Hello AoIR listservers, I'm working on a paper that talks about police violence against black men and women in the U.S. and the emergence of radical protests within the context of the U.S. Civil Sphere. An important part of this was the creation of BlackLivesMatter as a collective representation and mobilizing mechanisms, but also its reactionary groups of AllLivesMatter and BlueLivesMatter. The conference is run in Europe but attracts researchers from all over the world. The 21st ADBIS conference will be held in Nicosia, Cyprus. The conference is accompanied by satellite events, including doctoral consortia and workshops. DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM The Doctoral Consortium (DC) is a forum where PhD students can present their research ideas, confront them with the scientific community, receive feedback from mentors, and tie cooperation bounds. Students will receive inspiration from their peers and will have a chance to discuss their research objectives with senior members of the community in the context of an established international conference. The DC session will take place on September 24, in parallel with the workshop sessions. Each participant will present her/his work, followed by a discussion with senior researchers. ELIGIBILITY We seek PhD students who have either determined the direction of their thesis research (probably with some preliminary results already published), but who still have substantial work to complete, or PhD student participants who are in the early stages of their dissertation year. It is not required to have a paper accepted for the main conference in order to participate in the DC. SUBMISSIONS To apply to the DC, please submit a single-authored paper (which will appear in the proceedings of DC), accompanied by a short email from the thesis advisor stating support for your participation in the DC, describing the current status of the thesis research, and giving your expected date of graduation. The papers for DC should be at most 12 pages in Springer format (formatting instructions can be obtained via http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… and describe the state of the whole PhD project, rather than a specific completed result. The paper should outline the objectives, the problem, state of the art, results obtained so far, and what is still to be done in the frame of the PhD project. If an author prefers to present a completed research result, the paper should be submitted to the main conference or one of accompanying workshops. A paper submitted to the DC may not be under review for any other conference or journal during the time it is being considered for the DC. Many different kinds of political actors use a wide range of computational systems, social media platforms, and big data analytics to understand and manipulate public opinion. The political use of algorithms over platforms like Twitter and Facebook has received much journalistic attention, but it can be difficult to relate the dissemination of content over social networks to changes in public opinion or voter preference. The firms behind these platforms, however, increasingly acknowledge that politically motivated algorithms and automation can have deleterious outcomes for public life. How does big data get used for political purposes? Can the behavioural impact of politically-motivated big data manipulation be measured? How does the structure, function or affordances of computational propaganda vary across platforms, issue areas, or country cases? This Big Data special issue on Computational Propaganda and Political Big Data, scheduled for publication in December 2017, aims to advance our understanding of how the Internet can be used to spread propaganda, engage with citizens, and influence political outcomes. We welcome submissions that utilize big data or engage with methodological, theoretical, practical, and ethical issues associated with politicized use of big data. The special issue seeks to describe and discuss: - the effects of computational propaganda, automated social actors and bots on Internet platforms, Internet users and political processes. - measurement of the distribution and impact of fake news; - linking, sharing, and citation structures across large numbers of voters or supporters; - the political economy of big data mining; - the political inferences that can be made by reverse engineering de-personalized data, analysing relational data, or assembling shadow profiles on people not represented in political data; - the path from exposure to computational propaganda to behavioural change; - the use of the drones, smart city sensor networks, the Internet of Things or proprietary device networks for gathering politically valuable big data. The editors also seek research on the computationally creative ways of mitigating the impact of computational propaganda: alert systems for identifying algorithmically-based political manipulation or high levels of automation over device networks and social media platforms; big data driven systems for source verification or fact checking that might raise trust in computing; ways of detecting the origins of manipulative content on massive social network platforms. Dear Colleagues We're organising a workshop at King's College London next month to explore interactions between Modern Languages research and digital culture, as part of the 'Language Acts & Worldmaking' project, funded by the AHRC as part of the OWRI initiative. Registration is free, and we hope some of you can join us - please find further information below: ------------------------------- Mapping Multilingualism and Digital Culture (workshop) King's College London 22 June 2017, 10 am to 5.30 pm Modern Languages research increasingly happens in a context which is influenced by digital culture, and although this is often forgotten or ignored, global digital culture is profoundly multilingual. But what do we really understand about interactions (and tensions) between the two? How is Modern Languages research transformed by digital culture, and how can a multilingual perspective help us to engage with the 'Digital' more effectively? This workshop aims to critically examine the current state of Modern Languages research which is somehow digitally mediated - whether that be in its creation (editing), methods (virtual ethnography; social and cultural analytics; distant reading), transmission (as code), dissemination (digital publishing; visualisation), object of study (as 'data'), infrastructure (digital archives; ecosystems), mobility/mutability or its social dimension (crowdsourcing; social media). It explores how the study of other cultures, their languages, literature, art and history are altered as a result, and what this means for researching (and learning) Modern Languages. The workshop will bring together a range of academics, digital practitioners and cultural sector respondents in order to study the challenges and opportunities in merging digital and non-digital methods into an approach which integrates critical thinking, humanities-based interpretative skills, creativity and digitally mediated knowledge production. The workshop sets out to explore the following questions: * How does digital culture alter the way that Modern Languages research is carried out? * How have research questions relating to Modern Languages been articulated (and answered) using digital technology? * How have scholars and practitioners studying 'the digital' approached and interpreted Modern Languages research? What tools and methodologies have they employed, and what opportunities are there for broader application? * To what extent have networked communication, open culture, collective intelligence and participatory architectures influenced the execution and transmission of Modern Languages research and what are the opportunities/barriers? * What new research methods or research objects are created as a result? And what implications does this have for teaching/learning? The workshop will start with a keynote speech from Professor Claire Taylor (University of Liverpool), and includes panel discussions, group activities and presentations on a number of topics from digital researchers & practitioners with an interest in Modern Languages. This is the first in a series of events organised by the 'Digital Mediations' strand on the Language Acts project http://languageacts.org/ and funded by the AHRC as part of its OWRI initiative. The strand surveys digital data, tools and methodologies commonly used in Modern Languages research (with a particular, but not exclusive, focus on Spanish and Portuguese-language research) and explores the potential and limitations of digital culture in a language-based research ecosystem. There will also be opportunities to engage (digitally) with the questions raised by the workshop before, during, and after the event: we will be opening up debate online and asking people to nominate their favourite digital tools, projects and publications involving Modern Languages research. The appointee will teach, research and lead the development of English-language journalism programmes. She or he will also be expected to contribute to one or more of the following strategic development areas in English: publishing studies, digital cultures, non-fiction writing. Applicants should be able to demonstrate journalistic experience and familiarity with the journalism profession, and the capacity to apply these in an academic setting. Journalism at NUI Galway Journalism studies is located within the discipline of English in the School of Humanities. We currently run an MA in Journalism and BA Connect with Journalism, as well as offering option modules in journalism and media studies within the English undergraduate curriculum. The University now seeks to develop its journalism programmes to meet the new demands and trends in the journalistic and media professions. The post-holder will be expected to take a leadership role in this development. The post-holder will be a member of the discipline of English. English is the largest discipline in the School of Humanities, with around 1200 undergraduates, 60 MA students and 30 PhD students. We teach a broad undergraduate curriculum, touching on all major historical periods and genres, and we run six taught MA programmes: MA in English; MA in Literature and Publishing, MA in Culture and Colonialism; MA in Writing; MA in Journalism, MA in Digital Cultures. Our staff also contribute to the Blended Learning BA programme and to programmes in Theatre Studies and Creative Writing. Thank you *** Post-Graduate Conference Digital Communities: interdisciplinary perspective Monday 3rd July 2017 Call for abstracts We look forward to welcoming you to our first Postgraduate Interdisciplinary Conference! “Digital Communities: interdisciplinary perspectives” postgraduate conference is organised by PhD students from the schools of Social Science, Computer Science, Law and Politics in Cardiff University and supported by the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). It will take place on Monday the 3rd of July 2017 at the Glamorgan Building, Cardiff and will bring together PhD students and academics from different disciplines interested in studying the implications of the digital on society. This interdisciplinary conference is aimed at attracting PhD students from Wales, the UK and overseas from across different disciplines. The principal aim of “Digital Communities” is to encourage doctoral researchers to consider how the concept of digital communities is applied inside and outside of their own subject areas. Overview How are digital technologies impacting upon, and affecting the lives and relationships of people and things? How are communities developed and maintained in these contexts? How are they, and how could they be, governed and threatened? How can they be researched? Through this conference we will provide a space for discussion around emerging and pertinent issues faced by people and communities in their interactions with the digital, as well as the opportunities and barriers that face researchers studying the digital. Students at all levels of postgraduate study, as well as early career researchers, are invited to give presentations on their own research (ongoing or completed) as well as various aspects of their study and experience, including but not limited to: complete and preliminary findings, insights and observations, theoretical/methodological/ethical issues and approaches, problems and challenges, personal/professional interests and experiences related to the digital, and so on. Given this open and inclusive scope, we especially welcome contributions that have relevance across different academic and professional disciplines. Keynote Speakers Presentation groups will be bookended by two academic keynote speakers: Dr Athina Karatzogianni, Associate Professor in Media and Communication at the University of Leicester: “The Problem of Trading Discursive for Affective Power in Digital Political Communities”. Data Ethics Decision Aid

Dear list, the issue of ethics and data has addressed a few times on this list. On that note I would like to share our recently published Data Ethics Decision Aid (DEDA). Commissioned by the City of Utrecht (NL) and developed in close cooperation with their data analysts and project managers, the Utrecht Data School developed a process and tools to trace ethical issues in (municipal) data projects. DEDA's lead developer Aline Franzke, who holds an MA in Applied Ethics, also serves on AoIR's ethics committee. DEDA is mainly a large table poster (A0) which is used to structurally inquire the process of a data project and its various implications for values, social impact, ownership, accountability etc. DEDA also provides a manual and an online questionnaire to guide and document ethical decision making. The IGF Sri Lanka reinforces active citizenship in people and participates in the development of intercultural and intergenerational dialogues. The 2017 theme is "*Cyber Security & Safer Internet*". The IGF Sri Lanka is hosted by *ISOC Sri Lanka <http://isoc.lk/language/en/>* and the *Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure <http://www.mtdi.gov.lk/>* with support from the *Internet Society <http://isoc.org> *and the *IGFSA <http://igfsa.org>* and other stakeholders. The event was extended to 3 days this year to include an *Accessibilty Forum*, a *Women IGF*, a *Youth IGF*, as well as workshops in *Internet Governance*.
