*CfP Different Bodies: (Self-)Representation, Disability and the Media* *University of Westminster, London, United Kingdom* *23 June 2017* This one-day conference seeks to explore representations of the body as strange, shameful, wrong, impaired, wounded, scarred, disabled, lacking, different or ‘other’ in contemporary media. The advent of digital media has underlined the importance of visual culture and our curiosity in representations of the body to form opinions about ourselves and others. Media portrayals of bodies can affect our lives because media are one of the primary agents of socialization (Moore and Kosut, 2010). Bodies we see in newspapers, on television and in our social media feeds are often made to appear perfect in order to conform to racialized and heteronormative ideals of what it means to be beautiful and normal in contemporary capitalist societies. Presentations of the body that are white, young, slim and productive have been critiqued from different fields in academia such as feminism, queer theory, disability studies, critical theory and postcolonial studies. The digital media landscape is posing new challenges to the study of body representation. The Internet and social media in particular have led to an increased representation and engagement with the body through practices such as selfies, webcamming, blogging, vlogging and so on. While digital media may contribute to an empowerment of excluded and silenced bodies, they may equally open up spaces of discrimination, threats, hatred, trolling and silencing online, as the #gamergate controversy or author Lizzie Velásquez’ self-presentation on social media have recently illustrated. A critical approach to representations of bodies and disability is therefore essential as a means of change (Bolt, 2014). This conference aims to develop a new understanding of disability and the media in the 21st century by establishing a dialogue between different scholars on the theme of body representations. In particular, we seek to formulate new questions to comprehend how the tension between non-digital and digital media is creating spaces for new ways of framing disabled bodies. How are new narratives being developed to recount diversity? What is their function? What is the relationship between representation of the body in news outlets and self-representation on social media? What are the epistemological opportunities the media could embrace in order to promote equality, health literacy and ultimately, a more comprehensive understanding of what it means to be human? We encourage interdisciplinary paper presentations of 15 minutes that aim to explore how narratives and images of other bodies are constructed in the media and what their aesthetic, social, cultural, epistemological and political implications are. Papers may draw on media and communication studies, as well as queer theory, disability studies, postcolonial studies, feminist theory, critical theory, psychoanalysis, psychosocial studies, literature, history, visual studies, anthropology, health communication, religious studies, medicine and philosophy. Possible themes include but are not limited to: - Researching bodies and the media: frameworks and methodologies - Journalism and practices of othering the body - The mediated body as spectacle - Celebrity bodies and the spectacles of transformation - The abject body - Stigma and the body - De-colonizing and de-westernising the mediated body - Neoliberalism, policy and austerity politics - (Dis)Empowerments of the disabled body - The objectification of the disabled body in the media - Contemporary coverage of disability in print/online/television/radio - Reality television and the body - Auto-ethnographic accounts of the body in / through digital media - The medicalised body in the media - Representing wounds and scars - Affective labour of bodies - The body and trauma This conference is part of the research project ‘Facial Disfigurement in the UK Media: From Print to Online’, led by Dr. Diana Garrisi (University of Westminster) and Dr. Jacob Johanssen (University of Westminster) that is financed through the University of Westminster Strategic Research Fund. CFP for Annals of the International Communication Association We are especially looking for in-depth literature reviews and essays dealing with theoretical development. ************* Aims and scope The Annals of the International Communication Association is a peer-reviewed quarterly journal publishing state-of-the-discipline literature reviews and essays, including: descriptive reviews; meta-analyses; and theoretical essays. ********** Submissions to the Annals are broadly defined as follows: Reviews – retrospective reviews, helping readers understand the development of current knowledge within the discipline over a defined period in the past, or prescriptive reviews, creating a roadmap for future direction of research on communication Communication Insights – examines a set of predetermined topics that provide a degree of continuity across the years and indicate how a specific research topic has developed. A set of predetermined topics will rotate over five year periods Book Reviews – reviewing a set of recently published books that focus on a central theme within the discipline. The goal of the Annals book reviews is to provide a critical review and synthesis of published books. The Editor encourages authors from non-English language speaking countries to consider submitting topical reviews of books not available in the English language in order to increase the reach of communication studies research globally. Members of this list might be interested in the following event: Social Justice in an Age of Datafication — Launching the Data Justice Lab — Friday 17 March 4pm — Cardiff University, UK The Data Justice Lab<https://datajusticelab.org/> will officially launch on Friday, 17 March 2017. Join us for the launch event at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC) at 4pm. Our financial transactions, communications, movements, relationships, and interactions with government and corporations all increasingly generate data that are used to profile and sort groups and individuals. These processes can affect both individuals as well as entire communities that may be denied services and access to opportunities, or wrongfully targeted and exploited. In short, they impact on our ability to participate in society. The emergence of this data paradigm therefore introduces a particular set of power dynamics requiring investigation and critique. The Data Justice Lab is a new space for research and collaboration at Cardiff University that has been established to examine the relationship between datafication and social justice. With this launch event, we ask: What does social justice mean in age of datafication? How are data-driven processes impacting on certain communities? In what way does big data change our understanding of governance and politics? And what can we do about it? We invite you to come and participate in this important discussion. We will be joined by the following keynote speakers: Virginia Eubanks (New America), Malavika Jayaram (Digital Asia Hub), and Steven Renderos (Center for Media Justice). Virginia Eubanks is the author of Digital Dead End: Fighting for Social Justice in the Information Age (MIT Press, 2011) and co-editor, with Alethia Jones, of Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around: Forty Years of Movement Building with Barbara Smith (SUNY Press, 2014). She is also the cofounder of Our Knowledge, Our Power (OKOP), a grassroots economic justice and welfare rights organization. Professor Eubanks is currently working on her third book, Digital Poorhouse, for St. Martin’s Press. In it, she examines how new data-driven systems regulate and discipline the poor in the United States. She is a Fellow at New America, a Washington, D.C. think tank and the recipient of a three-year research grant from the Digital Trust Foundation (with Seeta Peña Gangadharan and Joseph Turow) to explore the meaning of digital privacy and data justice in marginalized communities. Malavika Jayaram is the Executive Director of the Digital Asia Hub in Hong Kong. Previously she was a Fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, where she focused on privacy, identity, biometrics and data ethics. She worked at law firms in India and the UK, and she was voted one of India’s leading lawyers. She is Adjunct Faculty at Northwestern University and a Fellow with the Centre for Internet & Society, India, and she is on the Advisory Board of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC). Steven Renderos is Organizing Director at the Center for Media Justice. With over 10 years of organizing experience Steven has been involved in campaigns to lower the cost of prison phone calls, preserving the Open Internet, and expanding community owned radio stations. Steven previously served as Project Coordinator of the Minnesotano Media Empowerment Project, an initiative focused on improving the quality and quantity of media coverage and representation of Latinos in Minnesota. He currently serves on the boards of Organizing Apprenticeship Project and La Asamblea de Derechos Civiles. Steven (aka DJ Ren) also hosts a show called Radio Pocho at a community radio station and spins at venues in NYC. The event will be followed by a reception. CALL FOR PAPERS (apologies for multiple copies) *3rd IEEE International Workshop on Internet of Things for Active and Assisted Living (IoTAAL)* In conjunction with IEEE Global IoT Summit 2017, Geneva, Switzerland - 6-9 June 2017. http://www.tlc.dii.univpm.it/iotaalms/iotaal2017/ *MOTIVATION AND SCOPE * Increased life expectancy and decreased birth rates are challenging developed countries worldwide, with a rapidly growing elderly population, and a declining workforce. These two contextual phenomena are generating new needs, as ageing increases the probability of developing physical and cognitive impairments, requiring new and more effective ways to provide support and care. According to the United Nations, the elderly, defined as people over the age of 60, will make up 37% of the European population by 2050, from 20% in 2000: this will put a dramatic pressure on public welfare systems, and new ways of assistance and care delivery have to be designed. The Internet of Things may provide significant enhancement to the quality of life for the elderly and, in general, people in need, bringing new algorithms, architectures and platforms into Active and Assisted Living (AAL), to develop new and innovative approaches. A peculiar aspect of IoT relies in enabling the collection of massive amounts of data, generated from physical and virtual sensors, things, smart objects and users. As such, IoT is totally functional to AAL, with the pervasive collection of environmental and personal data related to the monitored subject, and their processing, aimed at generating information to be used in different types of applications, from behavioral analysis, to gesture and action recognition, to fall prevention and detection, to human-machine interaction, just to mention a few. *TOPICS OF INTEREST* This workshop aims at investigating the close relationship between IoT and AAL, in a data-oriented perspective, and at different layers: from the technologies enabling sensor data collection, to the communication architectures needed to support data transfer, to the reasoning techniques applied to data, in order to generate the information upon which AAL services and functionalities are built. We invite submissions for the half-day workshop ‘Locating the Child in Digital Games Research’, to be held as part of the DiGRA 2017 Conference in Melbourne, on morning of July 3rd, 2017. (apologies for cross-posting) The vast majority of children, including the very young, engage in some kind of digitally mediated play on a regular basis. Of course, ‘play’ and ‘childhood’ are deeply entwined concepts with play deemed necessary and natural for children in contemporary western societies. However, ‘child’s play’ remains marginal in game studies literature. The overarching aims of this workshop are: • To bring together researchers in games studies whose work includes a focus on children’s digital play. • To establish an interdisciplinary dialogue with scholars from a range of fields. We welcome submissions for participation that describe completed, in progress, or planned research. Relevant theoretical or ‘talking points’ proposals will also be considered.
