CFP HICSS Minitrack Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science (HICSS) January 4-7, 2017, Big Island, Hawaii, USA Kauai, Hawaii, USA http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/ Papers Due: June 15, 2016 This minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. Globalization has historically been tied to technological innovation, and the present era of a networked information society is no different. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided the infrastructure for multinational businesses, created new cultural connections irrespective of geographic boundaries and distances, and allowed an increasingly mobile global population to be connected to their friends, families, and cultures no matter where they are. The issues surrounding global, international, and cross cultural issues in Information Systems (IS) attracted much scholarly attention and have been explored under myriad contexts. In line with the track recognition that the Internet has transformed the way we work, learn, and play, our minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. The minitrack welcomes submissions that relate to all aspects of global IS, or IS research situated in a global, international or cross-cultural context. The minitrack is open to all methodological approaches and perspectives. We are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. *Integrated Security* Department of Political Science College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University The Department of Political Science at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Integrated Security. This faculty search is part of a cross-college cluster hire being conducted in the Integrated Security Destination Area (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html) which is one of several focused Virginia Tech initiatives to recruit and support world-class groups of faculty that bridge disciplinary strengths. This initial hire focuses on multiple aspects of today’s embedded cyber-physical/human systems. We seek a colleague who will build upon our departmental, college, and university strengths in the study of all dimensions of governance, privacy, and security at the interconnections of the digital and physical worlds as humans, groups, institutions, and systems link these domains of complex action. Over the next four years, the number of Internet-connected devices will more than double, changing the ways people interact with technologies and their environments; however, fundamental security and privacy challenges have yet to be adequately addressed for these new technologies. This cluster hire will foster cross-disciplinary collaborations that explore these challenges through the lenses of technology, law, governance, ethics, and business. We are interested in applicants who can demonstrate research and teaching expertise in one or more of the following domains of inquiry: human security and insecurity (broadly defined) in “the Internet of things”; the effects of these new developments on politics, governance, and security in organizations, states, or other entities; U.S. national, subnational, or transnational responses to network security threats; human governance of cyber-physical systems, property regimes, or regulatory organizations; security and governance questions related to immigration, refugee flows, cross-border movements, and displaced populations; security and class, gender, and/or race/ethnicity. Focusing on these governance issues and public policy responses in North America is the main emphasis but other cross-national perspectives are welcome. Applicants who approach these concerns from a theoretical and critical perspective are encouraged to apply. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester. This position will begin August 10, 2017. Required qualifications: Earned doctorate in political science or related field at the time of application or degree in hand by August 10, 2017. Successful applicants will demonstrate a strong interest in conducting research, teaching courses, and seeking grants and contracts in how the Internet of things affects concerns of human security/insecurity as they relate to governance of the public, private, and non-profit sectors as well the class, gender, locational, and racial dimensions of security in cyber-physical/human systems at any scale in U.S. national, subnational, and transnational contexts. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. A user's understanding of the information need and the overall task develops as he or she interacts with the system. Supporting the various stages of this task involves many aspects of the system, e.g. interface features, presentation of information, retrieving and ranking. The Supporting Complex Search Tasks workshop (SCST 2017) aims at creating and fostering an interdisciplinary forum where researchers can exchange ideas about alternative experiments and prototypes, and contribute to the development of a research agenda in supporting complex search tasks. ------------------ Topics of interest ------------------ We invite position papers addressing open research questions related to: * Context: What are the obvious use cases and applications of complex search? * Tasks: What are essential features of work tasks and search tasks to take into account? * Heterogeneous sources: With a multitude of information, varying from introductory to specialized, and from authoritative to speculative or opinionated, when to show what sources of information? * Search process: How does the information seeking process evolve and what are relevant differences between different stages? * UI/UX: What affordances are required and in what stage of the search process? How can we make the search process transparent to the user? How and when does the initiative shift between system and user? * Evaluation: How do we evaluate and compare approaches? Which measures should be taken into account? ------ Format ------ This is a workshop proper where discussion is central, and all attendees are active participants. We will start the workshop with a full round of introductions of all participants, making everyone feel welcome and part of the workshop. Then, the workshop continues with two short keynotes by keynote from academia to be confirmed and keynote from industry to be confirmed to set the stage and ensure all attendees are on the same page. Next, we will have presentations of contributed papers, with each paper getting a 1-minute boaster and a poster presentation in an interactive poster session. There will be 3-4 breakout groups seeded from the open research questions (see Goals) and the contributed papers, each group thoroughly prepared by a chair who guides the discussion, with examples from relevant IR evaluation campaigns such as the TREC Session and Tasks Tracks and the SBS Interactive and Suggestion Tracks, and from concrete examples of complex support systems with their UX and UI challenges. The breakout groups will report to the audience and a panel of experts, with continued discussion on what we learned, concrete plans for the next year, and a roadmap for the longer term. The discussion will continue during a social event, where the discussion will continue in a more informal way over food and drinks, deep into the Oslo night. The organizers have gained a proud reputation for their open and inclusive workshops, leading to new research collaborations, other workshops, and new evaluation tracks. The results will be disseminated in various ways: * A high quality, peer reviewed workshop proceedings, published in the CEUR workshop proceedings series (http://ceur-ws.org/) * A report on the results of the workshop in the ACM SIGIR Forum of June 2017. * Depending on the outcome, we will consider a special issue in an appropriate journal. * Last, but not least, the results can be fed into the running tracks at TREC, CLEF, and other evaluation campaigns. -------- Audience -------- The workshop will bring together a varied group of researchers—bridging CHI and IR in a natural way—with experience covering both user- and system-centered approaches, to work together on the problem and potential solutions, and identify the barriers to success and work on ways of addressing them. I am part of the organization team together with Prof. Gabriele Balbi and my colleague Paolo Bory from Univeristà della Svizzera italiana (USI). We hope you will join the event (free of charge) and to see in Lugano next December International Conference - Computer Networks Histories: Local, National and Transnational Perspectives 14-15 December 2017 Lugano, Switzerland Aims and scope Recently several works in the fields of Internet Studies, Science and Technology Studies, and Media Studies have stressed the importance of early local, national and transnational computer networks histories for a deeper understanding of technological and social change in contemporary societies. This two-day conference has a triple aim. First, gathering scholars and researchers from a variety of disciplines working on theoretical and empirical analysis of computer network histories. Second, providing a wide perspective on these histories, including case studies from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania as well as international organizations dealing with the control and management of networks: this interdisciplinary and international debate could be useful to compare worldwide experiences and to provide new frames on this topic. Third, the conference aims to develop new frameworks and a space of discussion on the historical role of computer networks, representing the starting point of an international community of scholars. Potential topics may include, but are in no way limited to, the following: - The origins and development of computer networks under a local, national, international, or transnational perspective; - Political, economic, and cultural representations of computer networks in Western and Eastern cultures; - Comparative analysis of early and late networks; - Physical infrastructures and materiality of computer networks; - The political economy of national digital infrastructures; - Histories of the digitalization of analogic networks; - The history of failed and forgotten computer networks projects; - The influence of early computer networks on the development of the Internet and of the World Wide Web; - The cultural and social history of computer networks communities (e.g. communitarian networks, academic networks, professional networks, civic networks).
