American Behavioral Scientist (ABS) Special Issue Call for Papers (CFPs) *Rethinking Digital Media and Citizenship:* *Conditions, Contexts, and Consequences* *Guest Editors: * Seungahn Nah (University of Kentucky) Masahiro Yamamoto (University at Albany, State University of New York) *Description: * A substantial body of scholarship has long tackled how traditional and newly emerging information and communication technologies (ICTs) foster an informed, efficacious, and engaged citizenry. Despite prolific literature on digital media and citizenship, theoretical approaches and conceptual and operational definitions still diverge in different disciplines and schools. What seems particularly missing in the literature is an examination of structural conditions and/or contexts that may facilitate or hinder the role of digital media in civic engagement. Therefore, the goal of this special issue is to call for theoretically and methodologically sound scholarship that examines causes, components, and civic consequences of digital media use. Such an examination presents important practical implications and policy applications. This special issue addresses the following major questions: 1) How can digital media use and civic engagement be conceptualized, operationalized, and theorized across various theoretical perspectives in the convergence and divergence of digital media environment? 2) To what extent do digital media (social and mobile), along with traditional media, influence civic engagement and how such an influence varies across communities of places, interests, practices, and beyond, as well as different ethnic groups and those who hold different socio-economic status? 3) How do social contexts and conditions promote or impede the role of digital media in civic, political, and community life at multiple levels? The special issue editors would welcome submissions addressing the following topics: 1) Theoretical advancement on digital media and civic engagement in offline and online communication environments; 2) Integrated theoretical framework concerning digital media and citizenship; 3) Innovative conceptual and operational definitions (measurements) of digital media across various platforms; 4) Social structural contexts and conditions (e.g., race, class, gender, family, school, organization, neighborhood, etc.) that affect digital media use and its effects on civic engagement; 5) Linkage between online and offline civic engagement from networked community perspectives. *Submission Guidelines: * Submitted manuscripts must be in MS Word (.doc) format with a title page that includes the title of the paper, full names, affiliations, email addresses, telephone numbers, complete addresses, and biographical sketches of all authors. Manuscripts must adhere to the APA (6th ed.) style and should contain between 6,000 and 8,000 words, including a 250-worlds abstract with 5-6 key words, all references, and notes. Manuscripts must contain original material which has not been previously published elsewhere or is not currently under consideration by another journal. All manuscripts should go through a blind, peer-reviewed process so no indicators of authorship should appear in the texts. Alice Visualizing (in) the New Media Neuchâtel, Switzerland - 08-10 November 2017 http://www.unine.ch/vinm2017 In November 2017, the Universities of Neuchâtel, Zurich and Bern in Switzerland will host the first international conference to focus specifically on visual communication in/about new media. In this regard, we invite the submission of abstracts for scholarly presentations in any of four overlapping thematic areas. 1. Social interaction Here, we envisage presentations that focus on the communicative uses of visual resources in the context of new media; for example: orthography and typography, graphematic design, the use of emojis (pictograms, emoticons, smilies), and/or the social-interactional uses of video, GIFs and non-moving images. 2. Meta-discourse Here, we envisage presentations that focus on people’s talk or writing about visual practices; for example: journalistic commentary about visual practices in new media (the use of emojis, for instance) or communicators’ discussions about their own or others’ visual practices in new media spaces. 3. Visual ideologies Here, we envisage presentations that focus on the visual depiction of new media in, for example, the context of commercial advertising, print or broadcast news, cinema and television narratives and/or public policy and educational settings. 4. Industrial design Here, we envisage presentations that focus on perspectives related to, for example, the visual-material design of technologies and apps, as well as the look or layout of screen interfaces, especially insofar as they concern the communicative (as opposed to technical) affordances of new media. In selecting presentations, the conference team will privilege those adopting a multimodal approach to visual communication; in other words, studies that focus on visuality but attend to its interaction with other communicative modes – especially linguistic ones. We take a broad and critical approach to labels like “new”, “digital” and “mobile” as they are applied to communication technologies; we are nonetheless principally interested in more current, social, interactive media spaces such as micro-blogging, messaging, forums, gaming, video- and photo-sharing, and social networking. The principal language of the conference will be English; however, the conference team welcome presentations and posters presented in German, French, and Italian (ideally, with slides or handouts offered in English). In such an interdisciplinary field, we also invite presenters to use their preferred style of delivery, whether it’s a read paper, an unscripted slideshow or some combination of the two. Titles, abstracts and basic biographical information should be submitted using our online submission system available here: https://www.conftool.net/vinm2017/ . Abstracts should be between 300 and 500 words and written in the same language as the presentation or poster. If the abstract is in a language other than English, please provide a list of five keywords in English. The conference is run in Europe but attracts researchers from all over the world. The 21st ADBIS conference will be held in Nicosia, Cyprus. The conference is accompanied by satellite events, including doctoral consortia and workshops. DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM The Doctoral Consortium (DC) is a forum where PhD students can present their research ideas, confront them with the scientific community, receive feedback from mentors, and tie cooperation bounds. Students will receive inspiration from their peers and will have a chance to discuss their research objectives with senior members of the community in the context of an established international conference. The DC session will take place on September 24, in parallel with the workshop sessions. Each participant will present her/his work, followed by a discussion with senior researchers. ELIGIBILITY We seek PhD students who have either determined the direction of their thesis research (probably with some preliminary results already published), but who still have substantial work to complete, or PhD student participants who are in the early stages of their dissertation year. It is not required to have a paper accepted for the main conference in order to participate in the DC. SUBMISSIONS To apply to the DC, please submit a single-authored paper (which will appear in the proceedings of DC), accompanied by a short email from the thesis advisor stating support for your participation in the DC, describing the current status of the thesis research, and giving your expected date of graduation. The papers for DC should be at most 12 pages in Springer format (formatting instructions can be obtained via http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… and describe the state of the whole PhD project, rather than a specific completed result. The paper should outline the objectives, the problem, state of the art, results obtained so far, and what is still to be done in the frame of the PhD project. If an author prefers to present a completed research result, the paper should be submitted to the main conference or one of accompanying workshops. A paper submitted to the DC may not be under review for any other conference or journal during the time it is being considered for the DC. The goal of the workshops is to provide additional venues for discussing novel ideas as well as recent results of research in progress. In 2017 our goal is to have a balanced workshop program which comprises workshop formats of different types and a combination of emerging and established topics. Different full-day and half-day workshop formats are possible, for example: Novel interactive workshop formats with a correspondingly small number of participants. Such workshop formats might for example target at the exploration of a certain topic during the workshop through a moderated discussion or breakout sessions, resulting in a draft paper or report to be completed and published after the workshop. Particular priority will be given to these formats which require the active involvement of the participants. Traditional mini-conferences on specialized topics; such workshops typically have their own paper submission and review processes. Proposals for continuations of existing workshop series are welcome; a brief statement on the development of the workshop series, e.g., in terms of topics, number of paper submissions and participants or post-workshop publications over the years should be provided. Mini-competitions or challenges around selected topics with individual or team participation are also highly welcome. We encourage you to contact us in advance with workshop ideas; we will work with prospective workshop organizers to help them design successful proposals. In particular for workshop proposals with novel interactive formats we are happy to assist you in further developing and implementing your ideas. We encourage both researchers and industry practitioners to submit proposals. These changes call for novel analytical tools and methodologies for making sense of large amounts of heterogeneous data, for deriving diverse kinds of knowledge, and for linking across different collections and research disciplines. Thus the theme of the 2017 conference is #TOScale #TOAnalyze #TODiscover. Digital libraries must improve outreach efforts, engage diverse communities, and provide scholars and users with effective and flexible access to materials which will in turn empower them to make new observations and discoveries. This year, we particularly invite papers, panels, workshops, and tutorials that present new discovery methods for diverse kinds of collections and datasets (e.g., documents, images, sounds, videos), that apply recent technologies in related fields like machine learning and data mining, and that report on innovative digital library applications that engage diverse communities, facilitate user access, and enable discovery and exploration in all domains including science, art, and the humanities. This year, in addition to the research-oriented program, we are organizing a practitioners’ day so experts and practitioners can share their experiences and report on major projects. Practitioner contributions will take the form of posters and demos. Participation is sought from all parts of the world and from the full range of established and emerging disciplines and professions including computer science, information science, web science, data science, digital humanities, librarianship, data management, archival science and practice, museum studies and practice, information technology, medicine, social sciences, education and the humanities. Representatives from academe, government, industry, and others are invited to participate. TOPICS JCDL welcomes submissions from researchers and practitioners interested in all aspects of digital libraries such as: collection discovery and development, hybrid physical/digital collections; knowledge discovery; applications of machine learning and AI; services; digital preservation; system design; scientific data management; infrastructure and service design; implementation; interface design; human-computer interaction; performance evaluation; user research; crowdsourcing and human computation; intellectual property; privacy; electronic publishing; document genres; multimedia; user communities; and associated theoretical topics. Submissions that resonate with JCDL 2017 theme are especially welcome, although we will give equal consideration to all topics in digital libraries. SUBMISSIONS Full papers report on mature work, or efforts that have reached an important milestone, and must not exceed 10 pages. Accepted full papers will typically be presented in 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Short papers may highlight preliminary results to bring them to the community’s attention. They may also present theories or systems that can be described concisely in the limited space. Short papers must not exceed 4 pages in the conference format. Accepted short papers will typically be presented in 10 minutes with 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Posters permit presentation of late-breaking results in an informal, interactive manner. Demonstrations showcase innovative digital library technologies and applications, allowing you to share your work directly with your colleagues in a high-visibility setting. Proposals for posters or demonstrations should consist of a title, extended abstract, and contact information for the authors, and should not exceed 2 pages in the conference format. Accepted posters and demonstrations will be displayed at the conference. Communities are considered to be a basic unit of social experience. For the 2017 round of C&T, we welcome contributions that particularly pay attention on technology that can be deployed for the common good. This raises a number of questions, issues, and implications that might not be relevant in other computing related conferences. The common good generally means finding peaceful ways to resolve conflict, securing a more equitable society, a healthy and diverse environment for ourselves and future generations, and cultural diversity. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can support community formation and development by facilitating communication and coordination among members, as well as enable and empower communities to deal with challenges and threats. We must also acknowledge the possibility that ICTs could be used in processes that degrade communities or community life; some ICTs could actually be antithetical to healthy communities. In this case certain developments should at the very least be questioned, if not actively discouraged. For this reason we also encourage critiques of existing systems, approaches, policies, and trajectories— any of the factors that encourage private gain at the expense of the common good. It’s not enough to assert that some particular technology will support the common good. Too often, in fact, the assumption is that a particular technological approach — if not the whole of ICT development — is steadfastly advancing towards a state of maximal support for the common good. What lines of argument can we develop that help support a case that a technological approach will support the common good — or wouldn’t? As researchers and academics we must entertain the possibility that our investigations may force us to revise some of our own approaches and assumptions, including rethinking who are the stakeholders of our work, and how our work should be evaluated. Modeling and designing the world we’d like to see can provide invaluable insights. Beyond conducting research and developing tools, services, policy, and the like, we aim to build the circumstances that help promote this work and the orientation in the world. What systems can help encourage civic intelligence and public problem solving? How do we recognize systems that discourage them? Are certain approaches to design, deployment, etc. more likely to result in systems that support the common good? And, if so, where have these been used—and with what degree of success. This focus acknowledges the reality that technological systems exist within social environments and frameworks, policy proposals, and educational approaches may be extremely relevant. Finally, how do we as a community identify our goals, gather our information, and report our findings as to help the communities upon whom we rely to use the information most effectively? Topics appropriate for submission to this conference are manifold. And they may emerge from a variety of relevant perspectives including philosophy, social sciences, design, art, the humanities, etc. Examples of some of the vibrant areas of communities and technology research include, but are not limited to: * Domains such as learning/education, health, cultural heritage; crises and natural disasters; environmental degradation and climate change; * Variety of communities and their relationships to technology; urban and rural, migrants, refugees, indigenous and first peoples, LGBTQ, low-income communities, measuring impacts on communities —positive, negative, and mixed * Bottom-up movements, grassroots developments, civic activism, community engagement, participatory publics, communities and innovation; * Crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, collective and civic intelligence, community learning, early warning systems, collective awareness, collaborative awareness platforms; social cognition; community emotion; happiness; historical memory; * Community owned and operated technology, DIY and maker communities (makerspaces, fablabs, crafters); community agriculture; * Online and offline communities, urban and rural communities; urban technologies; urban informatics; urban interaction design; cross-community work; new forms of communities; * Community memory, archives, and knowledge; resilience; smart communities in the context of smart cities; sustainable communities; economic and social development; * Civic problem-solving, communities in relation to urgent and complex challenges to the health of the planet and the people that inhabit it; collaborative systems; partnering with education; government, civil society, and movements; * Sharing economies; social media and social capital; associations, strong and weak ties, stakeholders; * Methodological issues including research, action, participatory approaches, community-centred design, infrastructuring and evaluation methodologies; ethnographic and case studies of communities; * Supporting community processes: sensemaking, online deliberation; argumentation and discussion-mapping; community ideation and idea management systems; collective decision-making; group memory; participatory sensory networks; * Technological issues: community toolkits; federated systems; integration with other systems, integration with face-to-face systems; * The future of communities and technology; simulations and utopian design; durable relationships and long-range goals; and * Developing and supporting the Communities & Technologies community; social and technological critique; effectiveness and other measures == Submitting a Paper Please submit all papers and abstracts using the ACM recommended templates. Papers will be submitted via EasyChair. In order to allow for a diversity of contributions, the conference will accept full and short research papers. * Full papers must be no longer than ten pages, including all additional material such as references, appendices, and figures. * Short (or Work-in-progress) papers must be no longer than four pages. The papers must include a title, sufficient space for the author name(s) to appear on the paper, abstract, keywords, body, and references. Papers submitted by the due date will undergo a double blind peer review process by the Program Committee and will be evaluated on the basis of their significance, innovation, academic rigour, and clarity of writing. With this category, we encourage C&T researchers or practitioners to present a case study or an experience report of real-world cases projects that provide new insights and learnings to other C&T researchers and practitioners. In general, both kinds of research are welcome – more analytical (such as ethnographical case studies and historical analysis of case) as well as more action-oriented (such as design case studies, action research reports). In addition, methodological reflections about case study research are appreciated. == What counts as a good case study research Case studies should be inspiring, but should not be constrained by traditional academic expectations. The primary criteria is relevance in making a significant contribution to the community. Successful case studies will meet the following criteria: they report on new work that derives in original insights, they have the potential for real impact on the C&T body of knowledge and practice, they report on very specific or singular communities or experiences. They shed light into emerging and/or marginalized topics and address existing gaps in the broader C&T methods and understanding. The Case Study submissions must be reported using the ACM recommended templates, should not exceed 5 pages, and can include supplementary material in the form of pictures, videos, documents, websites, etc. If supplementary materials are submitted, we request authors to include a list of the supplementary documents in their submission and a description of the nature and purpose of each item. Workshops provide a platform to discuss, explore and advance specific research areas of Communities & Technologies with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners. Each workshop should generate ideas that give the C&T community a new, innovative way of thinking about the topic, or ideas that suggest promising directions for future research.
