Concordia University’s Department of Communication Studies invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in *Data and Networked Publics*. We seek a scholar who unites critical and cultural theory with computational methods in the study of networked publics. In particular, we seek a scholar able to analyze the connections, rhythms and rhetorics embedded in the data, devices and algorithms that form networked publics. The ideal candidate will not only theorize but also analyze the production and accumulation of the vast data sets resulting from our actions on digital networks and their transformations of the nature and study of public life. Subject to budgetary approval, the position will begin August 1, 2017 and will normally be made at the Assistant Professor level; however, appointments at a higher rank may be considered. Candidates will have a PhD in communication studies, film or media studies, new media studies, cultural studies, science and technology studies, or a related discipline. We welcome scholars who apply their expertise toward critical and feminist praxis, connective action and social justice. The candidate will be expected to teach in all four programs (BA, Diploma, MA and PhD), to supervise undergraduate and graduate students, to engage in ongoing research and/or research-creation activities, and to contribute through service to the life and reputation of the Department, the University and the wider community. The candidate must be able to teach quantitative methods, particularly how to theorize, design and analyze the large data sets produced by the rhythms and networks of public life, including social media data. Normal teaching load is 12 credits (e.g., 2 courses per semester). The Department’s faculty is at the forefront of the theorization and production of a wide range of media and our renowned undergraduate programs offer courses in sound, video, and intermedia underpinned by critical frameworks including cultural studies, media studies, cinema studies, environmental studies, game studies, mobility studies, and the politics of identity. Founded in 1965, the Department of Communication Studies at Concordia University is Canada’s oldest degree-granting department in the discipline. SpringHill Suites Downtown Denver Metropolitan State University of Denver Denver, Colorado USA June 23-24, 2017 Call for Papers: In the current political climate, the constructions of celebrity leaders and popular forms of mediated truths, especially with the recent "fake" internet news, have raised questions about journalism. Tabloid and other forms of popular journalism use narrative devices of gossip, rumor and scandals while many news media have abandoned facts and intelligent analysis in favor of spectacular outrage and incivility, both situations acting as testaments to the lack of informed opinions. Although scholars and journalists work together during news reporting, investigations/documentaries, and on other issues that are covered by news media, scholars are often confined to academic research and disconnected from the realities faced by journalists. Can citizen journalists and journalism scholars help move forward with progressive research and practice? What are the qualifications and definitions of a `journalist?' Is this someone who is employed professionally - or someone who has received an academic certification (degree) to be qualified? Or can anyone today be a journalist? Citizen participation has been seen as essential in the democratic processes of production, distribution, and reception of news. Online participatory media such as blogs, comments and videos offer a democratic platform for the expression of alternative ideas that may otherwise be filtered by traditional journalism. Yet, citizen journalists need critical media literacy that is often lost in the lure of visibility. How can journalism scholars creatively and critically engage citizen journalists in the dissemination of their research, informed opinions and cultural productions? Key Speakers Josh Nathan graduated from Northwestern University, Magna cum Laude, in Journalism before spending 10 years working on-air as a television reporter and a National Weather Association certified meteorologist. His final position in TV was with the NBC affiliate in Hawaii, where he was also finishing his graduate degree. A professor with The Art Institutes in Critical Thinking and Communication, he began teaching for the University of Colorado Denver last year. He serves as an Academic Critic for the Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies (CMCS) and is co-chair of its NYC 2017 conference. Quoted on a variety of subjects in international forums with several journal publications to his credit, Nathan wrote his first book about the ways in which news changes the collective memory of events, altering historical narratives. His second book, Too Mad to Trust (2015), was a departure aimed at curbing rising communicative disorders in children, and he is currently completing his PhD in Education and Human Resource Studies at Colorado State University. William Huddy earned his Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Denver (2012). Prior to academia, Huddy worked as a journalist and anchored television newscasts in Colorado Springs, Colorado, El Paso, Texas, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Fort Myers, Florida. He's a Past-President (2007) of the Rocky Mountain Communication Association, and an active member of the National Communication Association since 2001. He teaches Political and Campaign Communication, Communication Research and Theory Building, Interpersonal Communication and Public Speaking at Metropolitan State University of Denver (since 2013), with a research focus on student engagement and communication activism. This form of digital activism has at times been disdainfully called slacktivism for its low barriers to entry, high affect, and low ability to lead to social change. The goal of this panel is to bring together examples of the ways in which everyday forms of digital activism are viable forms of political action that have an impact even beyond the confines of the digital realm. There is an obvious need more scholarship in order to discern what works, what doesn't, and why. The broad aim of this position is to better understand how privacy and data use are perceived by social media users in relation to their own data being collected by third parties such as governments, journalists, and marketers. This year’s Association of Internet Research annual conference theme is “Networked Publics”, the conference will be held at the University of Tartu, Estonia this year from 18-21 October 2017. Christian and Koen. **** Digital migration studies: theoretical innovations and methodological considerations? This panel explores how contemporary migrants engage with networked publics evolving on digital platforms. The global availability of digital media content helps shape multiple and partially overlapping publics reaching specific transnational audiences. Despite the rising popularity of digital communication across the globe, the role of networked publics in the quotidian experiences of migrants has not been comprehensively analyzed. Facing stereotypes, anti-immigration sentiment and discrimination in local settings across Europe, the US, Australia and elsewhere, numerous members of diaspora communities, expatriates, and refugees increasingly make use of online platforms to find their voices and forge transnational ties. Digital media bolster transnational migration networks, digital diasporas and they transform family life, and enable connected migrants. Simultaneously, social media platforms are also replete with discriminatory fake-news and hateful trending topics targeting specific migrant groups. The rapid progress of digital platforms involves considerable epistemological challenges and prompts a need for new forms of internet research, including digital ethnography and digital data-driven methods. By bringing together internet researchers from various disciplinary backgrounds, we seek to gain a better understanding of the complex interrelations between corporal travel and digital mobilities. To stimulate interdisciplinary debates, we welcome ethnographic and digital data-driven investigations into digital media enhancing mobilities as much as theoretical interventions and methodological innovations in the emerging research area of digital migration studies. Submissions can deal with one of the following questions: -In what ways do digital media reinforce encapsulating and cosmopolitan discourses? -How do experiences of connected migrants differ across geographies and gendered/classed/racialized situations (internal migration, transnational migration, forced migration, voluntary migration, elite migration, expatriates)? -What self-presentations do migrants choose across digital platforms? -How is solidarity with migrants and refugees digitally mediated across social media? -How does the digital circulation of fake-news, trolling, discrimination, hate and violence affect migrants? -How does big data and datafication (i.e. surveillance and border control) change the experience of migration? -How can mixed-method approaches be designed to examine networked publics of migrants? -How can data-driven approaches be mobilized for a social justice oriented digital migration studies? Organizers: Christian Ritter Christian Ritter is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Social Anthropology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology. His latest research project Assembling places of expertise: communicative practices of energy consultants in Northern Europe examines the role of digital platforms in the circulation of energy knowledge and expertise. In 2013, Christian completed his PhD at Ulster University, UK. Prior to his appointment as postdoctoral fellow at NTNU, Christian worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Istanbul Studies Center, Kadir Has University, and was awarded a scholarship for international researchers by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (Tübitak). His research interests include digital media, corporate cultures, contemporary mobilities, sustainability, cultures of expertise and urban development (www.ntnu.edu/employees/christian.ritter) Koen Leurs Koen Leurs is Assistant Professor in Gender and Postcolonial studies at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Lerus is a feminist internet researcher interested in multiculturalism, race, migration, diaspora and youth culture using mixed methods and ethnography. Leurs has published Digital Passages. Migrant Youth 2.0. Diaspora, Gender & Youth Cultural Intersections (Amsterdam University Press), Everyday Feminist Research Praxis (Cambridge Scholars Press).
