Details are as follows: Track: Social Technical and Social Inclusion Issues Mini Track Title: Social Theory in Information Systems (STIR ’17) Description This year we are proud to celebrate the 21st consecutive year of the Social Theory in Information Systems Research minitrack. Since 1996, scholars and researchers have presented cutting edge research, using social theory in their work. STIR’17 solicits papers that use social theory in IS research drawing upon such approaches as sociotechnical theory, critical theory, social informatics, and organizational theory. We are interested in highlighting research that critically examines the constitution of ICT, and their roles in organizations and society. We are particularly interested in research that makes use of social theory to address the main theme of the conference, “A Tradition of Innovation,” meaning work that is innovative in terms of multi- and trans-disciplinary uses of social theory and methodologies to study the impacts of new and emerging technologies on people in their organizational and social lives. We are interested in questions about how we interact with ICTs in our work and social lives in ways that help and hinder the move towards more useful, productive, and happier lives. The goal of the workshops is to provide additional venues for discussing novel ideas as well as recent results of research in progress. In 2017 our goal is to have a balanced workshop program which comprises workshop formats of different types and a combination of emerging and established topics. Different full-day and half-day workshop formats are possible, for example: Novel interactive workshop formats with a correspondingly small number of participants. Such workshop formats might for example target at the exploration of a certain topic during the workshop through a moderated discussion or breakout sessions, resulting in a draft paper or report to be completed and published after the workshop. Particular priority will be given to these formats which require the active involvement of the participants. Traditional mini-conferences on specialized topics; such workshops typically have their own paper submission and review processes. Proposals for continuations of existing workshop series are welcome; a brief statement on the development of the workshop series, e.g., in terms of topics, number of paper submissions and participants or post-workshop publications over the years should be provided. Call for Participation: Symposium on Media, Communication, and Film Studies Programs at Liberal Arts Colleges, May 23-24, 2017 Deadline for submissions: February 10, 2017 Media, Communication, and Film Studies Programs at Liberal Arts Colleges (MCFLAC) invites proposals for papers, panels, and exhibits for a two-day symposium, to be held at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. The symposium will bring together faculty engaged in the scholarly and pedagogical praxis of media, communication, and film studies in the liberal arts context for two days of resource sharing, student-work showcases, workshops, and panel sessions. Building off the momentum of last year’s inaugural symposium, at Muhlenberg College, this year’s theme is “Revolutions.” We have chosen this theme in keeping with Colby College’s Center for the Arts and Humanities year-long focus, which is broadly conceived to encompass revolutions in the “political, literary, artistic, cultural, social, scientific, … conceptual,” and, we suggest, pedagogical and institutional realms. We invite proposals (250 to 500 words) that engage with our theme, including: * Revolutionary approaches to teaching * Teaching about revolutions--past and present * Revolutionizing the (increasingly neoliberal) institutional structures in which we are located * Mobilizing theory and pedagogy to facilitate revolutionary thinking * Analyzing the impact of ongoing revolutionary changes (sociocultural, economic, epistemological) upon our work in liberal education, including ideas for redirecting, capitalizing and/or adapting. * Interrogating the “revolutionary” rhetoric around higher education, with the liberal arts college said to be ripe for “disruption” * Responding to the Trump “revolution” and its reverberations on our campuses Preference will be given to submissions that fit the symposium theme, but we welcome submissions on all topics reflecting MCFLAC’s unique emphasis on praxis in liberal arts settings. We seek to bring together a diverse group of teachers, scholars, and students, from different backgrounds with various life experiences, teaching styles, and intellectual orientations. Research on the Web Presence of the Alt-Right in the US

Hi All: I am writing a book on the Alt-Right movement in the US. I am looking at many aspects of the movement including the size and nature of the audience for its websites. I’ve found that all Hard Core Alt-Right websites combined got on average about 3 million visits a month and grew by about 17.7 percent over the last six months. But an obvious question is: What percentage of those visits are by people who are truly committed to Alt-Right ideology, and what percentage are by people who are merely curious or even opposed to Alt-Rightism? I have access to web traffic data from the provider SimilarWeb and can find out for a given time period what websites were visited immediately before, during, and immediately after a visit to a particular “target” site. For example, regarding the Hard Core Alt-Right site amren.com, I know that: ►The site most often visited immediately before the visit to amren.com was conservative-headlines.com; ►The site visitors most often had open during their visit to amren.com was thepoliticalcesspool.com; ►The site most often visited immediately after a visit to amren.com was dailykenn.blogspot.com. My question is what, if anything, can I infer about the political sympathies of a visitor to an Alt-Right site based on knowledge such as the above about his web-surfing history? Suppose “a lot” (5 percent, 15 percent, 50 percent?) of visits to an Alt-Right site are made by curiosity seekers or people doing opposition research. Wouldn’t we then see that “a lot” of the sites visited before, during, and after the visit to the target site were not Alt-Right sites? Conversely, if the overwhelming majority of visits to an Alt-Right site are part of a pattern of visits to such sites, wouldn’t that imply most of the visits were made by Alt-Right sympathizers? Or maybe not? Have any of you out there dealt with problems similar to this one? Do you know of any literature on such issues? Thanks for any suggestions you can make. Cheers, Thomas J. Dear Colleagues, Organisation of The World Summit 2017 on mobileGovernment is moving forward with growing interest internationally. Speakers from the leading practices of mGovernment is building up and we are soliciting more speakers, panelists and tutorial presentations from mGovernment professionals of, especially, mobile industry, and also public and the third sector. At the Summit, key speakers from the public sector will be presenting the recent mobileGovernment achievements and challenges in their country.
