out to artists, designers, researchers and visionaries to dive in and create new images of the Deep Web. Data leaks such as the Panama Papers and sensational press coverage on cybercriminals operating in a virtual legal vacuum maintain a dramatic image of online encrypted channels as a lawless cove, populated by bandits, predators and pirates. However, the Deep Web is so much more than an online black market, teeming with scandals and illegal activity. In fact, an estimated 96% of all the content online is not accessible through search engines, including encrypted databases, secret wikis and information that has not been indexed. This realm also empowered many citizens during the Arab Spring, providing encrypted communication channels to coordinate protest movements. Indeed, it harbors important communication tools for human rights NGOs, political dissidents, activists, and every other user who – for any reason whatsoever – wishes not to be tracked, stalked, and spied on. It is one of the remaining bastions of individual privacy, against corporate and governmental snooping and data mining, a place where anyone can remain anonymous. Three years after the Snowden revelations, it is safe to conclude that the focus on surveillance and individual privacy has not lead to a thriving debate on the infrastructure, imagination and accessibility to information on the web. Public outrage about privacy and data leaks has failed to spark the collective imagination. So You Want to Be a Deep Web Designer? The iceberg metaphor affects popular understanding of the Deep Web, as the inaccessible dangers of the murky “underwater” world. *REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR:* *Culture and politics of data visualisation: a one-day conference, 10th October 2016, University of Sheffield (*** please note change of date ***) *As data become more and more abundant, the main way that most people get access to them is through their visualisation. To date, much academic research about data visualisation has focused on individualistic and micro-level factors like memorability and speed of comprehension and has not attended to the social, cultural, political work that visualisations do, the contexts in which they circulate, and the mutually constitutive relationships between visualisations and their contexts. More recently, critical perspectives have begun to emerge, which point to the ways in which visualisations can privilege certain viewpoints, perpetuate existing power relations or create new ones, and play a role in the generation and modification of knowledge, cognition, perceptions of objectivity and opaque forms of governance and control. These critiques exist alongside the apparently contradictory belief that data visualisations are a way of ‘doing good with data’, making data transparent and accessible and so enabling greater inclusion in data-driven conversations and societies. This one-day conference addresses the culture and politics of data visualisation, brings critical thought into dialogue with the practice and potential of visualising data and considers how they might inform each other. In this way, it is neither a ‘show & tell’ nor a critique of datavis as ideologically implicated, but a space for productive exchange between critical thinking and datavis practice. The symposia have been notably successful in bringing together innovators and practitioners in precise mathematical methods for software and systems development, industrial users, as well as researchers. The industry track of FM 2016 welcomes short papers and extended abstracts describing industrial applications of formal methods, experience with introducing formal methods in industry, tool usage reports, experiments with challenge problems. Authors are encouraged to explain how the use of formal methods has overcome engineering and qualification problems, led to improvements in design or provided new insights. A survey of industrial applications of formal methods has been conducted and is continuously being extended (now with more than 100 entries). It would be welcome if submissions to the industrial track also would take the time to supply an entry to this survey (http://fm2016.cs.ucy.ac.cy/img/EntryTemplate.xlsx) We hope during the industry track of FM 2016 to provide a new status of this survey so you will be able to see how your findings compare to others. PAPER SUBMISSION Industry track papers should not exceed 6 pages (including appendices and references) for short papers. Accepted short papers will be published in the Symposium Proceedings, to appear in Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Extended abstracts of 2-4 pages are also welcome and will be added in a conference report. Submitted papers (written in English) should not have been published or submitted elsewhere concurrently for publication, shall not contain any proprietary information that might hamper publication (to be checked and confirmed by author prior to submission) and should be in Springer's LNCS format. All submissions will be evaluated by at least three members of the industry track program committee. A Science and Technology Studies (STS) Take on Doing Internet Governance 05 Oct 2016 | 9 am – 5.30 pm | HU Berlin, Dorotheenstr. 24, Berlin-Mitte This pre-conference Workshop is part of the AoIR conference. Over the last decade, the regulation and governance of the Internet at the national and international level have attracted growing attention by policy-makers and researchers. This is particularly the case in post-Snowden times which increased distrust of formal government institutions and their ‘dangerous liaisons’ with the private sector. Accordingly, observing and researching governing processes as they relate to the Internet is both timely and important. Traditionally, researchers and practitioners in Internet governance (IG) focused on new institutions established to discuss and negotiate the technical coordination of the Internet or related policies. Recently, authors have criticized this institutional focus, and perspectives from Science and Technology Studies (STS) suggest to rethink and substantiate questions of ordering and governing the net. In this view, the ‘doing’ of IG more broadly consists in practices and controversies of the design, regulation, and use of material infrastructures, as well as digital uses and practices. This preconference workshop seeks to nurture the growing interest in researching and observing IG from STS-informed perspectives. More broadly, the workshop aims to facilitate a discussion and an exchange of perspectives about the intertwined roles of design, infrastructures, and informal communities of practice in IG.
